Platooning is a key research area where increased focus and interest is shown in order to maximize the transport efficiency of road vehicles. Although the key benefits are projected as increased fuel efficiency especially when it comes to commercial vehicles, allied benefits such as convoy pack efficiency, traffic throughput rate, increased life cycle of components and a source of monetary benefit when using a subscription model are areas which need to be explored. Existing literature points to control strategies predominantly focused on longitudinal control and traffic management in bottlenecks.

The evolution of engine technology has so far seen the most beneficial side of progress in the fields of transportation, agriculture, and mobility. With the advent of innovation, there is also an impact on our environment that needs to be balanced. This is where fuels like CNG, LPG, LNG, etc. outperform conventional fossil fuels in terms of pollution & operational cost. This paper enlightens on the use of innovative dual-fuel technology where diesel & CNG fuels are used for combustion simultaneously inside the combustion chamber. Dual fuel system adaptation for farm application ensures self-reliance of the farmer where he can generate Bio-CNG to use the renewable fuel for farming making him less dependent on conventional fossil fuel thus promoting a green economy. The dual-fuel system is adapted to the existing in-use diesel engine with minimum modifications. This makes it feasible to retrofit a CNG fuel system on an existing diesel engine to operate it on dual fuel mode.

Engine calibration involves the interaction of electronic components with various engine systems like intake system, exhaust system, ignition system, etc. Emissions are the by-products of combustion of fuel and air inside the combustion chamber. After-treatment systems generally take up the responsibility to scrape out harmful emissions from the engines. However, a good engine calibration will focus on emission reduction at source i.e., during the combustion itself. Thus, the intake of air and fuel in proper amount at each engine operating point is crucial for optimized engine performance and minimal emissions. The Intake system is an integral part of any internal combustion engine and it plays an important role to improve its performance and emission. Generally, for a SI engine, maintaining the stoichiometric A/F ratio is a challenging endeavour from an operational standpoint.

EGR Strategies Pertaining to High Pressure and Low Pressure EGR in Heavy Duty CNG Engine to Optimize Exhaust Temperature and NOx Emissions

CNG has proven to be a concrete alternative to gasoline and diesel fuel for sustained mobility. Due to stringent emission norms and sanctions being imposed on diesel fuel vehicles, OEMs have shifted their attention towards natural gas as an efficient and green fuel. Newly implemented BS VI emission norms in India have stressed on the reduction of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) from the exhaust by almost 85% as compared to BS IV emission norms. Also, Indian Automotive market is fuel economy cautious. This challenges to focus on improving fuel economy but without increase in NOx emissions. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has the potential to reduce the NOx emissions by decreasing the in-cylinder temperature. The objective of the paper is to model a CNG TCIC engine using 1D simulation in order to optimize the NOx emissions and maintain exhaust temperatures under failsafe limits.

Development of an all Speed Governed Diesel-CNG Dual Fuel Engine for Farm Applications

This paper discusses the development of an all speed governed diesel-natural gas dual fuel engine for agricultural farm tractor. A 45 hp, 2.9 liters diesel-natural gas dual fuel engine with a novel closed loop secondary fuel injection system was developed. A frugal approach without any modification of the base mechanical diesel fuel injection system was followed. This approach helped to minimize the cost impact, while meeting performance and emissions at par with neat diesel operation. Additional cost on gas injection system is redeemed by cost savings on diesel fuel. The dual fuel technology developed by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., substitutes on an average approximately 40% of diesel with compressed natural gas, meeting the TREM III A emission norms for dual fuel while meeting all application requirements. The governing performance of the tractor was found to be superior than base diesel tractor.

Investigations of Emission Reduction Potential of Diesel-Methanol Blends in a Heavy-Duty Genset Engine

One of the most promising fuel alternatives for Diesel is Methanol. The fuel is regarded advantageous owing to the easy availability of raw materials for its production, its low cost and high Oxygen content that has potential to reduce emissions of smoke, CO and PM. Methanol as a fuel blend with Diesel is non-viable as they are not readily miscible with each other. This paper expounds the engine performance and emission evaluation of blending Methanol with Diesel by using two methods that aid in overcoming phase separation. The experiments were performed in two stages. In the first stage, investigation of phase stabilization of Methanol in Diesel with suitable additive concentration was performed. This was performed to determine the optimum additive and its concentration for a Methanol share of up to 25% in Diesel-Methanol blends for a stabilization period of 30 days.

