Lithium ion batteries (LIB) are used in pure electric and all kinds of hybrid electric vehicles, comprising all classes of passenger cars up to heavy duty applications. Different applications and operating conditions call for tailored battery systems featuring individually optimized energy, power and lifetime characteristics. Innovative development techniques are key to efficiently tackle all different design targets and to master the broad variety of design options. They reach from the selection of the right cell chemistry and cell type to the calibration of battery management systems. The application of LiFePO4 (LFP) graphite electrodes turned out to be one promising cell chemistry as especially the cathode shows high performance, good thermal stability and durability for the sake of low electric conductivity and lithium diffusivity. Virtual twins of battery packs are heavily explored in mobility industry to accelerate design decisions.
