Experimental Study on Diesel Spray Combustion and Wall Heat Transfer with Multiple Fuel Injection Strategies - Results of Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine Experiment

The rapid compression expansion machine (RCEM) was used to investigate the temporal variations of the spray flame and wall heat flux in the diesel engine combustion process by using 120 MPa and 180 MPa common rail pressure. A stepped cavity was applied to investigate spray and flame behavior under the pilot, pre and main multiple injection strategy. Wall heat flux sensors were installed in the piston cavity and the cylinder side. The injector has 3 holes with the neighboring angle in the left direction and another 3 holes in the right direction to simulate the spray interaction in the 10-hole injector combustion system in the actual diesel engine. The spray and flame behavior were taken by a high-speed video camera with direct photograph. A two-color analysis was applied to investigate gas temperature and KL factor distribution. The effect of locations and common rail pressure on heat transfer was investigated.

Effects of Different Driving Behavior during Actual Road Driving on Ammonia Emissions from Gasoline Vehicles

Three-way catalysts are used in gasoline vehicles for simultaneous purifying nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbon in recent years. However, the reduction of ammonia emission generated in the three-way catalyst is pressing issue. In EURO 7, ammonia will also be subject to the Real Driving Emissions regulation, and its emissions must be reduced. Previous studies have shown that ammonia emissions are higher under fuel-rich conditions, suggesting that differences in driving behavior have a significant impact on ammonia emissions in real-world driving, which includes various driving environments. In this study, driving tests were conducted on a direct- injection gasoline vehicle equipped with a three-way catalyst and Portable Emission Measurement System and Sensor-based Emission Measurement System to investigate the actual ammonia emissions on actual roads.

Infrared High-Speed Thermography of Combustion Chamber Wall Impinged by Diesel Spray Flame

As a new method to examine the extremely unsteady and spatially varying wall heat transfer phenomena on diesel engine combustion chamber wall, high-speed imaging of infrared thermal radiation from the chromium coated window surface impinged by a diesel spray flame has been conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber. The infrared radiation from a back surface of the chromium layer was successfully visualized at 10kHz frame rate and 128 × 128 pixel resolution through the window. The distributions of infrared radiation, temperature and heat flux exhibited coherent and streaky structure with radial stripes extending and waving from a stagnation point likely reflecting the near-wall turbulent structure in a wall impinging diesel flame. The experiments were conducted with various parameters such as fuel injection pressure, ambient gas oxygen concentration, wall impinging distance, wall surface roughness and wall materials.

A study of Multi-Functional Membrane Filters made of Fine Catalyst Particles

A multi-functional membrane filter was developed through deposition of agglomerated Three-Way Catalyst particles with a size of 1 ~ 2 microns on the conventional bare particulate filter. The filtration efficiency reaches almost 100 % from the beginning of soot trapping with a low pressure drop and both reductions of NO and CO emission were achieved.

Real World Emissions Analysis Using Sensor-based Emissions Measurement System for Light-duty Direct-Injection Gasoline Vehicle

In recent years, particulate matter (PM) emitted from direct-injection gasoline vehicles is becoming an increasingly concerning problem. In addition, it is often reported that ammonia (NH3) is emitted from gasoline vehicles equipped with a three-way catalyst. These emissions might be largely emitted especially when driving in on-road driving conditions. In this study, we investigated the emissions, NOx, NH3, and PM/PN (particulate number) of a light-duty direct-injection gasoline vehicle when driving on actual roads. Using a small direct-injection gasoline vehicle equipped with a three-way catalyst, experiment was conducted 8 times on the same route, and these emissions were measured. In this study, vehicle specific power (VSP) was introduced, which can be calculated using vehicle parameters, vehicle speed, and road gradient. The effects of parameters acquired through on-board diagnostics (OBD) port and VSP on emissions were investigated.

