2022-01-0780
Centrifugal pumps are widely used in different thermal fluid systems in automobile industries. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of such a thermal fluid system depends on the accurate component modeling of the system components. This paper presents CFD analysis of a centrifugal pump with two different approaches: Transient (moving grid) and the steady state - Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) methods using a commercial CFD solver Simerics MP+®. In addition, flow and pressure drop data obtained using CFD simulations of a vehicle coolant hydraulic system was compared to results from rig test data. The Transient method incorporates the real motion of the pump blades geometry and temporal flow solutions are obtained for instantaneous positions of the blade geometry. In MRF approach, the flow governing equations for the stationary zone are solved in the absolute/inertial reference frame, whereas flow in the moving zone is solved in the relative/non-inertial reference frame.

2022-01-0781
In the modern practice of the vehicle crashworthy design development and its impact performance validation, virtual full vehicle crash models have been widely and successfully utilized as the analysis tool by many safety CAE engineers. Recently, a typical full-vehicle front impact model has grown in size up to over 3 million finite elements to enable analysis of highly localized and transient responses of vehicle structure deformation under the impulsive loads. This full vehicle model takes 10~15 computer hours per run even on a fast Massively Parallel Process (MPP) server. The CPU time will increase if the full-vehicle model is applied for analysis of the offset-barrier events in which the test vehicle receives barrier impact loading for a longer duration.

Nonlinear Multi-Fidelity Bayesian Optimization: An Application in the Design of Blast Mitigating Structures

2022-03-29
2022-01-0790
A common scenario in engineering design is the availability of several black-box functions that describe an event with different levels of accuracy and evaluation cost. Solely employing the highest fidelity, often the most expensive, black-box function leads to lengthy and costly design cycles. Multi-fidelity modeling improves the efficiency of the design cycle by combining information from a small set of observations of the high-fidelity function and large sets of observations of the low-fidelity, fast-to-evaluate functions. In the context of Bayesian optimization, the most popular multi-fidelity model is the auto-regressive (AR) model, also known as the co-kriging surrogate. The main building block of the AR model is a weighted sum of two Gaussian processes (GPs). Therefore, the AR model is well suited to exploit information generated by sources that present strong linear correlations.

Magnetically coupled resonance wireless power transmission technology (MCR-WPT), as a technological innovation in the electric vehicle industry, is of great significance to promote the development of the electric vehicle industry chain. The current wireless charging technology is affected by the design of the vehicle itself, the distance between the vehicle-mounted part of the wireless charging and the ground is not fixed. And the changeable parking attitude will cause the projection of the transmitting coil and the receiving coil to deviate. Therefore, reasonable matching of transmission frequency, matching impedance and other parameters is of great significance for optimizing power transmission efficiency. This paper establishes a mathematical model of transmission frequency, matching impedance, distance between two coils and wireless power transmission efficiency.

Computational expenses aside, simulating and optimizing pumps operating at pressures near the liquid’s saturation pressure needs complete modeling of cavitation physics. This becomes critical in high-temperature applications since the saturation pressure increases with temperature and the pumps become more prone to cavitation. In the present work, the performance of a centrifugal pump was improved by delaying the sudden onset of cavitation at higher flow rates through constrained optimization of impeller geometry. The optimized designs generated over 25% higher head at the operating point and performed better than the baseline design across the range of operation. Constraints were dictated by geometric/ packaging limitations in order to ensure that the optimized impeller can be retrofitted into an existing fluid-power system. A Gaussian Process Regressor (GPR) based metamodel was constructed utilizing a database of designs generated through Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS).

2022-01-0786
When dump trucks unload dusty materials, dust particles with a diameter of 1 to 75 microns slide out of the dump body and float into the air. Dust particles naturally settle down spending a few hours, which causes air pollution. People who work in this environment daily suffer serious physical harm. To study the movement of dust particles during the unloading process, a scaled-down model is used to simulate the process of dump truck unloading gravel, and a high frame rate camera is used to record the movement trajectory of dust particles during the unloading process. In this paper, by observing the movement process of unloading dust particles by dump trucks, based on the principle of dynamics, a mathematical model describing the unloading of dust particles in the dump body and a mathematical model of the diffusion of dust particles in the air are established. Take the small gravel sampled at the construction site as an example of the experiment.

2022-01-0783
Identifying edge cases for designed algorithms is critical for functional safety in autonomous driving deployment. In order to find the feasible boundary of designed algorithms, simulations are heavily used. However, simulations for autonomous driving validation are expensive due to the requirement of visual rendering, physical simulation, and AI agents. In this case, common sampling techniques, such as Monte Carlo Sampling, become computationally expensive due to their sample inefficiency. To improve sample efficiency and minimize the number of simulations, we propose a tailored active learning approach combining the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and the Gaussian Process Regressor (GPR). The SVM learns the feasible boundary iteratively with a new sampling point via active learning. Active Learning is achieved by using the information of the decision boundary of the current SVM and the uncertainty metric calculated by the GPR.

