Warm Forming of 3t Mg Alloy Sheet for An Automotive Electronic Compressor Case

Recently, the applications of magnesium alloy to automobile and electric parts have been increased because of its high specific strength, excellent machinability, high electrical and thermal conductivity. The efforts of automobile industry to reduce fuel consumption by using lightweight structural materials have accelerated the deep drawing technology of magnesium alloy sheet. In the present study, the basic study to fabricate an automotive compressor case have been carried out. In order to apply ductile fracture criterion to predict the forming failure, critical damage values were determined from uniaxial tensile tests and FE simulations, and then they were expressed as the function of strain rate and temperature. The proposed methodology was applied to design the deep drawing process for fabrication of magnesium automotive compressor case without any defect.

Finite Element Analysis of Pedestrian-City Car Collisions to Assist Design of Pedestrian Friendly Front Structure

Car-to-pedestrian collisions often cause serious injuries and deaths dramatically as pedestrians do not have any protection equipment. In order to design the front structure to be safer for pedestrians, it is necessary to understand kinematics and injury mechanisms of car-pedestrian collisions which can be obtained through the costly full-scale crash test of a dummy or a cadaver. Finite element simulations are an alternative mean which offer information of post-crash kinematics and injury mechanisms. This paper has presented finite element simulations of pedestrian-city car collisions by simulating legform impact test for assessment and validation. It has also been employed to simulate the full-scale pedestrian crash test. The post-crash kinematics and injury mechanisms of the pedestrian have been analysed. With the kinematics and injury information, the bumper beam of the front end of the car has been simply modified by introducing Al 6082 T6 to the bumper beam.

Numerical Analysis on Electromagnetic Forming of Automotive Sheets with Flat Spiral Coil

In this study, numerical simulations of electromagnetic forming (EmF) for automotive sheet metals with flat spiral coil were performed in order to analyze electromagnetic, mechanical behaviors in EmF process. Two automotive sheets which are 5J32 aluminum alloy sheet and DP780 high strength steel sheet having thickness of 1.0mm were utilized. Numerical simulations were conducted with the commercial software LS-Dyna, which is able to fully couple with electromagnetic and mechanical as well as thermal natures in three dimensional spaces. From numerical analysis, electromagnetic quantities such as Lorentz force and mechanical quantities such as deformed shape of sheet metals were examined. At low charge voltage, the simulations of the deformed shape for two workpiece blanks have a good agreement with the experiments.

Development of the Induction Heat Treatment Robot System for the Car-Body Mold using OLP Simulator

Heat treatment for car body's mold is mainly a manual process which is performed by worker. The performance of this process is affected by workers' skill level, and has limitation to maintain uniform product quality. In this study, we developed high frequency heat treatment robot system that implements OLP type simulator to overcome the limitation of manual process, and to improve and stabilize the quality level. Also, we plan to verify the efficiency of robot system and mechanism stability from the early stage through design verification and simulated analysis in development stage. In addition, we plan to study the way to establish optimized D/B for heat treatment criteria for car body mold such as heat treatment speed, interval, etc. via site experiment.

Physical Characteristics of Twin-Tube Shock Absorber

In an automotive suspension, a shock absorber plays a significant role to enhance the vehicle performances, particularly ride comfort and road holding. Because of its important influences on the overall vehicle performances, the understanding of its physical characteristics is essential. Thus, this paper develops a mathematical model of twin-tube shock absorber that is widely used in modern production cars. The model is derived based on a rational polynomial formulation. This formulation generally represents the flow behaviors of fluid across a restriction. Further, simulation results are compared to those obtained from experiments to determine the model accuracy. The result comparison illustrates that the model is able to describe the behavior of shock absorber with slight discrepancies.

Design and Evaluation of Active Front Wheel Steering System Model and Controller

In this study, a model of Active Front wheel Steer (AFS) system are developed and tested. In addition, an Integrated Dynamics Control with Front steer (IDCF) controller is also designed to investigate the performance of AFS system when it is integrated with a brake system. The IDCF system composed of an AFS system and a DYC (Direct Yaw moment Control) system of rear wheels. The AFS controller and IDCF controller are compared under several driving and road conditions with and without braking input and steering input. A 8 degree of freedom vehicle model is also employed to test the controllers. The results show that the model of AFS system shows good kinematic steering assistance function. Steering ratio varies depends on vehicle velocity between 12 and 24. Kinematic stabilization function also shows good performance because yaw rate of AFS vehicle tracks the reference yaw rate.

Experimental Study of cooling of Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in Scooter

The continuously variable transmission (CVT), which was conceptualized more than 500 years ago, is just now beginning to replace traditional transmissions in some automobiles. It is mostly used in scooter transmission. Engine power is transmitted to wheel through belt drive between two pulleys. The diameter of belt contact with pulley can change continuously and hence provide infinite gear ratios between driver and driven shafts. This technology leads to a smoother ride of vehicle. Heat is generated inside CVT due to friction between drive belt and clutch pulley. Amount of heat generated is even more due to clutch slippage during acceleration and deceleration. This will affect the service life of CVT components such as front movable drive (FMD), clutch pulley, clutch outer, and belt. In scooters generally, air cooling is preferred over liquid cooling. Cooling is achieved by incorporating centrifugal fan inside CVT housing.
