Maintaining and Enhancing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems with Connectivity

The power of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) continues to increase alongside vehicle code and software complexity. To ensure ADAS functionality and maximize safety, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must adopt a solution that allows them to mine data, extract meaningful information, send remote software updates and bug fixes, and manage software complexity. All of this is possible with an embedded telematics-based software and data management solution. Event-based logging enables OEMs to actively measure ADAS effectiveness and performance. It allows them to analyze driver behaviors, such as whether response times increase after a certain time of day, and adjust the ADAS settings to increase functionality, such as providing an earlier warning or automated response.

Evaluation of TPMS Structures for the Design of High Performance Heat Exchangers

The development of the additive manufacturing technology has enabled the design of components with complex structures that were previously unfeasible with conventional techniques. Among them, the Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures are gaining scientific interest in several applications. Thanks to their high surface-to-volume ratio, lightweight construction, and exceptional mechanical properties, TPMS structures are being investigated for the production of high-performance heat exchangers to be adopted in different industrial fields, such as automotive and aerospace. Another significant advantage of the TPMS structures is their high degree of design flexibility. Each structure is created by replicating a characteristic unit cell in the three spatial dimensions. The three key parameters, namely cell type, cell dimension and wall thickness can be adjusted to provide considerable versatility in the design process.

Reducing Human Driver Error and Setting Realistic Expectations with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Thousands die or are injured each year in automobile crashes. Reducing the number of these tragedies requires reframing our approach to vehicle- and human-based transportation mobility and depends on whether the mobility industry and individual human drivers take a more aggressive approach to saving lives and preventing injuries. Bringing automated driving systems technologies into the advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) and connected vehicle space will help humans drive more safely and better prepare us for automated vehicles (AVs). Reducing Human Driver Error and Setting Realistic Expectations with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems discusses the recent Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety report which shows that ADAS can indeed work. The path forward requires combining ADAS and ADS implementation with infrastructure engineering, law enforcement, education, emergency response, and public policy, with the goal of reaching zero deaths and serious injuries.

Eliminating Uneven Illumination for Accurate Lane Line Detection: A Dark Channel Prior Algorithm Approach

Accurately detecting lane lines remains a challenging task, especially with low-quality cameras due to the complex environment such as haze, uneven lighting, and shadows of actual roads. Despite numerous studies, lane line detection algorithms are still required to be improved for practical applications. In this work, we propose a new lane detection method that incorporates the brightness estimation concept of the single-scale retinex (SSR) algorithm into the dark channel prior (DCP) algorithm for image preprocessing. The improved DCP algorithm is used to estimate the atmospheric light intensity and remove haze noise, while simultaneously enhancing image contrast to reduce the difficulty of lane detection, especially under uneven lighting conditions, then followed by perspective transformation and HSV color space (hue, saturation, value) conversion, and finally, lane line recognition and tracking are performed using sliding windows and histogram statistics.

Fuel economy improvement of Class 8 long-haul trucks has been a constant topic of discussion in the commercial vehicle industry due to the significant potential it offers in reducing GHG emissions and operational costs. Among the different vehicle categories in on-road transportation, Class 8 long-haul trucks are a significant contributor to overall GHG emissions. Furthermore, with the upcoming 2027 GHG emission and low-NOx regulations, advanced powertrain technologies will be needed to meet these stringent standards. Connectivity-based powertrain optimization is one such technology that many fleets are adopting to achieve significant fuel savings at a relatively lower technology cost. With advancements in vehicle connectivity technologies for onboard computing and sensing, the full potential of connected vehicles in reducing fuel consumption can be realized through V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication.

Hierarchical Control Strategy of Predictive Energy Management for Hybrid Commercial Vehicle Based on ADAS Map

Considering the change of vehicle future power demand in the process of energy distribution can improve the fuel saving effect of hybrid system. However, current studies are mostly based on historical information to predict the future power demand, where it is difficult to guarantee the accuracy of prediction. To tackle this problem, this paper combines hybrid energy management with predictive cruise control, proposing a hierarchical control strategy of predictive energy management (PEM) that includes two layers of algorithms for speed planning and energy distribution. In the interest of decreasing the energy consumed by power components and ensuring transportation timeliness, the upper-level introduces a predictive cruise control algorithm while considering vehicle weight and road slope, planning the future vehicle speed during long-distance driving.

