CAE Transfer Path Analysis and Its Accuracy Evaluation Using a Validation Method

In-cabin Noise at low frequency (due to engine or road excitation) is a major issue for NVH engineers. Usually, noise transfer function (NTF) analysis is carried out, due to absence of accurate actual loads for sound pressure level (SPL) analysis. But NTF analysis comes with the challenge of having too many paths (~20 trimmed body attachment locations: engine and suspension mounts, along with 3 directions for each) to work on, which is cumbersome. Physical test transfer path analysis (TPA) is a process of root cause analysis, by which critical contributing paths can be obtained for a problem peak frequency. In addition to that, loads at the attachment points of trimmed body of test vehicle can be derived. Both these outputs are conventionally used in CAE analysis to work on either NTF or SPL. The drawback of this conventional approach is that the critical bands and paths suggested are based on the problem peak frequency of test vehicle which may be different in CAE.

Road Simulation Techniques for Reproducing Vehicle Behavior at Motocross Running on a Track

A Road Simulator was developed with the aim of reproducing actual vehicle behavior while running on motocross (MX) track in a laboratory. Vehicle behavior while running on an MX track is influenced by various inertial forces, such as jump landing, acceleration at full throttle, reduced speed at full braking and so on, and also load input from the rider to handlebars and footrests. As all influences must be considered, these inertial force and external force should be applied to a vehicle in laboratory tests. To reproduce various inertial forces such as falling inertia at jump landing, longitudinal inertia during acceleration or deceleration, and rider body action on the vehicle, Active restraint systems must be added instead of the traditional method of Road Simulator that controls wheel axle’s vertical and longitudinal directions with actuators.

Analysis of Cooling and Warm-Up Performance of Oil-Cooled Engine with Fin-Shaped Oil Jacket

An oil-cooled engine has been developing to achieve better warm-up performance. The oil-cooled engine has an oil jacket that pass through around the exhaust port and the cylinder liner. Fins were installed inside the oil jacket to enhance cooling performance. The result of a bench test shows that the fins enhance the cooling performance with slight loss of warm-up performance. The aim of this study is to clarify effects of the fins. This study conducted two simulations. One is a cooling simulation that was conducted to clarify the reason why the fins enhanced the cooling performance. The other is a warm-up simulation that was conducted to clarify the reason why the fins almost maintained the warm-up performance. The cooling simulation was conducted by steady flow simulation. It simulated a full-load operation of the bench test. It compared converged temperature between the engines with/without the fins. The warm-up simulation was conducted by unsteady flow simulation.

Effects of In-Cylinder Flow and Stratified Mixture on HCCI Combustion in High Load

The purpose of this paper is to find a way to extend the high load limit of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion. This paper presents the effect of in-cylinder flow and stratified mixture on HCCI combustion by experiments and three-dimensional computer fluid dynamics coupled with a detailed chemical reaction calculation. The first study was conducted using a rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM) equipped with a flow generation plate to create in-cylinder turbulent flow and with a control unit of in-cylinder wall temperature to create in-cylinder temperature distribution. The study assesses the effect of the turbulent flow and the temperature distribution on HCCI combustion. In the second study, the numerical simulation of HCCI combustion was conducted using large eddy simulation coupled with a detailed chemical reaction calculation. The study analyzes the interaction between in-cylinder turbulent flow and mixture distribution and HCCI combustion.

A Theoretical Study of Interaction between Platinum and Oxide Support for Exhaust-Gas Purification Catalyst

We investigated the interaction between the platinum and oxide support based on the HSAB (Hard-Soft-Acid-Base) concept to obtain guidelines for a superior exhaust-gas purification catalyst. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation provided the chemical potential (μ) and chemical hardness (η) via the eigenvalue of the Valence Band Maximum and Conduction Band Minimum. Moreover, it was found that the interaction depends on the μ and η, e.g., the metallic Pt cluster (Pt1, Pt3) had a greater interaction with the oxide supports having a lower η, on the other hand, the oxidized Pt cluster (Pt1O1, Pt1O2, Pt1O3, Pt1O4, Pt3O6) tends to be stabilized on the oxide support with a higher μ. These results could be explained by the HSAB concept. It was also found that the oxidation energy of the supported Pt cluster well corresponds to the actual valency of the supported Pt, furthermore, the particle size of the Pt after the thermal treatment depends on the μ of the oxide supports.

