Optimization of vehicle side panel to improve crashworthiness.

The front of a car, though susceptible to the biggest impacts in terms of magnitude, has space and additional reinforcement to incorporate various safety measures. The rear has considerable amount of space to contain a proper crash box. The side of the car, though, doesn’t have this flexibility in design, the main limiting parameter being space. Any intrusion into the passenger cabin can result in serious injury or even death. The objective of this work is to improve the crashworthiness of a vehicle’s side so as to reduce intrusion into the passenger cabin. The work is focused on optimizing the door and B pillar. The optimized side panel is compared with the baseline model as per standard. ANSYS solver is used for the simulation. The optimized design applied to the door and B pillar will significantly improve crashworthiness of the vehicle side panel as a whole.

Transient Response Analysis and Synthesis of an FSAE Vehicle using Cornering Compliance

OBJECTIVE Race vehicles are designed to achieve higher lateral acceleration arising at cornering conditions. A focused study on the steady state handling of the car is essential for the analysis of such conditions. The transient response analysis of the car is also equally important to achieve best driver-car relationship and to quantify handling in the range suitable for a racing car. This research aims to investigate the design parameters responsible for the transient characteristics and optimize those design parameters. This research work examines the time-based analysis of the problem to truly capture the non-linear dynamics. Apart from tires, chassis can be tuned to optimize vehicle handling and hence the response times. METHODOLOGY To start with, the system is modelled with governing parameters and simulation is carried out to set baseline configurations. Steady state and transient handling simulations run independent of each other with independent logic, coded on MATLAB.

Current Paper works starts with physical testing the Engine oil pan of the most popular vehicle and build an equivalent simulation model by reverse engineering the design and match similar performance trend in simulation model. After building baseline simulation model, conduct shape, topology, gauge and material optimization to improve weight and performance of Oilpan.

Paper Title - Wiring Harness Optimization towards Wireless vehicle Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective (maximum 100 words)  In current scenario, wiring harness plays a vital role in inter-connecting electrical & electronic components fitted all across the vehicle.  As per cable standard, DIN 72551 or ISO 6722, copper conductors being used in stranded wires against cable cross-section & corresponding weight.  While going complete wire-less requires each component to have its own battery, ground, transmitter & receiver which indeed is a very costly affair to be employed in vehicle as huge development cost is required.  Here I'm suggesting an innovative method to make a vehicle apparently Wire-Less by creating local clusters connected to each other via conventional wiring harness & wire-less module.  Such method will apparently give a look of Wire-less vehicle itself & better advantages in terms of installation, service, troubleshooting, uptime & customer delight.  Moreover, direct benefits of Cost, Weight, FE will also be achieved.

Passenger "Sleeper Bus" Structure, an Optimization Study using Finite Element Analysis

Sleeper buses are increasingly used as connectivity between cities and remote areas with sleeping comfort for passengers. During the normal operation, the bus body is subjected to several loads, external loads from the road (i.e. crossing over a speed bump, breaking & cornering). Moreover, there is a substantial possibility that these loads may lead to a structural failure. Hence, it is necessary to determine stresses occurred in the bus body to ensure its integrity under these driving scenarios. During the accident, rollover/front/rear/side impact, energy absorbing capacity of bus body structure is crucial for safety of passengers. The objective of this study is to reduce weight of bus structure while maintaining cost & safety as constraint. 3D Model prepared in NX and finite element model created in hypermesh ,LS-dyna/optistruct used as solver and post processing done in hyperview. In this study, fully loaded bus with passengers as well as maximum language mass, considered.

Development of Electric Vehicle Controller by using MBD approach

The automobile industry is moving towards electrification of Vehicle to remove the exhaust gas emissions. A project was undertaken to develop Electric Vehicle control system from concept to vehicle trials in less than a year. The complete development cycle of an electronic controller required to be compressed to prepare mule electric vehicle within timeline. Agile methodology has been used for this project instead of waterfall as other control systems were in developing stage; system requirements were changing frequently. This paper presents the electric vehicle control unit development with agile methodology using model based development (MBD) in MATLAB and Simulink environment. The project flow consists of major phases like design of electrical architecture, system requirements specification, selection and setting up the simulation platform, EVCU strategy development, testing on Model in Loop (MIL)/ Hardware in Loop (HIL), vehicle trials.