New Controller Evaluation Techniques for Autonomously Driven Heavy-Duty Convoys

Platooning vehicles present novel pathways to saving fuel during transportation. With the rise of autonomous solutions, platooning becomes an increasingly apparent sector requiring the application of this new technology. Platooning vehicles travel together intending to reduce aerodynamic resistance during operation. Drafting allows following vehicles to increase fuel economy and save money on refueling, whether that be at the pump or at a charging station. However, autonomous solutions are still in infancy, and controller evaluation is an exciting challenge proposed to researchers. This work brings forth a new application of an emissions quantification metric called vehicle-specific power (VSP). Rather than utilize its emissions investigative benefits, the present work applies VSP to heterogeneous Class 8 Heavy-Duty truck platoons as a means of evaluating the efficacy of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC).

Performance and Network Architecture Options of Consolidated Object Data Service for Multi-RAT Vehicular Communication

With the proliferation of ADAS and autonomous systems, the quality and quantity of the data to be used by vehicles has become crucial. In-vehicle sensors are evolving, but their usability is limited to their field of view and detection distance. V2X communication systems solve these issues by creating a cooperative perception domain amongst road users and the infrastructure by communicating accurate, real-time information. In this paper, we propose a novel Consolidated Object Data Service (CODS) for multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) V2X communication. This service collects information using BSM packets from the vehicular network and perception information from infrastructure-based sensors. The service then fuses the collected data, offering the communication participants with a consolidated, deduplicated, and accurate object database. Since fusing the objects is resource intensive, this service can save in-vehicle computation costs.

Data Association between Perception and V2V Communication Sensors

The connectivity between vehicles, infrastructure, and other traffic participants brings a new dimension to automotive safety applications. Soon all the newly produced cars will have Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication modems alongside the existing Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS). It is essential to identify the different sensor measurements for the same targets (Data Association) to use connectivity reliably as a safety feature alongside the standard ADAS functionality. Considering the camera is the most common sensor available for ADAS systems, in this paper, we present an experimental implementation of a Mahalanobis distance-based data association algorithm between the camera and the Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication sensors. The implemented algorithm has low computational complexity and the capability of running in real-time. One can use the presented algorithm for sensor fusion algorithms or higher-level decision-making applications in ADAS modules.

Comparing the Performance of Different Heavy Duty Platooning Control Strategies

Platooning is a promising technology which can mitigate greenhouse gas impacts and reduce transportation energy consumption. Platooning is a coordinated driving strategy where trucks align themselves in order to realize aerodynamic benefits to reduce required motive force. The aerodynamic benefit is seen as either a “pull” effect experienced by the following vehicles or a “push” effect experienced by the leader. The energy savings magnitude increases nonlinearly as headway (following distance) is reduced [1]. In efforts to maximize energy savings, cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) is utilized to maintain relatively short headways. However, when platooning is attempted in the real world, small transient accelerations caused by imperfect control result in observed energy savings being less than expected values. This study analyzes the performance of a recently developed nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) platooning strategy over challenging terrain.

Light Commercial Vehicle ADAS-Oriented Modelling: An Optimization-Based Conversion Tool from Multibody to Real-Time Vehicle Dynamics Model

In the last few years, the number of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on road vehicles has been increased with the aim of dramatically reducing road accidents. Therefore, the OEMs need to integrate and test these systems, to comply with the safety regulations. To lower the development cost, instead of experimental testing, many virtual simulation scenarios need to be tested for ADAS validation. The classic multibody vehicle approach, normally used to design and optimize vehicle dynamics performance, is not always suitable to cope with these new tasks; therefore, real-time lumped-parameter vehicle models implementation becomes more and more necessary. This paper aims at providing a methodology to convert experimentally validated light commercial vehicles (LCV) multibody models (MBM) into real-time lumped-parameter models (RTM).

Real-Time Monitoring of Tire Condition with Fast Detection Passive and Wireless TPMS

Accurate tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is of great practical importance and the reliability and safety of its power supply module has great concern. The piezoelectric-based surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor is considered to have great potential in this field because of its passive, wireless and small size advantages. This paper presents the application of passive and wireless SAW sensors for real-time tire condition monitoring. The pressure sensitive structure is optimized and a three-resonator structure is also designed sensing temperature and pressure. Furthermore, a fast detection system is developed to realize high-speed signal acquisition. At last, experiments are executed and the SAW temperature and pressure sensor property is measured.

Testing of Heavy Truck Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Crash Mitigation Systems

Modern heavy vehicles may be equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) designed to increase highway safety. Depending on the vehicle or manufacturer, these systems may detect objects in a driver’s blind spot, provide an alert when the ADAS determines that the vehicle is leaving its lane of travel without the use of a turn signal, or notify the driver when certain road signs are detected. ADASs also include adaptive cruise control, which adjusts the vehicle’s set cruise speed to maintain a safe following distance when a slower vehicle is detected ahead of the truck. In addition, the ADAS may have a Collision Mitigation System (CMS) component that is designed to help drivers respond to roadway situations and reduce the severity of crashes. CMSs typically use radar or a combination of radar and optical technologies to detect objects such as vehicles or pedestrians in the vehicle’s path.