The trace of rotavator blade is trochoidal path which depends both on tractor forward speed and rotational speed of rotavator. Since this path plays an important role in pulverization, hence pulverization also depends on both factors. In present days system, Rotavator an active tillage implements drawn by tractor is operated by drivers experience and driver set up the speed by throttling the tractor to reach the rated 540 PTO rpm mark in instrumentation cluster. Thus, there is no indication system available to farmer/ Tractor driver to operate the tractor connected rotavator at optimal forward tractor speed and rotational speed of rotavator. Thus, leading to decrease in field quality and performance.

Rotavator is an active tillage implement for breaking the Soil and for the preparation of seed bed for cultivation. The Farmers are currently facing problem due to usage of sub optimal speed of Rotavator which results in more fuel consumption, takes more time for completion of operation. Also, the Current Rental models work on Tractor + Implement as rental combination and customer not able to rent Rotavator as a standalone implement due to non-availability of Tracking information such as hours of utilization on Rotavator. Farmers not able to maintain the service periodicity, if oil change not done in prescribed duration then it may result in improper maintenance and breakdown of the Rotavator. To overcome these problems a smart Rotavator developed consists of an electronic unit fitted on the Rotavator shaft to measure the speed of the shaft rotation and in turn convert to Rotavator speed and also able to convert into Hours of usage based on the starting and stopping of the rotavator.

A Model Based Approach to DPF Soot Estimation and Validation for BSVI Commercial Vehicles in Context to Indian Driving Cycles

With India achieving the BSVI milestone, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has become an imperative component of a modern diesel engine. A DPF system is a device designed to trap soot from exhaust gas of the diesel engine and demands periodic regeneration events to oxidize the accumulated soot particles. The regeneration event is triggered either based on the soot mass limit of the filter or the delta pressure across it. For a Heavy Duty Diesel Engine (HDDE), pressure difference across the DPF is not usually reliable as the size of the DPF is large enough compared to the DPF used ina passenger vehicle diesel engine. Also, the pressure difference across DPF is a function of exhaust mass flow and thus it makes it difficult to make an accurate call for active regeneration. This demands for a very accurate soot estimation model and it plays a vital role in a successful regeneration event.

Optimized Power Utilization of Air Conditioner in Electric City Bus Using

Electric vehicles have a limitation of limited range and long charging time. Energy optimization plays a very crucial role in determining the range of an electric vehicle. The innovative system proposed here gives the opportunity to reduce energy wastage and efficiently direct the electrical energy to improve the driving range of a 9 meter AC electric bus. The high voltage air conditioner unit alone consumes more than 40% of the electrical energy stored in the traction battery which reduces the driving range of the electric bus drastically. The proposed system optimizes the air conditioner utilization to direct cool air only in areas where passengers are present. Buses do not always run on full capacity, when there are less number of people in the bus the system detects the locations of the passengers using sensors and occupant detection algorithm, this enables the controller to identify the areas where cooling has to be focused and where cooling can be reduced or stopped.

Tail Pipe Emission Study of an Aged Exhaust after Treatment System for 3.8 Litre Diesel Engine

With implementation of stringent BSVI emission norms and regulations like OBD-II on vehicle, it is essential to define the life of exhaust after treatment along with the vehicle. Diesel after treatment generally consists of DOC, DPF and SCR. Lubricating oil contains phosphorus and zinc which adversely affect the DOC. Unburned hydrocarbons (UNHBC) and SOF in tail pipe get accumulated in the DPF. This requires regeneration process where in, high temperatures in exhaust after treatment (EATS) burn the adsorbed Sulphur or phosphorus, thereby improving the conversion efficiencies. Repeated regenerations lead to ash accumulation in DPF and this reduces its capability for soot accumulation. Sulphur in the exhaust impacts SCR through NOx conversion. The present study analyzes the effect of (1) Chemical aging (2) Thermal aging on 3.77 liter diesel engine after treatment. A test cycle was prepared to run the durability for EATS.

