The ability to personalize air travel through the use of an on-demand, highly distributed air transportation system will provide the degree of freedom and control that Americans enjoy in other aspects of their life. ...This new capability, of traveling when, where, and how we want with greatly enhanced mobility, accessibility, and speed requires vehicle and airspace technologies to provide the equivalent of an internet PC ubiquity, to an air transportation system that now exists as a centralized hub and spoke mainframe NASA airspace related research in this new category of aviation has been conducted through the Small Aircraft Transportation (SATS) project, while the vehicle technology efforts have been conducted in the Personal Air Vehicle sector of the Vehicle Systems Program. ...This new capability, of traveling when, where, and how we want with greatly enhanced mobility, accessibility, and speed requires vehicle and airspace technologies to provide the equivalent of an internet PC ubiquity, to an air transportation system that now exists as a centralized hub and spoke mainframe NASA airspace related research in this new category of aviation has been conducted through the Small Aircraft Transportation (SATS) project, while the vehicle technology efforts have been conducted in the Personal Air Vehicle sector of the Vehicle Systems Program. The PAV sector technology research conducted over the past several years is described, including intelligent avionics for ease of use, integrated low noise propulsion, advanced internal combustion engines, low cost variable pitch ducted propellers, lean design structures, quality assurance based certification regulations, a laminar flow fuselage with integrated aero-propulsion, advanced vehicle concepts, and high density airspace simulations.

A Personal Plane Air Transportation System - The PPlane Project

2011-10-18
2011-01-2697
The seventh European Framework Program (FP7) “Personal Plane” project (PPlane) aims at developing system ideas to enable personal air transport in the long term (2030 and beyond). ...A systematic and innovative approach has been developed and implemented within the PPlane project in order to understand and analyze customers' needs and to propose novel ideas for a Personal Air Transport System (PATS). This system would satisfy the end users while respecting all environmental and social constraints. ...The preliminary assumption made in the PPlane project is that automatisms should be developed to enable a “regular Joe” to use a personal aircraft, in various weather conditions, without any command and control difficulties, using a “push button” navigation interface.

Personal Air Transportation: An Analysis of the Transportation Research Board's Review of the Small Aircraft Transportation System and Other Recommendations

2003-03-03
2003-01-1347
With refinement of jet engines and the technology from the Internet Age, personal air transportation could now be a reality for the rest of the nation. A new generation of advanced, small aircraft promise to significantly reduce the costs of jets and new Airborne Internet systems are being tested to replace the 50-year old radar systems. ...The Jet Age brought high-speed air transportation, drastically shortening travel time. Indeed, jets made the world seem smaller. ...In order to make air service affordable and air traffic manageable, however, a hub-and-spoke system was developed which limited air service to large cities and the airlines schedule, except for those with personal aircraft.

Cl/Cd Ratio & Competitiveness of Personal Aviation & Aircars

1999-08-17
1999-01-2893
A new application is proposed for a light aircraft in personal transportation - that is of a long range grand tourism vehicle; the role it can perform much better than an automobile. ...A convertible road to air vehicle (aircar) having a high CL/CD ratio is considered to be the most suitable means of personal transportation in the future. A rather low CL/CD of previously built aircars is considered to be one of the reasons of their failure in the past. ...A convertible road to air vehicle (aircar) having a high CL/CD ratio is considered to be the most suitable means of personal transportation in the future.

Air Transportation in the Eastern Corridor

1966-02-01
660332
The potentials of short haul air transportation systems are projected to the mid-1970 and 1980 periods. The costs and operational characteristics of these systems are sensitive to the size and nature of the travel market which, at the present time, is not well defined. ...However, indications are that air transportation could hold the key to the solution of the problems of short haul travel in heavily populated areas.

A Systems Approach to Air Transportation

1970-02-01
700337
An attempt is made to describe a systems approach to planning the development of national transportation systems. A transportation systems development process is defined as made up of activities such as policy making, planning, and systems analysis and actions comprising decisions and implementation programs. ...It is concluded that the present process of transportation development is far from rational or systematic and that major changes are required.

What is the Animal Air Transportation Association?

1980-09-01
801071
This paper deals with the history of the air transport of animals, of the efforts by various organizations to help resolve some of the problems, and of the birth and development of a unique organization to deal with all aspects of animal transport problems, the Animal Air Transportation Association (AATA). The capabilities of AATA largely are due to the breadth of membership, which includes unlimited expertise in every phase and area of concern in this vital global industry. ...This paper deals with the history of the air transport of animals, of the efforts by various organizations to help resolve some of the problems, and of the birth and development of a unique organization to deal with all aspects of animal transport problems, the Animal Air Transportation Association (AATA).

The Successful Personal Air Vehicle: Business Case Risk Reduction

2006-08-30
2006-01-2431
The development of a universal personal air vehicle has been the dream of aeronautical visionaries since before the time of the Wright brothers' first flight. ...This paper shows that in the current environment there are few truly technical barriers to the development of a low-cost personal air vehicle. Instead, the market, regulatory, and program issues have come to dominate the problem. ...This means that the current impediment to the development of personal air vehicles is essentially an issue of finding a means to “close the business case.”

CHALLENGES OF SHORT-HAUL AIR TRANSPORTATION

1975-02-01
750586
Short-haul air transportation is one of the most challenging of all modes of transportation. The short-haul passenger market represents approximately 40 percent of the total U.S. domestic market.

The United States Post Office Department is one of the world's largest consolidators of air traffic. Thus, we are deeply interested in exploring the potential for containerization to expedite service, eliminate damage, and reduce terminal handling costs. ...The Department considers rigid containers and pallets as carrier facilities, but recognizes that their optimum use requires solution of many problems affecting rates, service, cost, and division of mail traffic between air carriers.

NASA’s Role in Air Transportation

1966-02-01
660169
The mission of NASA in aeronautics is “to conduct research on the problems of flight with a view to their practical solution.” The author in discussing the NASA mission, breaks it down into three major areas: advanced research, applied technology, and developmental technology. The discussion is based on specific aircraft. Among these are the V/STOL transports, the SST, and hypersonic cruise vehicles.