The SRM is gaining much interest for EVs due to its rare-earth-free characteristic and excellent performance. SRM possess several advantages such as low cost, high efficiency, high power density, fault-tolerant and it can produce extended constant power region, and this makes SRM as viable alternative over conventional PM drives. Objective: The objective of this paper is to establish proof of theoretical concepts related to SRM. The key to achieve an effective SRM modeling is to use a methodology that allow the nonlinearity of its magnetic characteristics to be represented while maximizing the simulation speed. This paper represents how magnetization data obtained from FEA in the form of look up tables is most appropriate way to represent SRM model. In this paper, performance analysis of SRM is done with the help of Open loop and Closed loop MATLAB simulations. These dynamic simulations of SRM will assist in understanding behavior of SRM in various loading and speed conditions.

Noise and vibration simulations method for electric hybrid tractor powertrain.

Internal combustion (IC) engines have been serving as prime source of power in tractors, since late 19th Century. Over this period, there have been significant improvements in IC engine technology leading to increased power density, reduction in tailpipe emissions and refinement in powertrain noise of tractors. As the regulations governing tailpipe emissions continue to be more stringent, original equipment manufacturers also have initiated work on innovative approaches such as diesel-electric hybrid powertrains to ensure compliance with new norms. However, introduction of such technologies may impact customer’s auditory, vibratory and drivability perceptions. Absence of conventional IC engine noise, association of electric whistle and whine, torque changes with activation/de-activation of motors and transmission behavior under transient conditions may result in new NVH issues in hybrid electric vehicles.

"According to Data on Road accidents in India by Transport Research Wing of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, more than 4 Lakhs road accidents happened every year from year 2003 to 2017. Poor road conditions and badly designed roads are the common cause of road accidents besides the driver's negligence. Poor roads and badly designed speed breakers are common in developing countries. Apart from accidents, poor road conditions can cause excessive fuel consumption & damage to vehicles. Road condition monitoring solutions aim to warn the drivers of upcoming bad patch on the road and optionally report road conditions to authorities. There are multiple existing solutions that use motion sensors and GPS to detect a bad patch on the road. The presented solution builds over capability of existing solutions by adding useful features making it more practical and useful.

Automobile Exhaust Emmision Control- A review

Since the 20th century increase in the number of cars in the major cities is been a point of concern because of the toxic gasses being emitted from the engine of an automobile. These gasses are polluting the atmosphere and degrading the air to breathe. The main gasses responsible for the degradation of air quality are carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen. There is a necessity to find ways to reduce the pollution emitted into the atmosphere from the automobile. The source of emission is either evaporation from fuel tank or carburetor which is easy to be dealt with or harmful gasses due to improper combustion which is a concern for the environment. The two ways to reduce these emissions are, modification in the engine to minimize the production of harmful gases and to treat the harmful gasses emitted from the engine before blowing it into the atmosphere from the exhaust. Catalysts help to break harmful gasses into smaller compounds that are environment-friendly.

These kind of situations are tough to handle even if one is victimized . The victim can be rescued on time if proper information about the situation would reach his friends or family . Limitations: In existing system, if the accidental crash happens then signal from airbag unit will wake up the mobile, Once this wake up call happens,it will activate the gsm module. The emergency contacts stored in the mobile will be dialed up and the victim can convey his emergency situation through that. The driver will be rescued only if crash happens. There is no system to rescue the driver if heart attack happens when he is driving.

In the automotive domain, many physical modeling tools are used to model the sub-components and its integration at the system level. Physical Modeling requires high domain expertise and is not only time consuming but is also very 'compute-resource' intensive. Given this trend and their polluting nature they can be noted as sizeable contributors to the air quality issues plaguing the metropolitan cities. With the nation aiming at eradicating the use of internal combustion engines (ICE) in passenger transportation by the year 2030, there have been attempts to convert ICE three-wheelers to battery electric three-wheeler. However, the battery electric three-wheelers, which are quite commonly used for end-mile connectivity, serve to highlight the demerits of the technology pertaining to their range, charge cycle, power to weight ratio, and efficiency. Hydrogen based are fuel cells gaining traction as a potential alternative to batteries due to their efficient and clean power generation.