Diesel engines have always been popular for their low end torque and lugging abilities. With their higher thermal efficiencies through technical advancements, diesel engines are preferred powertrains in mass transportation of goods as well as people [14] [15]. A diesel engine always banks on excess air, which is subjected to higher compression ratios so as to achieve temperatures, enough to facilitate auto-ignition of diesel. With the advent of turbocharging and intercooling, the air availability is further enhanced, ensuring better combustion efficiency, lesser HC, CO and particulate matter (PM) emissions together with improved fuel efficiencies [2] [15]. Higher air availability also has its own shortcomings in the form of higher NOx (Nitrogen oxides) emissions. With stringent emission norms in place, reduction of NOx as well as PM, without sacrificing performance and fuel economy, is of utmost importance.

Minimizing rattle noises is becoming increasingly important for hybrid and electrical vehicles as masking from the internal combustion engine is missing and in view of the functional requirements of the office-like interiors of next generation automated vehicles. Rattle shall therefore be considered in the design phase of component systems. One hurdle is the modelling of the excitation mechanisms and its experimental validation. In this work we focus on excitation by loose parts having functional clearances such as gear systems or ball sensors in safety belt retractors. These parts are excited by relatively large low frequency displacements such as road-induced movements of the car body or low order rigid body engine vibrations generating multiple impacts with broad band frequency content. Direct measurement of the impact forces is in many cases not possible.

The mountainous roads are very complex and changeable. When commercial vehicles are driving in mountain areas, the using of brakes can not only reduce the fuel economy, but also increase the brake wear. The aim of this system is utilizing the terrain changes of mountainous roads to guide the driver to control the accelerator pedal reasonably through the mutual transformation of kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy for reducing the energy loss caused by braking on downhill road. The theoretical control points of releasing the accelerator pedal on the uphill road are determined based on the road digital elevation model (DEM) information and the vehicle dynamic model.

Adopting a low compression ratio (LCR) is a viable approach to meet the stringent emission regulations since it can simultaneously reduce the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions. However, significant shortcomings with the LCR approach include higher unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and fuel economy penalties. Further, poor combustion stability of LCR engines at cold ambient and part load conditions may worsen the transient emission characteristics, which are least explored in the literature. In the present work, the effects of implementing the low compression ratio (LCR) approach in a mass-production light-duty vehicle powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine are investigated with a major focus on transient emission characteristics.

Global emission, rapid exhaustion of oil reserves and stern emissions protocols force us to seek alternative fuels for heavy duty diesel engines. Assessing the influence of Gasoline and JP-8 fuels on the engine performance and gaseous emissions of heavy-duty diesel engines is essential. Multi-fuel strategy program is required for the both, combat vehicles and highways commercial vehicles to optimised the fuel availability. With the Gasoline and JP-8 fueled diesel engine, penalties of fuel economy are well known. Experimental evaluation has confirmed that Gasoline and JP-8 fuels have great potential in reducing NOx emissions. Present study focuses on the effect of engine performance and emission by using Gasoline and JP-8 fuels in heavy duty military engine. NOx and nanoparticles emissions reduction were assessed. EGR is a better technique to reduce NOx.

Analysis of a Gas Engine with Arbitrary Mixture Ratio of H2 and CNG for HDV

To reduce exhaust emissions in commercial vehicles, hydrogen, as a carbon-free fuel, is a reasonable alternative to conventional fuels. In order to circumvent the current problem of hydrogen availability, the use of a gas engine for heavy duty vehicles (HDV), which is able to operate with pure compressed natural gas (CNG), pure hydrogen as well as any mixture of these both gases, is sensible. For this purpose, an operating concept for a gas engine was developed, which is able to operate with an arbitrary hydrogen-natural gas mixture ratio. Therefore, the mixture formation of a hydrogen-natural gas-air mixture was analyzed in a 3D CFD simulation. The results for pure hydrogen and pure CNG operation show a very good homogenization of the fuel distribution at the point of ignition when an outward-opening injector was used.
