2013-01-2192
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide the ability to perform a variety of experimental tests of systems and unproven research technologies, including new autopilot systems and obstacle avoidance capabilities, without risking the lives of human pilots. This paper describes the activities of design, optimization, and flight operations of a UAV conceived at Clarkson University (USA) and equipped to perform wind speed measurements to support wind farmsite planning. The UAV design has been assisted and validated by the use of an automatic virtual environment for the assisted design of civil UAVs. This tool can be used as a “computing machine” for civil UAVs. The operator inputs the mission profile and other generic parameters and data about performance, aerodynamics, and weight breakdown are extracted. A mathematical model of the UAV for flight simulation and its dynamic computations, along with automatic drawing is also produced.

(CTAS) in the development of composite patch repair techniques through an internally funded research and development program (IRAD) prior to the award of the C141-B Drop-In-Repair (DIR) Contract and subsequently in supporting the various activities of fulfilling the contractual requirements after the contract award, for Warner-Robins Air Logistics Center (WRALC) during August 1993 through October 1994. ...WRALC had decided to repair most of the weep holes (limited to a maximum of fifteen holes per wing), using Boron/epoxy composite patch doublers, as a near-term remedial measure, in lieu of full wing plank replacement. ...Although the overall C141-B DIR Program involved other repair and maintenance work, CTAS was able to respond to the challenges of the program on short notice, due to the groundwork laid with the composite patch repair technology through the IRAD Program. Also, this paper describes the quality assessment of the manufactured and the installed Boron/epoxy patches through the non-destructive inspection (NDI) data acquired for the patches before and after installation on the aircraft.

2001-01-2627
Before new technologies can be applied within the aviation industry, they have to be carefully tested according to international standards and approved by the OEM’s. To implement the new alternative SLCR-Laser coating removal process into the A/C maintenance centers, it was tested in a comprehensive testing program based on the SAE MA4872 guidelines and additional requirements given by Airbus and Boeing. This program was performed by Lufthansa Technik AG, Hamburg and SLCR Lasertechnik GmbH, Düren in close collaboration with EADS Airbus and the Boeing Corp. The paper depicts the results gained during the tests conducted according to the SAE document and it presents some lay-outs of respective systems.
