A Methodology for Accelerated Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue Life Evaluation of Advanced Composites

2024-06-01
2024-26-0421
In this paper, we employ a thermo-mechanical fatigue model based on an accelerated fatigue test and life prediction under hot-to-cold cycles. Thermo-mechanical strain-controlled stress evolution is modeled and tested for fitting fatigue model parameters over thermal cycles under different creep stresses. ...A scheme for remaining user life (RUL) prediction is developed and the scheme is validated using different thermo-mechanical cycles as compared to the data used for fitting the constitutive model parameters. ...To generalize the life prediction methodology, a scheme based on finite element stress analysis-based progressive damage methodology is employed, which can be employed for complex composite structures involving different complex damage mechanisms and final failure modes.

2017-01-2432
According to TMF analysis, cylinder head life which contains the exhaust manifold fulfilled the life cycle target. Temperature and vibration test were done on rig test, good correlation is shown between test and simulation results. ...Moreover, due to shorter length, lighter weight, and less component connections, the exhaust manifold and hot end durability will improve apparently. In this work, an advanced cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold is adopted in a three-cylinder turbo engine. ...To validate the exhaust manifold and hot end durability, series simulation and test validation work have been done. Firstly, overall steady state and transient temperature simulation was done for global model.

2020-01-0398
The generator is an important loaded component of an engine front end accessory drive system (EFEADS). With a huge moment of inertia and a highest running speed, the vibration and noise often occurs in operation, which has an effect on the service life. ...With a huge moment of inertia and a highest running speed, the vibration and noise often occurs in operation, which has an effect on the service life. Thus an overrunning alternator decoupler (OAD) is used in the EFEADS for reducing the vibration of system.

Comparison of Wire Rope Life Using Nylon and Steel Sheaves-Part 1: Test Methodology and Comparison of Wire Rope Endurance Life

1979-02-01
790904
A methodology was developed to test wire rope endurance characteristics to ANSI B30.5 removal criteria. Under field simulated loads, wire rope was cycled so that each rope section had 180° contact with one nylon sheave and one steel sheave until the rope replacement criteria designated by wire breaks was attained. At a load equal to 10% and 20% of the ultimate strength of the wire rope, the rope at the nylon sheave side endured 4.5 and 2.2 times as many cycles as compared to the wire rope on the steel sheave side.

2019-26-0291
Using these three datasets Vibration Fatigue analysis is performed in order to evaluate the Fatigue life of the Subsystem. The results from the vibrational fatigue analysis are correlated with the test results from Accelerated Endurance Test and Rig testing data, and we achieved 90% correlation between the vibrational fatigue analysis and the test data results.

This document specified the main dimensions and tolerances which affect interchangeability between end yoke earwork for the most common North American-used universal joints. Dimensions and tolerances of the mating universal joints are left to the discretion of the universal joint manufacturers. ...The term “earwork” refers to the configuration and geometry defining end yoke connections directly provided for universal joint cross attachment of drivelines. Earwork for certain styles of universal joint connections and flange connections have for a long time been proprietary to certain manufacturers. ...For an understanding of these end yoke styles, please refer to SAE J901. There are earwork forms that still are proprietary and are not covered by this document.

Design and Fatigue Life Comparison of Steel and Composite Leaf Spring

2012-04-16
2012-01-0944
It has been a significant challenge to reduce weights of the vehicles to satisfy the regulations that require development of environmentally-safe vehicles with low CO2 emissions. The conventional leaf springs, designed for the optimized performance together with safety factors, are made of steel. However, it is considered that the steel leaf springs are replaced by lighter ones in order to fulfill the specified requirements. Fiber reinforced composite materials with polymer based matrix offer a great potential for manufacturing leaf springs with lightweight, high mechanical and fatigue performance. Therefore, leaf spring manufacturers have great interest in those materials to replace steel parts with the composite ones and an increasing number of studies have been published in the literature in recent years. In this study, fiber reinforced composite compared with steel leaf springs based on endurance rig tests will be presented.

Life Cycle Considerations as a Foundation for Improved Cost Assessments

2000-04-26
2000-01-1481
Key drivers in our global economy are mainly cost. The growing importance of environmental themes does not change this view. Today very often economic performance and environmental friendliness are considered to be non-compatible. The reasoning for this is mainly, that environmental protection is seen defensive and end-of-pipe oriented. If an organizations emphasis is only legal compliance, such arguments are especially true. Here filters, sewage plants and waste management are real cost drivers. In order to overcome this non-beneficial situation, new approaches are inevitable. Offensive approaches are required to meet both, economic and environmental targets. LCA has in the past only been used to assess a systems environmental performance. Therefore many data were collected and assessed, but only from an environmental standpoint. However, this time and cost intensive data collection has also significantly contributed to arguments against the use of LCA.
