Parametric and Sensitivity Analyses to Support Decision Making Tasks in Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle Design

Nowadays, the need to focus on clean and eco-sustainable mobility is increasingly felt, also considering the more stringent regulations in favor of the ecological transition. A viable solution that is being consolidated is vehicle hybridization. Among different hybrid technologies, a promising one is the fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHV), particularly because this solution is based on hydrogen, a resource foreseen in all the future policies about environmental sustainability. However, FCHVs are still not widespread, mainly due to high costs; thus, their performance enhancing and design optimization are strategic goals to be pursued so as to make them more competitive. This paper presents and discusses the optimization of several FCHV design and control parameters, such as fuel cell system power, battery specific energy, power to weight ratio and final battery state of charge target.

Analysis of the Optimal Operating Strategy of a P24-Hybrid for Different Electric Power Distributions in Charge-Depleting and Charge-Sustaining Operation

In order to adhere with future automotive legislation and incentives, the electric range of plug-in hybrids has steadily increased. At the same time, the installed electric power has risen as well leading to future hybrid vehicles with an electric power share of more than half of overall system power and hybrid configurations with at least two electrical machines come into focus. The concept of adding a separate electrical axle to a P2-hybrid - a so called P24-hybrid, is of special interest. The system complexity of a such a system increases significantly as the number of possible system states increases. Thus, this paper analyzes the efficiencies and benefits of the different system states within the fuel-optimal operating strategy derived by global optimization. By varying the electrical power distribution between the two axles, the impact on fuel efficiency and the changes within the operating strategy are investigated.

Neural Network Design of Control-Oriented Autoignition Model for Spark Assisted Compression Ignition Engines

Substantial fuel economy improvements for light-duty automotive engines demand novel combustion strategies. Low temperature combustion (LTC) demonstrates potential for significant fuel efficiency improvement; however, control complexity is an impediment for real-world transient operation. Spark-assisted compression ignition (SACI) is an LTC strategy that applies a deflagration flame to generate sufficient energy to trigger autoignition in the remaining charge. Operating a practical engine with SACI combustion is a key modeling and control challenge. Current models are not sufficient for control-oriented work such as calibration optimization, transient control strategy development, and real-time control. This work describes the process and results of developing a fast-running control-oriented model for the autoignition phase of SACI combustion. A data-driven model is selected, specifically artificial neural networks (ANNs).

Short-Term Vehicle Speed Prediction Based on Back Propagation Neural Network

In the face of energy and environmental problems, how to improve the economy of fuel cell vehicles (FCV) effectively and develop intelligent algorithms with higher hydrogen-saving potential are the focus and difficulties of current research. Based on the Toyota Mirai FCV, this paper focuses on the short-term speed prediction algorithm based on the back propagation neural network (BP-NN) and carries out the research on the short-term speed prediction algorithm based on BP-NN. The definition of NN and the basic structure of the neural model are introduced briefly, and the training process of BP-NN is expounded in detail through formula derivation. On this basis, the speed prediction model based on BP-NN is proposed. After that, the parameters of the vehicle speed prediction model, the characteristic parameters of the working condition, and the input and output neurons are selected to determine the topology of the vehicle speed prediction model.

Impact of Fuel Consumption Standard on Electrification of Two-Wheelers in India

The two-wheeler market in India is currently dominated by internal combustion engine (ICE) technology, and this vehicle segment is not subject to fuel consumption standards. In this paper, we first assess the technology used in India’s existing two-wheeler fleet. We then estimate the technology potential for improving the fuel efficiency of ICE two-wheelers and the costs associated with doing so and compare the cost-effectiveness of ICE two-wheelers and electric two-wheelers in reducing overall fleet fuel consumption. Our analysis indicates that the ICE vehicles are cost effective till a 23% fuel consumption reduction in 2025. However, if higher fuel consumption reduction is required by 2025, then electric two-wheelers become cost effective. A fleet average of 25 gCO2/km in 2025 can be expected to result in nearly a third of new two-wheelers sold being electric.