Focusing on the dual-mode dual-fuel (DMDF) combustion concept, a combined optimization of the piston bowl geometry with the fuel injection strategy was conducted at low, mid, and high loads. By coupling the KIVA-3V code with the enhanced genetic algorithm (GA), a total of 14 parameters including the piston bowl geometric parameters and the injection parameters were optimized with the objective of meeting Euro VI regulations while improving the fuel efficiency. The optimal piston bowl shape coupled with the corresponding injection strategy was summarized and integrated at various loads. Furthermore, the effects of the key geometric parameters were investigated in terms of organizing the in-cylinder flow, influencing the energy distribution, and affecting the emissions. Rising gas prices and increasingly stringent vehicle emissions standards have pushed automakers to increase fuel economy. Mass reduction is the most practical method to increase fuel economy of a vehicle. New materials and CAE technology allow for lightweight automotive components to be designed and manufactured, which outperform traditional component designs. Topology optimization and other design optimization techniques are widely used by designers to create lightweight structural automotive parts. Other design optimization techniques include free-size, gauge, and size optimization. These optimization techniques are typically used in sequence or independently during the design process. Performing various types of design optimization simultaneously is only practical in certain cases, where different parts of the structure have different manufacturing constraints.

Separation of Average Torque and Torque Ripple in PMSMs Considering Saturation, Cross-Coupling and Flux Harmonics Using Frozen Permeability Method

2022-03-29
2022-01-0730
The separation and analysis of the torque of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is of great significance for optimizing the torque output of the motor. Based on the frozen permeability method, the virtual work principle (VWP) or the Maxwell stress tensor method (MSTM) is often used to separate the torque for torque analysis. However, considering the influence of non-ideal factors such as motor saturation, cross-coupling and flux harmonics, there are differences in torque separation between the VWP and the MSTM, which has been researched and analyzed in this paper. Based on this, for the assisted airspace barrier design of a surface-inserted permanent magnet synchronous motor, to conduct theoretical research on the torque optimization design, this paper uses the VWP to separate the average torque and the MSTM to separate the torque ripple.

2022-03-29
2022-01-0733
Traditionally, the controls system in production vehicles with automatic transmission interprets the driver’s accelerator pedal position as a demand for transmission input torque. However, with the advent of electrified vehicles, where actuators are located at different positions in the drivetrain, and of autonomous vehicles, which are self-driving, it is more convenient to interpret the demand (either human or virtual) in vehicle acceleration or wheel torque domain. To this end, a Wheel Torque-based longitudinal Control (WTC) framework was developed, wherein demands can be converted accurately between the vehicle acceleration or wheel torque domain and the transmission assembly input torque domain.

2022-01-0725
An accurate finite element (FE) model is the basis for the numerical prediction of vibration and noise of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). This paper provides an equivalent modeling method of PMSMs considering the orthotropic material parameters of the stator system. First, a theoretical analysis of the influence of orthotropic material parameters on modal characteristics is implemented. Subsequently, the influence of orthotropic material parameters on the modal frequency of the stator is analyzed through the FE method. Then, the modal parameters of the stator core and the stator assembly are obtained by modal tests. According to the equivalent FE model and modal parameters, the orthotropic material parameters of the stator system are acquired. Moreover, to save the calculation time and simplify the modal identification process, the influence of windings is taken into account through additional mass and additional stiffness during the modeling process.

2022-01-0726
In recent years, bearing electrical failures have been a significant concern in electric cars, restricting electric engine life. This work aims to introduce a coating approach for preventing electrical erosion on 52100 alloy steel samples, the most common material used on manufacturing bearings. This paper discusses the causes of shaft voltage and bearing currents, and summarizes standard electrical bearing failure mechanisms, such as morphological damages and lubrication failures. Alumina coatings are suitable for insulating the 52100 alloy steel samples because alumina coatings provide excellent insulation, hardness, and corrosion resistance, among other characteristics. The common method to coat an insulated alumina coating on the bearing is thermal spraying, but overspray can cause environmental issues, and the coating procedures are costly and time-consuming.

Research on Heat Dissipation Performance of Automobile Motor Based on Heat Pipe Optimization Design

2022-03-29
2022-01-0729
In new energy vehicles, the electric motor, as the main power source, is developing toward high power density. However, its heat generation problem always affects the overall performance of the motor, so an efficient motor cooling system is especially important. In desert or water-scarce areas, liquid cooling cannot meet the needs of new energy vehicle motor cooling. When glycol or other liquid coolants are low or depleted, motor heat dissipation becomes less effective. Heat pipe is a heat dissipation technology with advantages such as fast thermal response and light weight. In this paper, by improving the heat pipe arrangement and reducing the overall mass of the heat dissipation system, a heat pipe optimization design based on a drive motor heat dissipation scheme is proposed, and the overall stability of the motor working under high temperature conditions is improved.
