Experimentally Validated Neural Networks for Sensors Redundancy Purposes in Spark Ignition Engines

Abstract In the aeronautical field, aircraft reliability is strictly dependent on propulsion systems. Indeed, a reliable propulsion system ensures the safety of pilots and passengers and the possibility of making comfortable flights. Typically, on aircraft equipped with spark ignition (SI) engines, one of the principal requirements to make them reliable is the correct balancing between the intake air mass and fuel flows. Advances in the implementation of sophisticated control and estimation strategies on SI engines allow realizing engines with improved features in terms of performance, reducing pollution emissions, and fuel consumption. Approaches based on sensor redundancy are applied to improve the reliability in measurements of the manifold air pressure (MAP) and flow (MAF) to avoid issues related to possible faults of sensors vital for the correct functioning of SI engines.

Impact of Passive Pre-Chamber Nozzle Diameter on Jet Formation Patterns and Dilution Tolerance in a Constant-Volume Optical Engine

Abstract Pre-chamber jet ignition technologies have been garnering significant interest in the internal combustion engine field, given their potential to deliver shorter burn durations, increased combustion stability, and improved dilution tolerance. However, a clear understanding of the relationship between pre-chamber geometry, operating condition, jet formation, and engine performance in light-duty gasoline injection engines remains under-explored. Moreover, research specifically focusing on high dilution levels and passive pre-chambers with optical accessibility is notably scarce. This study serves to bridge these knowledge gaps by examining the influence of passive pre-chamber nozzle diameter and dilution level on jet formation and engine performance.

Cylinder Liner Velocity Calculation under Dynamic Condition in the Pursuit of Liner Cavitation Investigation of an Internal Combustion Engine

Abstract An analytical method for nonlinear three-dimensional (3D) multi-body flexible dynamic time-domain analysis for a single-cylinder internal combustion (IC) engine consisting of piston, connecting rod, crank pin, and liner is developed. This piston is modeled as a 3D piston that collides with the liner as in a real engine. The goal is to investigate the piston slap force and subsequent liner vibration. Liner vibrational velocity is directly responsible for pressure fluctuations in the coolant region resulting in bubble formation and subsequent collapse. If the bubble collapse is closer to the liner surface, cavitation erosion in the liner might occur. The mechanism of liner cavitation is briefly explained, which would take a full computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to develop, which is out of scope for the present work.

Visualization and Statistical Analysis of Passive Pre-chamber Knock in a Constant-volume Optical Engine

Abstract This study investigates the behavior of pre-chamber knock in comparison to traditional spark ignition engine knock, using a modified constant-volume gasoline engine with an optically accessible piston. The aim is to provide a deeper understanding of pre-chamber knock combustion and its potential for mitigating knock. Five passive pre-chambers with different nozzle diameters, volumes, and nozzle numbers were tested, and nitrogen dilution was varied from 0% to 10%. The stochastic nature of knock behavior necessitates the use of statistical methods, leading to the proposal of a high-frequency band-pass filter (37–43 kHz) as an alternative pre-chamber knock metric. Pre-chamber knock combustion was found to exhibit fewer strong knock cycles compared to SI engines, indicating its potential for mitigating knock intensity. High-speed images revealed pre-chamber knock primarily occurs near the liner, where end-gas knock is typically exhibited.

Machine Learning Tabulation Scheme for Fast Chemical Kinetics Computation

Abstract This study proposes a machine learning tabulation (MLT) method that employs deep neural networks (DNNs) to predict ignition delay and knock propensity in spark ignition (SI) engines. The commonly used Arrhenius model and Livengood–Wu integral for fast knock prediction are not accurate enough to account for residual gas species and may require adjustments or modifications to account for specific engine characteristics. Detailed kinetics modeling is computationally expensive, so the MLT approach is introduced to solve these issues. The MLT method uses precalculated thermochemical states of the mixture that are clustered based on a combustion progress variable. Hundreds of DNNs are trained with the stochastic Levenberg–Marquardt (SLM) optimization algorithm, reducing training time and memory requirements for large-scale problems. MLT has high interpolation accuracy, eliminates the need for table storage, and reduces memory requirements by three orders of magnitude.

Research on the Secondary Motion of Engine Piston Considering the Transport of Lubricating Oil

Abstract At present, it is generally considered in the analysis of the secondary motion of engine piston that the piston skirt–cylinder liner friction pair is fully lubricated in an engine operating cycle. However, in practice, when the piston moves upward, the amount of lubricating oil at the inlet may not ensure that the friction pair is fully lubricated. In this article, the secondary motion of piston is studied when the transport of lubricating oil is considered to determine the lubrication condition of piston skirt–cylinder liner friction pair. The secondary motion of piston is solved based on the combined piston motion model, hydrodynamic lubrication model, asperity contact model, and lubricating oil flow model. The secondary motion equation of piston is solved by the Broyden method. The hydrodynamic lubrication equation is solved by the finite difference method. The asperity contact between piston skirt and cylinder liner is calculated by the Greenwood model.