Global warming is the driver for introduction of CO2 and fuel consumption legislation worldwide. Indian truck manufacturers are facing the introduction of Indian fuel efficiency norms. In the European Union the CO2 emission monitoring phase of the most relevant truck classes was completed in June 2020 by usage of the Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation TOol VECTO. Indian rule makers are currently considering an adaptation of VECTO for the usage in India, too. Indian truck market has always been very cost sensitive. Introduction of Bharat Stage VI Phase I has already led to a significant cost increase for emission compliance. Therefore, it will be of vital importance to keep the additional product costs for achievement of future fuel consumption legislation as low as possible as long as the real-world operation will not be promoted by the government.

Implementation of Atkinson Effect for Improved Fuel Efficiency of Gasoline Engine Using 1-D Simulation Software and its Validation with Experimental Data

In order to meet the challenges of future CAFE regulations & pollutant emission, vehicle fuel efficiency must be improved upon without compromising vehicle performance. Optimization of engine breathing & its impact on vehicle level fuel economy, performance needs balance between conflicting requirements of vehicle Fuel Economy, performance & drivability. In this study a Port Fuel Injection, naturally aspirated small passenger car gasoline engine was selected which was being used in a typical small passenger car. Simulation approach was used to investigate vehicle fuel economy and performance, where-in 1D CFD Engine model was used to investigate and optimize Valve train events (Intake and exhaust valve open and close timings) for best fuel economy. Engine Simulation software is physics based and uses a phenomenological approach 0-D turbulent combustion model to calculate engine performance parameters. Engine simulation model was calibrated within 95% accuracy of test data.

With the increase in the number of automobiles on road, there is a very strong emphasis on reducing the air pollution which led to evolution of stringent emission norms. To meet these stringent emission norms, the ideal solution is to optimize the engine hardware and the combustion system to reduce the emission at source thereby reducing the dependency on exhaust after treatment system. Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines are gaining popularity worldwide as they provide a balance between fun to drive and fuel efficiency. Controlling the particle emissions especially Particle Number (PN) is a challenge in GDI engines due to the nature of its combustion system. In this study, experiments were performed on a 1.2Litre 3-cylinder 250bar GDI engine to capture the effect of injection strategies on PN.

The evolution of engine technology has so far seen the most beneficial side of progress in the fields of transportation, agriculture, and mobility. With the advent of innovation, there is also an impact on our environment that needs to be balanced. This is where fuels like CNG, LPG, LNG, etc. outperform conventional fossil fuels in terms of pollution & operational cost. This paper enlightens on the use of innovative dual-fuel technology where diesel & CNG fuels are used for combustion simultaneously inside the combustion chamber. Dual fuel system adaptation for farm application ensures self-reliance of the farmer where he can generate Bio-CNG to use the renewable fuel for farming making him less dependent on conventional fossil fuel thus promoting a green economy. The dual-fuel system is adapted to the existing in-use diesel engine with minimum modifications. This makes it feasible to retrofit a CNG fuel system on an existing diesel engine to operate it on dual fuel mode.

In last few years there has been great research to increase safety of on-road vehicles by providing information of various vehicle parameters to the user/driver while driving on road. Many algorithms have been developed to assess the vehicle run time situations and enable vehicle ECU to take decisions for autonomous driving. These algorithms are derived using data captured from sensors predominantly make use of vehicle dynamic information. The design proposed in this paper discusses capturing of two important and critical vehicle run time parameters i.) Vehicle tire pressure and the ii.) Road gradient. These parameters then help us in determining the effective fuel efficiency of the vehicle and approximate distance that user can drive with the amount of fuel remaining in the tank.

EGR Strategies Pertaining to High Pressure and Low Pressure EGR in Heavy Duty CNG Engine to Optimize Exhaust Temperature and NOx Emissions

CNG has proven to be a concrete alternative to gasoline and diesel fuel for sustained mobility. Due to stringent emission norms and sanctions being imposed on diesel fuel vehicles, OEMs have shifted their attention towards natural gas as an efficient and green fuel. Newly implemented BS VI emission norms in India have stressed on the reduction of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) from the exhaust by almost 85% as compared to BS IV emission norms. Also, Indian Automotive market is fuel economy cautious. This challenges to focus on improving fuel economy but without increase in NOx emissions. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has the potential to reduce the NOx emissions by decreasing the in-cylinder temperature. The objective of the paper is to model a CNG TCIC engine using 1D simulation in order to optimize the NOx emissions and maintain exhaust temperatures under failsafe limits.

