This course introduces basic tire mechanics, including tire construction components based on application type, required sidewall stamping in accordance with DoT/ECE regulations, tread patterns, regulatory and research testing on quality, tire inspections and basic tire failure identification. The course will provide you with information that you can use immediately on-the-job and apply to your own vehicle. This course is practical in nature and supplemented with samples and hands-on activities.
This 4-week virtual-only experience, conducted by leading experts in the autonomous vehicle industry and academia, provides an in-depth look at the most common sensor types used in autonomous vehicle applications. By reviewing the theory, working through examples, viewing sensor data, and programming movement of a turtlebot, you will develop a solid, hands-on understanding of the common sensors and data provided by each. The Controller Area Network has become the standard of choice for most automotive manufacturers. Approved for use as an ISO and EPA diagnostic network, its usage continues to grow. This course covers the theory and use of the CAN protocol, and its applications in the automotive industry. Details on how the CAN protocol and other standards (J2411, J2284, J1939, ISO 11898, etc.) complement each other will be presented. Participants will learn about CAN application layers; the latest J1939, J2284, J2411, and IDB standards, regulations, and implementation requirements; and details of device hardware and software interfaces.
The function of powertrain mounts is to securely anchor the engine and gearbox within a vehicle, effectively absorbing vibrations and shielding the vehicle's body from powertrain movements and road irregularities. Traditionally crafted from aluminum, sheet metal, or cast iron, there has been a notable transition towards employing fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) as a viable alternative. This shift is motivated by the potential to reduce weight and cost, alongside enhancing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics. This study aims to evaluate the relative strengths of existing brackets compared to those made of FRP, with a focus on their modal response and crash resistance. Due to the absence of a standardized method for modelling orthotropic materials in powertrain mounting brackets, this paper proposes a systematic approach to address this gap.
This research focuses on optimizing vehicle ride and handling performance by utilizing a tuning specifications range. Traditional approaches to refining these aspects involve extensive physical testing, which consumes both time and resources. In contrast, our study introduces a novel methodology leveraging virtual Subjective Rating through driving simulators. This approach aims to significantly reduce tuning time and costs, consequently streamlining overall development expenditures. The core objective is to enhance vehicle ride and handling dynamics, ensuring a superior driving experience for end-users. By meticulously defining and implementing tuning specifications, we aim to fine-tune various parameters affecting performance, including suspension settings and overall vehicle dynamics. In this study, we optimized tuning specifications using advanced software such as Adams/Car and ModeFrontier. Design of experiments and optimizations were conducted in ModeFrontier.
This paper studies design parameters, selection of materials and structural analysis for an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) BAJA roll cage at the event site in any possible situation. SolidWorks 2022 was used for creating the prototype of the roll cage and then both static structural as well as dynamic crash analysis for the roll cage was done using Altair HyperWorks 2023 for various collisions like front, rear, side, rollover, torsional, front bump, rear bump, front roll over, side roll over and rear roll over. In addition to their corresponding deformation, Von Mises stresses were observed and a safety factor was calculated for these load cases which was found to be in the range of 1.5 to 3. Without reducing the roll cage’s strength, the roll cage designed for a four-wheel drive configuration is developed with driver comfort and safety in mind. Finding the optimal safety factor is the core objective of the analysis, as it ensures in any situation, the ATV’s roll cage will stay secure.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems is a growing technology in automotive industry, intended to provide safety and comfort to the passengers with the help of variety of sensors like radar, camera, LIDAR etc. The camera sensors in ADAS used extensively for the purpose of object detection and classification which are used in functions like Traffic sign recognitions, Lane detections, Object detections and many more. The development and testing of camera-based sensor involves the greater technologies in automotive industry, especially the validation of camera hardware and software. The testing can be done by various process and methods like real environment test, model-based testing, Hardware and Software in loop testing. A fully matured ADAS camera system in the market comes after crossing all these verification process, yet there are lot of new failures popping up in the field with this ADAS system.