Vortex Development and Heat Release Enhancement in Diesel Spray Flame by Inversed-Delta Injection Rate Shaping Using TAIZAC Injector

The enhancement of vortex development, fuel-air mixing and heat release in diesel spray flame by inversed-delta injection rate shaping, having been predicted via LES simulation with detailed chemical kinetics, is experimentally confirmed for the first time. Newly developed 3-injector TAIZAC (TAndem Injector Zapping ACtivation) injector realizing aggressive inversed-delta injection rate shaping was used for single-shot combustion experiments in a constant volume combustion vessel. Simultaneous high-speed (120,000fps) and high-resolution (1,280 x 704 pixels) laser schlieren and UV OH* chemiluminescence imaging combined with subsequent Flame Imaging Velocimetry (FIV) analysis was employed to elucidate the correlation between vortex development and enhanced heat release.

Investigation on Effect of Offset Orifice Nozzle on Diesel Combustion Characteristics

Compression ignition engines provide superior thermal efficiency over other internal combustion engines. Unfortunately the combustion process is diffusive combustion, meaning a lot of fuel is impinged the on the piston and cylinder wall. This creates cooling loss coupled with smoke, CO and THC. Minimization of the nozzle orifice diameter is a simple method widely used to shorten spray penetration. However, decreasing the nozzle orifice diameter also decreases fuel flow rate resulting in a prolonged injection and combustion process and reducing thermal efficiency. An offset orifice nozzle causes less fuel impingement by shorter fuel spray penetration without significant reduction of fuel flow rate. The offset orifice nozzle was made by shifting its alignment from the center of the sac to the edge of the sac following the swirl direction. A counterbore design was applied to maintain constant orifice length.

Every year, exhaust gas regulations are getting stricter with the intention to solve the average air pollution problem, however, local roadside pollution is still a pressing issue. In order to solve this local roadside pollution problem, it is necessary to evaluate and/or predict “where” and “how much” pollutants such as NOx are emitted. To predict the local roadside pollution, it is necessary to collect emissions data from various kinds of vehicles driving on real-world and analyze them. In recent years, Real Driving Emission regulations using PEMS (Portable Emission Measurement System) have been introduced mainly in Europe. A typical PEMS configuration can weigh close to 100 kg however, and its weight affects the driving conditions of vehicles running on actual roads. In this study, we focused on the analysis of real-world emissions using SEMS (Sensor-based Emission Measurement System).

Combustion Characteristic of Offset Orifice Nozzle under Multi Pulse Ultrahigh Pressure Injection and PCCI Combustion Conditions

CI engines provide higher thermal efficiency compared to other internal combustion engines. On the other hand large amounts of smoke and NOx are produced during combustion. Smoke and NOx can be reduced by applying Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) combustion. Unfortunately, the problems of PCCI combustion include unstable start of combustion and limited operating range. The multi-pulse ultrahigh pressure injection allows fuel to control PCCI combustion. The objective of offset orifice nozzle is to improve mixture formation and shorten spray penetration in order to increase thermal efficiency and control PCCI combustion. The offset orifice nozzle was designed by shift orifice aliment from into the sac center to edge of sac follow swirl direction. Counter bore design was applied to offset orifice nozzle in order to keep the constant orifice length as standard nozzle.

Effect of exhaust gas composition on EGR deposit formation

Serious problems occur in an exhaust gas recirculation system due to an adhesive hard deposit. It is important to clarify the mechanism of the hard deposit formation to suppress it. In this study, the effect of exhaust gas composition on hard deposit formation was investigated. The amount of the hard deposit formed under various operating conditions while keeping the total hydrocarbon concentration constant was different. The component analyses of the exhaust gas and the hard deposit clarified that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas strongly affected the hard deposit formation.