The current simulation models of EV and ICE Vehicles are well known in industry for their use in estimating the fuel economy or Range benefits because of controller calibrations and component sizing. However, there is a gap in understanding the behavior of accessories such as HVAC, power steering and other such auxiliary loads and the energy losses associated with them. Impact of thermal behavior of electronics on vehicle range also needs to be studied in detail. These kinds of studies help OEM and tier 1 manufactures in improving their design concepts significantly with minimum cost and development time. Hence, the focus of this study is on building simulation models of thermal, electrical, traction and control circuits of a typical electric vehicle. These models are then integrated, and analysis is performed to understand vehicle system level performance metrics.

Coastdown Road Load Coefficients of Passenger Vehicles - Variation Analysis and its Correlation with Temperature

Road Load parameters (rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag) of a vehicle have strong impact on overall Vehicle Emissions and Fuel Economy. The road load coefficients are simulated on chassis dynamometer to carryout emission and fuel economy measurement and are hence required to be found beforehand. A realistic measure of road load parameters can be obtained by conducting a coastdown test. Coastdown test results are hugely impacted by various environmental parameters like ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed etc. Though performed in standard boundary conditions, results of multiple tests performed on a vehicle vary from one another due to variations in the mentioned environmental parameters over and above standard test to test variation. This paper aims at studying the variation in test results due to ambient temperature as one of the parameters responsible.

The mountainous roads are very complex and changeable. When commercial vehicles are driving in mountain areas, the using of brakes can not only reduce the fuel economy, but also increase the brake wear. The aim of this system is utilizing the terrain changes of mountainous roads to guide the driver to control the accelerator pedal reasonably through the mutual transformation of kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy for reducing the energy loss caused by braking on downhill road. The theoretical control points of releasing the accelerator pedal on the uphill road are determined based on the road digital elevation model (DEM) information and the vehicle dynamic model.

Effects of Partial Oxidation in an Unburned Mixture on a Flame Stretch under EGR Conditions

The purpose of the present study is to find a way to extend a combustion stability limit for diluted combustion in a spark-ignition (SI) gasoline engine which has a high compression ratio. This paper focuses on partial oxidation in an unburned mixture which is observed in the high compression engine and clarifies the effect of partial oxidation in an unburned mixture on the behavior of a flame stretch and the extinction limit. The behavior of the flame stretch was simulated using the detailed chemical kinetics simulation with the opposed-flow flame reactor model. In the simulation, the reactants which have various reaction progress variables were examined to simulate the flame stretch and extinction under the partial oxidation conditions. The mixtures were also diluted by complete combustion products which represent exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

Transient Emission Characteristics of a Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Powered by a Low Compression Ratio Diesel Engine

Adopting a low compression ratio (LCR) is a viable approach to meet the stringent emission regulations since it can simultaneously reduce the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions. However, significant shortcomings with the LCR approach include higher unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and fuel economy penalties. Further, poor combustion stability of LCR engines at cold ambient and part load conditions may worsen the transient emission characteristics, which are least explored in the literature. In the present work, the effects of implementing the low compression ratio (LCR) approach in a mass-production light-duty vehicle powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine are investigated with a major focus on transient emission characteristics.

Global emission, rapid exhaustion of oil reserves and stern emissions protocols force us to seek alternative fuels for heavy duty diesel engines. Assessing the influence of Gasoline and JP-8 fuels on the engine performance and gaseous emissions of heavy-duty diesel engines is essential. Multi-fuel strategy program is required for the both, combat vehicles and highways commercial vehicles to optimised the fuel availability. With the Gasoline and JP-8 fueled diesel engine, penalties of fuel economy are well known. Experimental evaluation has confirmed that Gasoline and JP-8 fuels have great potential in reducing NOx emissions. Present study focuses on the effect of engine performance and emission by using Gasoline and JP-8 fuels in heavy duty military engine. NOx and nanoparticles emissions reduction were assessed. EGR is a better technique to reduce NOx.
