The avionics hardware industry world-wide is now commonly required to follow DO-254 Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware for literally all phases of development: Safety, Requirements, Design, Logic Implementation, V&V, Quality Assurance, etc. The DO-254 standard is a companion to the software DO-178B standard; however, there are many differences between hardware and software which must be understood. This basic course introduces the intent of the DO-254 standard for commercial avionics hardware development.
The Fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing 2018 Using Critical Thinking Skills by Alex Krulikowski reflects the technical content found in the latest release of the ASME Y14.5-2018 Standard. This book includes several key features that aid in the understanding of geometric tolerancing. Each of the textbook's 26 chapters focuses on a major topic that must be mastered to be fluent in the fundamentals of GD&T. Each topic includes a goal that is defined and supported by a set of performance objectives that include real-world examples, verification principles and methods, and chapter summaries. There are more than 260 performance objectives that describe specific, observable, measurable actions that the student must accomplish to demonstrate mastery of each goal. Learning is reinforced by completing three types of exercise problems, along with critical thinking questions that promote application of GD&T on the job.
Additive manufacturing (AM) is currently being used to produce many certified aerospace components. However, significant advantages of AM are not exploited due to unresolved issues associated with process control, feedstock materials, surface finish, inspection, and cost. Components subject to fatigue must undergo surface finish improvements to enable inspection. This adds cost and limits the use of topology optimization. Continued development of process models is also required to enable optimization and understand the potential for defects in thin walled and slender sections. Costs are high for powder-fed processes due to material costs, machine costs, and low deposition rates. Cost for wire-fed processes are high due to the extensive post-process machining required. In addition, these processes are limited to low-complexity features.

Currently, each of these delegating organizations manages and conducts a unique training program for individuals responsible for their product release overcheck process. For suppliers producing products for multiple delegating organizations, each must then manage the multiple training requirements.