Projecting Lane Lines from Proxy High-Definition Maps for Automated Vehicle Perception in Road Occlusion Scenarios

Contemporary ADS and ADAS localization technology utilizes real-time perception sensors such as visible light cameras, radar sensors, and lidar sensors, greatly improving transportation safety in sufficiently clear environmental conditions. However, when lane lines are completely occluded, the reliability of on-board automated perception systems breaks down, and vehicle control must be returned to the human driver. This limits the operational design domain of automated vehicles significantly, as occlusion can be caused by shadows, leaves, or snow, which all occur in many regions. High-definition map data, which contains a high level of detail about road features, is an alternative source of the required lane line information. This study details a novel method where high-definition map data are processed to locate fully occluded lane lines, allowing for automated path planning in scenarios where it would otherwise be impossible.

Vehicle Kinematics-Based Image Augmentation against Motion Blur for Object Detectors

High-speed vehicles in low illumination environments severely blur the images used in object detectors, which poses a potential threat to object detector-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving systems. Augmenting the training images for object detectors is an efficient way to mitigate the threat from motion blur. However, little attention has been paid to the motion of the vehicle and the position of objects in the traffic scene, which limits the consistence between the resulting augmented images and traffic scenes. In this paper, we present a vehicle kinematics-based image augmentation algorithm by modeling and analyzing the traffic scenes to generate more realistic augmented images and achieve higher robustness improvement on object detectors against motion blur. Firstly, we propose a traffic scene model considering vehicle motion and the relationship between the vehicle and the object in the traffic scene.

Road Snow Coverage Estimation Using Camera and Weather Infrastructure Sensor Inputs

Modern vehicles use automated driving assistance systems (ADAS) products to automate certain aspects of driving, which improves operational safety. In the U.S. in 2020, 38,824 fatalities occurred due to automotive accidents, and typically about 25% of these are associated with inclement weather. ADAS features have been shown to reduce potential collisions by up to 21%, thus reducing overall accidents. But ADAS typically utilize camera sensors that rely on lane visibility and the absence of obstructions in order to function, rendering them ineffective in inclement weather. To address this research gap, we propose a new technique to estimate snow coverage so that existing and new ADAS features can be used during inclement weather. In this study, we use a single camera sensor and historical weather data to estimate snow coverage on the road. Camera data was collected over 6 miles of arterial roadways in Kalamazoo, MI.

Road Parameter Estimation with Drone-Vehicle Communication

The presented study is dedicated to the technology supporting vehicle state estimation and motion control with a concept drone, which helps the vehicle in sensing the surroundings and driving conditions. This concept allows also extending the functionality of the sensors mounted on the vehicle by replacing or including additional parameter observation channels. The paper discusses the feasibility of such a drone-vehicle interaction as well as demonstrates several design configurations. In this regard, the paper presents a general description of the proposed drone system that assists the vehicle and describes an experiment in measuring the profile of the road with a range sensor. The results obtained in the experiment are described in terms of the accuracy to be achieved using the drone and are compared with other studies, which use the methods of estimation from the sensors mounted on the vehicle.

Research on Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) Based on Fuzzy PID Algorithm

For cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) system, a robust following control algorithm based on fuzzy PID principle is adopted in this paper. Firstly, a nonlinear vehicle dynamics model considering the lag of driving force and acceleration constraints was established. Then, with the vehicle’s control hierarchic, the upper controller takes the relative speed between vehicles and the spacing error as inputs to output the following vehicle's target acceleration, while the lower controller takes the target acceleration as inputs and the throttle opening and brake master cylinder pressure as outputs. For the setting of target spacing, this paper additionally considers the relative speed between vehicles and the acceleration of the front vehicle. Through testing, compared with the traditional variable safety distance model, the average distance reduces by 5.43% when leading vehicle is accelerating, while increases by 2.74% in deceleration.

Utilizing Speed Information Forecast in Energy Optimization of an Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Controller

The efficiency in energy consumption of an electric vehicle (EV) has significant value to both vehicle manufacturers and vehicle owners. Such efficiency will directly impact the cost of energy and vehicle range while relieving the stringent requirements on the DC motor and battery specs. Nowadays, with the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as adaptive cruise control (ACC) or cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), drivers enjoy a much safer driving experience. ADAS capabilities in sensory, computing and communication can be leveraged in EVs for the purpose of optimizing energy consumption. This paper introduces an energy-optimized ACC platform, which utilizes a forecast of the speed profile of the host vehicle in a short (few seconds) horizon. Such speed information can be available through ADAS or similar systems. This paper focuses on optimization in longitudinal tracks.