Development of a Turbulent Jet-Controlled Compression Ignition Engine Concept Using Spray-Guided Stratification for Fueling a Passive Prechamber

Abstract Improving thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce life cycle-based CO2 emissions for transportation. Lean burn technology has the potential to reach high thermal efficiency if simultaneous low NOx, HC, and CO emissions can be achieved. Low NOx can be realized by ultra-lean (λ ≥ 2) spark-ignited combustion; however, the HC and CO emissions can increase due to slow flame propagation and high combustion variability. In this work, we introduce a new combustion concept called turbulent jet-controlled compression ignition, which utilizes multiple turbulent jets to ignite the mixture and subsequently triggers end gas autoignition. As a result, the ultra-lean combustion is further improved with reduced late-cycle combustion duration and enhanced HC and CO oxidation. A low-cost passive prechamber is innovatively fueled using a DI injector in the main combustion chamber through spray-guided stratification.

Modal Analysis of Combustion Chamber Acoustic Resonance to Reduce High-Frequency Combustion Noise in Pre-Chamber Jet Ignition Combustion Engines

Abstract The notable increase in combustion noise in the 7–10 kHz band has become an issue in the development of pre-chamber jet ignition combustion gasoline engines that aim for enhanced thermal efficiency. Combustion noise in such a high-frequency band is often an issue in diesel engine development and is known to be due to resonance in the combustion chamber. However, there are few cases of it becoming a serious issue in gasoline engines, and effective countermeasures have not been established. The authors therefore decided to elucidate the mechanism of high-frequency combustion noise generation specific to this engine, and to investigate effective countermeasures. As the first step, in order to analyze the combustion chamber resonance modes of this engine in detail, calculation analysis using a finite element model and experimental modal analysis using an acoustic excitation speaker were conducted.

Hydrogen Injection Position Impact: Experimental Analysis of Central Direct Injection and Side Direct Injection in Engines

Abstract A detailed investigation was carried out on the performance, combustion, and emissions of a single-cylinder direct injection hydrogen spark ignition (SI) engine with either a side-mounted direct injection (SDI) or a centrally installed direct injection (CDI) injector. The first part of the study analyzed the performance and emissions characteristics of CDI and SDI engine operations with different injection timings and pressures. This was followed by comparing the engine’s performance and emissions of the CDI and SDI operations at different engine speeds and relative air-to-fuel ratios (lambda) with the optimized injection pressure and timings. Furthermore, the performance and emission attributes of the hydrogen engine with the CDI and SDI setups were conducted at a fixed λ value of 2.75 across a broad spectrum of engine loads. The study’s main outcome demonstrates that both direct injection systems produced near-zero CO2, CO, and HC emissions.

Application of a Comprehensive Lagrangian–Eulerian Spark-Ignition Model to Different Operating Conditions

Abstract Increasing engine efficiency is essential to reducing emissions, which is a priority for automakers. Unconventional modes such as boosted and highly dilute operation have the potential to increase engine efficiency but suffer from stability concerns and cyclic variability. To aid engineers in designing ignition systems that reduce cyclic variability in such engine operation modes, reliable and accurate spark-ignition models are necessary. In this article, a Lagrangian–Eulerian spark-ignition (LESI) model is used to simulate electrical discharge, spark channel elongation, and ignition in inert or reacting crossflow within a combustion vessel, at different pressures, flow speeds, and dilution rates. First the model formulation is briefly revisited. Then, the experimental and simulations setups are presented.

Combustion Analysis of Active Pre-Chamber Design for Ultra-Lean Engine Operation

Abstract In this article, the effects of mixture dilution using EGR or excessive air on adiabatic flame temperature, laminar flame speed, and minimum ignition energy are studied to illustrate the fundamental benefits of lean combustion. An ignition system developing a new active pre-chamber (APC) design was assessed, aimed at improving the indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) of a 1.5 L four-cylinder gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. The engine combustion process was simulated with the SAGE detailed chemistry model within the CONVERGE CFD tool, assuming the primary reference fuel (PRF) to be a volumetric mixture of 93% iso-octane and 7% n-heptane. The effects of design parameters, such as APC volume, nozzle diameter, and nozzle orientations, on ITE were studied. It was found that the ignition jet velocity from the pre-chamber to the main chamber had a significant impact on the boundary heat losses and combustion phasing.

Effect of Injector Type and Intake Boosting on Combustion, Performance, and Emission Characteristics of a Spray-Guided Gasoline Direct Injection Engine—A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study

Abstract In general, GDI engines operate with stratified mixtures at part-load conditions enabling increased fuel economy with high power output, however, with a compensation of increased soot emissions at part-load conditions. This is mainly due to improper in-cylinder mixing of air and fuel leading to a sharp decrease in gradient of reactant destruction term and heat release rate (HRR), resulting in flame quenching. The type of fuel injector and engine operating conditions play a significant role in the in-cylinder mixture formation. Therefore, in this study, a CFD analysis is utilized to compare the effect of stratified mixture combustion with multi-hole solid-cone and hollow-cone injectors on the performance and emission characteristics of a spray-guided GDI engine. The equivalence ratio (ϕ) from 0.6 to 0.8 with the constant engine speed of 2000 rev/min is considered. For both injectors, the fuel injection pressure of 200 bar is used with 60° spray-cone angles.