Weight Reduction of Connecting Rod by Using High Strength Steel

Recently, further weight reduction of the car components are demanded for the purpose of fuel-efficient. In particular, the weight reduction of moving parts such as the connecting rod is indispensable for the weight reduction of neighboring parts. The lightweight connecting rod can be accomplished by decrease in cross section of rod part by using high strength steel. However, conventional high strength steel has bad machinability. Therefore, we developed a new high strength steel for connecting rod. The developed steel is based on middle carbon microalloyed steel, and vanadium content is increased to obtain the high yield ratio. As a result, strength of developed steel is 10% higher than the conventional steel. And a weight of new connecting rod can be reduced 8% by using developed steel. This connecting rod had been mass-produced for automobile engine from 2013.

Study of Supercharged Gasoline HCCI Combustion by Using Spectroscopic Measurements and FT-IR Exhaust Gas Analysis

One issue of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines that should be addressed is to suppress rapid combustion in the high-load region. Supercharging the intake air so as to form a leaner mixture is one way of moderating HCCI combustion. However, the specific effect of supercharging on moderating HCCI combustion and the mechanism involved are not fully understood yet. Therefore, experiments were conducted in this study that were designed to moderate rapid combustion in a test HCCI engine by supercharging the air inducted into the cylinder. The engine was operated under high-load levels in a supercharged state in order to make clear the effect of supercharging on expanding the stable operating region in the high-load range. HCCI combustion was investigated under these conditions by making in-cylinder spectroscopic measurements and by analyzing the exhaust gas using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy.

Study of Bolt Model to Improve Accuracy of Engine Vibration Analysis

To improve the accuracy of engine vibration analysis, the bolt model which fastens an engine head and an engine block had been developed. In the conventional method of engine vibration analysis, the bolt was modeled with a rigid bar. However, it is seen that the power plant rigidity becomes higher in proportion to the rigid bar bolt length. So, to precisely predict the vibration property of engine parts, the elastic deformation of the bolt was considered in this paper. It is known that the parameters, which are Young's modulus, the length of bolts, the distance between bolts, the area of contact plane, the tightening torque and so on, have a great influence on the performance of the engine vibration model. This paper describes a study of FE bolt model to correlate eigenvalue and mode shapes with the test result. The effects of following parameters were investigated: 1) Bolt model with elastic material 2) Rigidity of bolted-connection in tightening plane.

Thermal-Mechanical Durability of DOC and DPF After-treatment System for Light Heavy Pickup Truck Application

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s heavy duty diesel emission standard was tightened beginning from 2007 with the introduction of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel. Most heavy duty diesel applications were required to equip Particulate Matter (PM) after-treatment systems to meet the new tighter, emission standard. Systems utilizing Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Catalyzed-Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) are a mainstream of modern diesel PM after-treatment systems. To ensure appropriate performance of the system, periodic cleaning of the PM trapped in DPF by its oxidation (a process called “regeneration”) is necessary. As a result, of this regeneration, DOC’s and DPF’s can be exposed to hundreds of thermal cycles during their lifetime. Therefore, to understand the thermo-mechanical performance of the DOC and DPF is an essential issue to evaluate the durability of the system.