Impact of Engine Oil Additives on Nanostructure and Oxidation Kinetics of Diesel and Synthetic Biodiesel Particulate Matters using Electron Microscopy

Physicochemical characteristics of particulate matters which are influenced by engine oil additives from engine combustion of diesel and synthetic biodiesel: hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) were successfully investigated using electron microscopy, electron dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The agglomerate structure of diesel PM, HVO PM and diesel blending lubricant PM are similar in micro-scales. However, nanostructure of soot is a spherical shape composed of curve line crystallites while the metal oxide ash nanostructure is composed of parallel straight line hatch patterns. The oxidation kinetics of fuel blending lubricant PMs are higher than neat fuel PMs due to catalytic effect of incombustible metal additives from engine lubricating oil.

Investigation on Premixed Charge Compression Ignition Combustion Control Using Multi Pulse Ultrahigh Pressure Injection

Compression ignition (CI) engines provide higher thermal efficiency compared to other internal combustion engines although large amounts of NOx and soot are produced during combustion. NOx and soot emissions can be reduced by using Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) combustion. However, the problems of PCCI combustion include limited operating range, unstable start of combustion and an increase in combustion noise. The multi-pulse ultrahigh pressure injection allows fuel to be injected near TDC, improving mixture formation and enhancing the possibility to extend the operating range of PCCI combustion. The objective of this paper is to control and extend the operating range of PCCI combustion using multi-pulse ultrahigh pressure injection. This has not been studied before. Combustion characteristics were investigated using apparent rate of heat release analysis, heat balance analysis, exhaust emission measurement and soot concentration measurement.

A Cycle-to-Cycle Variation Extraction Method for Flow Field Analysis in SI IC Engines Based on Turbulence Scales

To adhere to stringent environmental regulations, SI (spark ignition) engines are required to achieve higher thermal efficiency. In recent years, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) systems and lean-burn operation has been recognized as key technologies. Under such operating conditions, reducing CCV (cycle-to-cycle variation) in combustion is critical to the enhancement of overall engine performance. Flow-field CCV is one of the considerable factors affecting combustion in engines. Conventionally, in research on flow fields in SI engines, the ensemble average is used to separate the measured velocity field into a mean component and a fluctuation component, the latter of which contains a CCV component and a turbulent component. To extract the CCV of the flow field, previous studies employed spatial filter, temporal filter, and POD (proper orthogonal decomposition) methods.

In-Cylinder GDI Soot via Visualization and Time-Resolved Total Cylinder Sampling

For better understanding, model development and its validation of in-cylinder soot formation processes of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines, crank-angle-resolved mass and size distribution of in-cylinder soot during a GDI combustion cycle were investigated via optical measurements and total cylinder sampling technique in an optically accessible Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine (RCEM). A direct-injection, spark-ignited and single-shot combustion event was achieved in the RCEM operated with engine speed 600 rpm, compression ratio 9.0, equivalence ratio 0.9 and natural aspiration. A three-component (iso-octane 65%, n-heptane 10%, toluene 25%) gasoline surrogate fuel and a multi-hole injector shared within the Japanese SIP Innovative Combustion Technology research program were used.

A Numerical Study on Correlation of Chemiluminescent Species and Heat Release Distributions Using Large Eddy Simulation

A mixed timescale subgrid model of a large eddy simulation was used to simulate the turbulence regime in diesel engine combustion. The combustion model used the direct integration approach with a diesel oil surrogate mechanism (developed at Chalmers University of Technology and consisting of 70 species and 309 reactions). Additional reactions for the generation and consumption of OH*, CO2*, and CH* species were added from recent kinetic studies. Collisional quenching and spontaneous emission resulted in de-excitation of the excited state radical. A phenomenological soot formation model (developed at Waseda University) was combined with the LES code. The following important steps were considered in the soot model: particle inception where naphthalene grows irreversibly to form soot, surface growth with the addition of C2H2, surface oxidation (induced by OH radicals and O2 attack), and particle coagulation.

