Recent Development in Friction Stir Welding Process: A Review

Abstract The Friction stir welding (FSW) is recently presented so to join different materials without the melting process as a solid-state joining technique. A widely application for the FSW process is recently developed in automotive industries. To create the welded components by using the FSW, the plunged probe and shoulder as welding tools are used. The Finite Element Method (FEM) can be used so to simulate and analyze material flow during the FSW process. As a result, thermal and mechanical stresses on the workpiece and welding tool can be analyzed and decreased. Effects of the welding process parameters such as tool rotational speed, welding speed, tool tilt angle, depth of the welding tool, and tool shoulder diameter can be analyzed and optimized so to increase the efficiency of the production process. Material characteristics of welded parts such as hardness or grain size can be analyzed so to increase the quality of part production.

This document is not a standard, it is a candidate for a standard being submitted to SAE for their consideration as a comment to SAE J2735. The term SAE J2735 SE candidate is used within this document to refer to this submission. This document specifies dialogs, messages, and the data frames and data elements that make up the messages specifically for use by applications intended to utilize the 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (DSRC/WAVE, referenced in this document simply as “DSRC"), communications systems. Although the scope of this Standard is focused on DSRC, these dialogs, messages, data frames and data elements have been designed, to the extent possible, to be of use for applications that may be deployed in conjunction with other wireless communications technologies.

Tire Rolling Radius Evolution with Tread Depth and the Implications for Tire Replacement on All-Wheel Drive Vehicles

All-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles are becoming more prevalent in the market today. However, it is not well understood what the correct practice is when only one tire on the vehicle needs to be replaced. There are various recommendations and practices provided by tire dealers and car manufacturers to the consumer. The most common recommendation is to replace more than a single tire and match tread depths across all tires. The basis for this recommendation is the idea that tires with different tread depths will have a different number of revolutions per distance traveled due to differences in rolling radius. Mixing tires with different tread depths may cause extra wear or damage to the drivetrain components because, on a vehicle, the tires must rotate at different speeds to travel the same distance.

Electric vehicles have never been more popular, yet fears around being left stranded by an exhausted battery remain a key reason why some car buyers resist making a purchase. Bigger batteries are not always the solution because of the direct link with higher costs and high impact on weight. A re-engineering of the most energy-consuming auxiliaries is mandatory and the thermal management function is on top of the redesign request list. Heat pump solutions are considered one of the best options to save energy and reduce the impact on vehicle range of heating and cooling functions, but the automotive application requires a careful definition of the system features to avoid unjustified increase of complexity as well as an unneeded system oversizing.

The very nature of configuration management is the control of the configuration. This was the initial premise under which the control discipline was established and, later, formalized in DoD-D-5010.19 (1969) into a statement which defined control as: "The systematic evaluation, coordination, approval or disapproval, and implementation of all approved changes in the configuration of a configuration item after formal establishment of its configuration identification."

What this definition does not impart is the scope and magnitude of the configuration change control task, or the rationale for configuration changes. The purpose of this bulletin is to describe the software change control process in the context of a structured programming environment.

The objective of this course is to provide an in-depth understanding of the concepts and principles involved in the Review and Configuration Audit process. It is intended for an individual who has completed a basic introductory course in CM and who requires the deeper knowledge of a CM practitioner rather than a superficial overview.

Technical review and product audit practices described in this text are based on Government requirements. This emphasis is made because the Department of Defense DOD) represents a major customer of goods and services and because the referenced specifications and standards reflect good business practices refined over many years of usage. For commercial companies producing items for other companies or the public, many of these reviews and audits may not be formally implemented. They are, however, an integral and essential part of the systems engineering process.