Application of Hydraulic Body Mounts to Reduce the Freeway Hop Shake of Pickup Trucks

When pickup trucks are driven on concrete paved freeways, freeway hop shake is a major complaint. Freeway hop shake occurs when the vehicle passes over the concrete joints of the freeway which impose in-phase harmonic road inputs. These road inputs excite vehicle modes that degrade ride comfort. The worst shake level occurs when the vehicle speed is such that the road input excites the vehicle 1st bending mode and/or the rear wheel hop mode. The hop and bending mode are very close in frequency. This phenomenon is called freeway hop shake. Automotive manufacturers are searching for ways to mitigate freeway hop shake. There are several ways to reduce the shake amplitude. This paper documents a new approach using hydraulic body mounts to reduce the shake. A full vehicle analytical model was used to determine the root cause of the freeway hop shake.

Observer Design for Fuel Reforming in HCCI Engines Using a UEGO Sensor

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion shows a high potential of reducing both fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions. Many works have been devoted to extend the HCCI operation range in order to maximize its fuel economy benefit. Among them, fuel injection strategies that use fuel reforming to increase the cylinder charge temperature to facilitate HCCI combustion at low engine loads have been proposed. However, to estimate and control an optimal amount of fuel reforming in the cylinder of an HCCI engine proves to be challenging because the fuel reforming process depends on many engine variables. It is conceivable that the amount of fuel reforming can be estimated since it correlates with the combustion phasing which in turn can be measured using a cylinder pressure sensor.

Concept and Implementation of a Robust HCCI Engine Controller

General Motors recently demonstrated two driveable test vehicles powered by a Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine. HCCI combustion has the potential of a significant fuel economy benefit with reduced after-treatment cost. However, the biggest challenge of realizing HCCI in vehicle applications is controlling the combustion process. Without a direct trigger mechanism for HCCI's flameless combustion, the in-cylinder mixture composition and temperature must be tightly controlled in order to achieve robust HCCI combustion. The control architecture and strategy that was implemented in the demo vehicles is presented in this paper. Both demo vehicles, one with automatic transmission and the other one with manual transmission, are powered by a 2.2-liter HCCI engine that features a central direct-injection system, variable valve lift on both intake and exhaust valves, dual electric camshaft phasers and individual cylinder pressure transducers.

Application of Model-Based Design Techniques for the Control Development and Optimization of a Hybrid-Electric Vehicle

Model-based design is a collection of practices in which a system model is at the center of the development process, from requirements definition and system design to implementation and testing. This approach provides a number of benefits such as reducing development time and cost, improving product quality, and generating a more reliable final product through the use of computer models for system verification and testing. Model-based design is particularly useful in automotive control applications where ease of calibration and reliability are critical parameters. A novel application of the model-based design approach is demonstrated by The Ohio State University (OSU) student team as part of the Challenge X advanced vehicle development competition. In 2008, the team participated in the final year of the competition with a highly refined hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) that uses a through-the-road parallel architecture.

Opportunities and Challenges for Blended 2-Way SCR/DPF Aftertreatment Technologies

Diesel engines offer better fuel economy compared to their gasoline counterpart, but simultaneous control of NOx and particulates is very challenging. The blended 2-way SCR/DPF is recently emerging as a compact and cost-effective technology to reduce NOx and particulates from diesel exhaust using a single aftertreatment device. By coating SCR catalysts on and inside the walls of the conventional wall-flow filter, the 2-way SCR/DPF eliminates the volume and mass of the conventional SCR device. Compared with the conventional diesel aftertreatment system with a SCR and a DPF, the 2-way SCR/DPF technology offers the potential of significant cost saving and packaging flexibility. In this study, an engine dynamometer test cell was set up to repeatedly load and regenerate the SCR/DPF devices to mimic catalyst aging experienced during periodic high-temperature soot regenerations in the real world.

