Gasoline Particulate Filter Performance from Fresh to Full Useful Life.

2024-11-05
2024-01-4311
The goal of this study was to track the evolution of tailpipe particulate emissions of a modern GTDI light duty vehicle under typical North American mileage accumulation; from a fresh state to 4000-mile, and finally to its full useful life of 150,000-miles. For this purpose, a production TWC + GPF after-treatment system was installed in place of the T3B85 TWC-only system. ...Noting that the investigation is an extension of previously reported results from the GPF performance from 0 to 4000-miles which characterized the early life evolution of tailpipe particulate emissions, specifically mass (PM) and number (PN).

Ionization Based Sensor for Early Detection of Thermal Runaway Events in Lithium-Ion Batteries

2024-11-05
2024-01-4326
Lithium-ion and lithium-metal battery cells are susceptible to a phenomenon known as thermal runaway under failure conditions. Thermal runaway entails a rapid escalation in battery cell temperature accompanied by the emission of flammable lithium ions, particulates, electrons, hydrocarbon, and hydrogen gases. These gases pose a significant ignition risk, potentially leading to fires and endangering occupants and bystanders. Therefore, the timely detection of thermal runaway is paramount for ensuring safety in proximity to such battery systems. Traditionally, thermal runaway sensors comprise intricate assemblies of pressure, temperature, and gas sensors, strategically positioned at the pressure relief valve of battery modules. Calibration of all sensors is essential to reliably detect thermal runaway conditions.

Complex and Nonlinear Resistance Changes of NMC/Gr cells during ageing

2024-11-05
2024-01-4325
Resistance decreases substantially in early life followed by a slow subsequent increase. At low temperatures, resistance stays significantly lower even at end-of-life relative to beginning-of-life, while at high temperatures the opposite is observed.

Applying Automotive EDR Data to Traffic Crash Reconstruction

2024-10-22
EDR's were first installed in 1994 and are now installed in 99% of new light vehicles sold in the US. In the US EDR’s are not required, but vehicles with EDR’s made after 9/1/2012 must meet minimum standardized content requirements of 49 CFR, Part 563 including speed, throttle, brake on/off and Delta V.  Data must be retrievable with a publicly available tool.  Only a few manufacturers install EDR’s worldwide currently, but the EU and China are adopting regulations to require them in the next few years.

Novel approach to optimize the ride and handling performance by reducing development time and cost

2024-10-17
2024-28-0043
This research focuses on optimizing vehicle ride and handling performance by utilizing a tuning specifications range. Traditional approaches to refining these aspects involve extensive physical testing, which consumes both time and resources. In contrast, our study introduces a novel methodology leveraging virtual Subjective Rating through driving simulators. This approach aims to significantly reduce tuning time and costs, consequently streamlining overall development expenditures. The core objective is to enhance vehicle ride and handling dynamics, ensuring a superior driving experience for end-users. By meticulously defining and implementing tuning specifications, we aim to fine-tune various parameters affecting performance, including suspension settings and overall vehicle dynamics. In this study, we optimized tuning specifications using advanced software such as Adams/Car and ModeFrontier. Design of experiments and optimizations were conducted in ModeFrontier.