Optical Diagnostics of Inversed-Delta Rate Shaping Diesel Spray Flame towards Reduction of Late Combustion

In our previous work, diesel late combustion heat release is suspected to originate from rich fuel mixture cloud stagnating at the spray tip. Injection rate shaping is gaining attention as an attractive strategy to control diesel spray combustion characteristics where it could be an effective approach in reducing the late combustion. Progressive ramp-down injection rate as in “inversed-delta” shape is achieved by using a novel rate shaping injector called TAIZAC (TAndem Injectors Zapping Activation); rate shaping can be realized by controlling the actuation timing of two directly-connected commercially available injectors. To investigate the potential of inversed-delta rate shaping for reduction of diesel late combustion, simultaneous high-speed UV laser diffuse back illumination (DBI), UV emissions and soot luminosity imaging of inversed-delta and conventional rectangle-injected spray flames conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber are compared.

Effect of Biofuel and Soot on Metal Wear Characteristic Using Electron Microscopy and 3D Image Processing

The soot contamination in used engine oils of diesel engine vehicles was about 1% by weight. The soot and metal wear particle sizes might be in the range of 0-1 µm and 1-25 µm, respectively. The characteristics of soot affecting on metal wear was investigated. Soot particle contamination in diesel engine oil was simulated using carbon black. Micro-nanostructure of soot particles were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and laser diffraction spectroscopy (LDS). The metal wear behavior was studied by means of a Four-Ball tribology test with wear measured. Wear roughness in micro-scale was investigated by high resolution optical microscopy (OM) , 3D rendering optical technique and SEM image processing method. It was found that the ball wear scar diameter increased proportionally to the soot primary particle size. The effect of biodiesel contamination were also increasing in wear scar diameter.

Impact of Biodiesel on Small CI Engine Combustion Behavior and Particle Emission Characteristic

Diesel engines are high thermal efficiency because of high compression ratio but produce high concentration of particulate matter (PM) because of direct injection fuel diffusion combustion. PM must be removed from the exhaust gas to protect human health. This research describes biodiesel engine performance, efficiency and combustion behavior using combustion pressure analyzer. It was clearly observed that PM emitted from CI engines can be reduced by using renewable bio-oxygenated fuels. The morphology and nanostructure of fossil fuel and biofuel PMs were investigated by using a Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology of biodiesel and diesel doesn’t have much different in the viewpoint of particulate matter trapping using DPF micro surface pores. The agglomerated ultrafine particles and primary nanoparticles sizes of diesel and biodiesel engine’s PM are approximately 50-500 nm and 20-50 nm, respectively.

Primary energy source such as fossil fuel keep decreasing due to various kind of usage. According to less amount of the fossil fuel, human seeks for an alternative fuel source such as alcohol. Alcohol like ethanol can be produced easily from strarchy plant. But using alcohol as blended fuel with diesel fuel doesn't work well because alcohol has low cetane number, lack of lubricity and very low miscibility with diesel fuel. To overcome this, fumigation system or port fuel injection of alcohol seems interesting. Although it requires more complicate system but it can compensate the miscibility issue and alcohol can be used in higher dose to give more energy. Diesel engine produces a lot of emission such as NOx and some other carbon content emission like HC, CO and soot due to they run in lean condition as their characteristic. Modern diesel engines are now coupled with exhaust gas recirculation system to help reduce in main emission like NOx.

A Progress Review on Soot Experiments and Modeling in the Engine Combustion Network (ECN)

The 4th Workshop of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) was held September 5-6, 2015 in Kyoto, Japan. This manuscript presents a summary of the progress in experiments and modeling among ECN contributors leading to a better understanding of soot formation under the ECN “Spray A” configuration and some parametric variants. Relevant published and unpublished work from prior ECN workshops is reviewed. Experiments measuring soot particle size and morphology, soot volume fraction (fv), and transient soot mass have been conducted at various international institutions providing target data for improvements to computational models. Multiple modeling contributions using both the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) Equations approach and the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) approach have been submitted. Among these, various chemical mechanisms, soot models, and turbulence-chemistry interaction (TCI) methodologies have been considered.