The Hybrid Concept of Turboshaft Engine Enhanced by Steam Cycle Using Waste Heat Recovery—Combined Analytical and Numerical Calculation of Its Efficiency

Abstract The article presents a hybrid concept of a turboshaft engine that fits into the area of PGE (pressure-gained combustion). It combines the advantages and elements of a piston engine and a turbine engine. The combustion takes place in isochoric chambers. The proposed timing system of the engine efficiently realizes the Humphrey cycle. Additionally, the main gas cycle engine was enhanced by the Clausius–Rankine steam cycle to achieve effective power of engine equal to 1231.3 kW. It was supplied by waste heat recovery from the exhaust gas. The enhancement of the engine by the secondary steam cycle significantly improved engine effective efficiency with a final value reaching 0.446. The effective efficiency and specific fuel consumption of the engine were calculated using merged analytical–numerical CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis. The centrifugal compressor, gas turbine, and steam turbine can work on the common shaft whose rotational velocity is 35,000 rpm.

Simulation Studies of Pollutant Emission from Passenger Cars

Abstract The article presents the results of simulation studies of pollutant emissions from passenger cars. The characteristics of emissions were determined using the vehicle driving test procedures, in consideration of differentiated average velocities as well as model traffic conditions: urban traffic jam, urban traffic with no congestion, rural, motorways, and highways. This article also presented the possibility of determining the characteristics of pollutant emission based on a singular realization of the vehicle velocities processes, as well as the intensity of pollutant emission, with the use of the Monte Carlo method. The pollutant emission characteristics enable specification of pollutant emission intensity, which can be used for the inventory of pollutant emissions from road transport (COPERT software applied as standard) and can be useful in the assessment of a degree of environmental hazard by modeling pollutant dispersion.

Optimizing Spark-Ignition Engine Performance with Ternary Blend Fuels and Hybrid Nanolubricants: A Response Surface Methodology Study

Abstract The current research elucidates the application of response surface methodology to optimize the collective impact of methanol–isobutanol–gasoline blends and nanolubricants on the operational parameters of a spark-ignition engine. Diverse alcohol blends in conjunction with gasoline are employed in engine trials at 2500 rpm across varying engine loads. The alcohol blends exhibit notable enhancements in brake thermal efficiency, peak in-cylinder pressure, and heat release rate. At 2500 rpm and 75% load, the break thermal efficiency of iBM15 surpasses that of gasoline by 33.5%. Alcohol blends significantly reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions compared to gasoline. The iBM15 demonstrates a reduction of 25.2% and 51.12% in vibration along the Z and Y axes, respectively, relative to gasoline.

Comparison of Tabulated and Complex Chemistry Approaches for Ammonia–Diesel Dual-Fuel Combustion Simulation

Abstract Using ammonia as a carbon-free fuel is a promising way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. Due to the challenging fuel properties, like high autoignition temperature, high latent heat of vaporization, and low laminar flame speeds, a dual-fuel combustion process is the most promising way to use ammonia as a fuel in medium-speed engines. Currently, many experimental investigations regarding premixed and diffusive combustion are carried out. A numerical approach has been employed to simulate the complex dual-fuel combustion process to better understand the influences on the diffusive combustion of ammonia ignited by a diesel pilot. The simulation results are validated based on optical investigations conducted in a rapid compression–expansion machine (RCEM). The present work compares a tabulated chemistry simulation approach to complex chemistry-based simulations.

Effects of Dimethyl Ether and Propane Blends on Knocking Behavior in a Boosted SI Engine

Abstract Dimethyl ether (DME) is an alternative fuel that, blended with propane, could be an excellent alternative for exploring the use of fuels from renewable sources. DME–propane blends are feasible for their comparable physicochemical properties; these fuels may be pressured as liquids using moderate pressure at ambient temperature. Adding a proportion of DME with a low octane number to a less reactive fuel like propane can improve the combustion process. However, the increased reactivity of the mixture induced by the DME could lead to the early appearance of knocking, and this tendency may even be pronounced in boosted SI engines.

A Diesel Engine Ring Pack Performance Assessment

Abstract Demonstrating ring pack operation in an operating engine is very difficult, yet it is essential to optimize engine performance parameters such as blow-by, oil consumption, emissions, and wear. A significant amount of power is lost in friction between piston ring–cylinder liner interfaces if ring pack parameters are not optimized properly. Thus, along with these parameters, it is also necessary to reduce friction power loss in modern internal combustion engines as the oil film thickness formed between the piston ring and liner is vital for power loss reduction due to friction. Hence, it has also been a topic of research interest for decades. Piston and ring dynamics simulation software are used extensively for a better ring pack design. In this research work, a similar software for piston ring dynamics simulation reviews the ring pack performance of a four-cylinder diesel engine.