Using a Co-simulation Framework to Enable Software-in-the-Loop Powertrain System Development

The Advanced Engineering (AE) group within General Motors Powertrain (GMPT) develops next generation engines and transmissions for automotive and marine products. As a research organization, AE needs to prototype design ideas quickly and inexpensively. To this end, AE has embraced model-based development techniques and is currently investigating the benefits of software in-the-loop (SIL) testing. The underlying obstacle faced in developing a practical SIL system lays in the ability to integrate a plant model with sufficient fidelity together with target application software. ChiasTek worked with AE utilizing their CosiMate tool chain to eliminate these barriers and delivered a flexible SIL system simulation solution.

Exhaust Backpressure Estimation for an Internal Combustion Engine with a Variable Geometry Turbo Charger

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is one of the key approaches applied to reduce emissions for an internal combustion engine. Recirculating a desired amount of EGR requires accurately estimating EGR mass flow. This can be calculated either from the gas flow equation of an orifice, or from the difference between charge air mass flow and fresh air mass flow. Both calculations need engine exhaust pressure as an input variable. This paper presents a method to estimate exhaust pressure for a variable geometry turbo charged diesel engine. The method is accurate and simple to fit production ECU application, therefore, saves cost of using a physical sensor.

Closed Loop Pressure Control System Development for an Automatic Transmission

This paper presents the development of a transmission closed loop pressure control system. The objective of this system is to improve transmission pressure control accuracy by employing closed-loop technology. The control system design includes both feed forward and feedback control. The feed forward control algorithm continuously learns solenoid P-I characteristics. The closed loop feedback control has a conventional PID control with multi-level gain selections for each control channel, as well as different operating points. To further improve the system performance, Robust Optimization is carried out to determine the optimal set of control parameters and controller hardware design factors. The optimized design is verified via an L18 experiment on spin dynamometer. The design is also tested on vehicle.

Shudder Durability of a Wet Launch Clutch Part I – Thermal Study and Development of Durability Test Profile

Under the initiative of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR§) Transmission Working Group, a collaborative effort was made with LuK USA LLC to study the influence of the friction interface parameters on the shudder durability of a wet launch clutch. A test bench was designed. Clutch configurations with different combinations of four friction materials (A, B, C and D), three groove patterns (waffle, radial and waffle–parallel) and two separator plate conditions (nitrided and non–nitrided) were considered. Considerable improvement in performance was seen by changing from CVT fluid* to DCT fluid*. A thermal analysis based on thermal model predictions and measurement correlations was conducted. Comparisons of clutch configurations with four and five friction plates were done. The waffle and radial groove pattern showed better heat transfer than the waffle–parallel groove pattern.

Shudder Durability of a Wet Launch Clutch Part II - Durability Study

Under the initiative of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR§) Transmission Working Group, a collaborative effort was made with LuK USA LLC to study the influence of the friction interface parameters on the shudder durability of a wet launch clutch. Clutch configurations with different combinations of four friction materials (A, B, C and D), three groove patterns (waffle, radial and waffle-parallel) and two separator plate conditions (nitrided and non-nitrided) were considered. Durability testing consisted of a test profile, with 110 kJ energy per test cycle, developed earlier in this project. Materials A, B and C with nitrided separator plates reached the end of test criteria for the torque gradient and showed shudder. Materials B and C were more wear resistant as compared to materials A and D. The loss of friction coefficient (μ) was lower for materials B, C and D as compared to material A.

Development of a Motorcycle Engine with a Three-dimensional Cam for Continuous Variable Valve Lift and Timing Mechanism

From the viewpoint of protection of the global environment, reduction of CO2 emissions are high-priority issues for vehicles, along with the demand for increased power performance. One of the more popular technological developments that can help to resolve such incompatible characteristics is the variable valve lift mechanism. Among them, the three-dimensional cam for continuous variable valve lift and timing mechanism has been developed as a technology applicable to motorcycles, because of its small, compact layout and capability of running under high speed engine conditions. The 3-D cam is provided with numerous cam profiles set in an orderly manner and forming a three dimensional map and at points making contact with a spherical roller tappet. An accelerator actuator slides the cam along the camshaft to continuously vary the power output from idling to maximum.
