Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Piston Geometry on the Performance of a Ducted Fuel Injection Engine

Ducted Fuel Injection (DFI) engines have emerged as a promising technology in the pursuit of a clean and efficient combustion process. This article aims at elucidating the effect of piston geometry on the engine performance and emissions of a metal DFI engine. Three different types of pistons were investigated and the main piston design features including the piston bowl diameter, piston bowl slope angle, duct angle and the injection nozzle position were examined. To achieve the target, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted coupled to a reduced chemical kinetics mechanism. Extensive validations were performed against the measured data from a conventional diesel engine. To calibrate the soot model, genetic algorithm and machine learning methods were utilized. The simulation results highlight the pivotal role played by piston bowl diameter and fuel injection angle in controlling soot emissions of a DFI engine.

Deflagration-Based Knock of Methanol SI Combustion and its Implications for Combustion Noise

Methanol emerges as a compelling renewable fuel for decarbonizing engine applications due to a mature industry with high production capacity, existing distribution infrastructure, low carbon intensity and favorable cost. Methanol’s high flame speed and high autoignition resistance render it particularly well-suited for spark-ignition (SI) engines. Previous research showed a distinct phenomenon, known deflagration-based knock in methanol combustion, whereby knocking combustion was observed albeit without end-gas autoignition. This work studies the implications of deflagration-based knock on noise emissions by investigating the knock intensity and combustion noise at knock-limited operation of methanol in a single-cylinder direct-injection SI engine operated at both stoichiometric and lean (λ = 2.0) conditions. Results are compared against observations from a premium-grade gasoline.

Effect of Cyclo-Pentane Impurities on the Autoignition Reactivity and Properties of a Gasoline Surrogate Fuel

Surrogate fuels that reproduce the characteristics of full-boiling range fuels are key tools to enable numerical simulations of fuel-related processes and ensure reproducibility of experiments by eliminating batch-to-batch variability. Within the PACE initiative, a surrogate fuel for regular-grade E10 (10%vol ethanol) gasoline representative of a U.S. market gasoline, termed PACE-20, was developed and adopted as baseline fuel for the consortium. Although extensive testing demonstrated that PACE-20 replicates the properties and combustion behavior of the full-boiling range gasoline, several concerns arose regarding the purity level required for the species that compose PACE-20. This is particularly important for cyclo-pentane, since commercial-grade cyclo-pentane typically shows 60%–85% purity. In the present work, the effects of the purity level of cyclo-pentane on the properties and combustion characteristics of PACE-20 were studied.

An Examination of Sensing Skins with Tailored Conductivity Distributions for Enhanced 2-D Surface Temperature Measurements Using Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT)

For 2D surface temperature monitoring applications, a variant of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) was evaluated computationally in this study. Literature examples of poor sensor performance in the center of the 2D domains away from the side electrodes motivated these efforts which seek to overcome some of the previously noted shortcomings. In particular, the use of ‘sensing skins’ with novel tailored baseline conductivities was examined using the EIDORS package for EIT. It was found that the best approach for detecting a temperature hot spot depends on several factors such as the current injection (stimulation) patterns, the measurement patterns, and the reconstruction algorithms. For well-performing combinations of these factors, customized baseline conductivities were assessed and compared to the baseline uniform conductivity.

Investigating molecular decomposition via high-speed laser-induced Rayleigh scattering

Molecular decomposition is a key chemical process in combustion systems. Particularly, the spatio-temporal information related to a fuel’s molecular breakdown is of high-importance regarding the development of combustion models and more specifically about chemical kinetic mechanisms. Most experiments rely on a variety of ultraviolet or infrared techniques to monitor the fuel breakdown process in 0-D type experiments such as those performed in shock-tubes or rapid compression machines. While the information provided by these experiments is necessary to develop and adjust kinetic mechanisms, they fail to provide the necessary data for applied combustion models to be predictive regarding the fuel’s molecular breakdown. In this work, we investigated the molecular decomposition of a fuel by applying high-speed planar laser Rayleigh scattering (PLRS).

Adapting Dimensionless Numbers Developed for Knock Prediction Under Homogeneous Conditions to Ultra-Lean Spark Ignition Conditions

Knock in spark-ignition (SI) engines has been a subject of many research efforts and its relationship with high efficiency operating conditions keeps it a contemporary issue as engine technologies push classical limits. Despite this long history of research, literature is lacking coherent and generalized descriptions of how knock is affected by changes in the full cylinder temperature field, residence time (engine speed), and air/fuel ratio. In this work, two dimensionless numbers are applied to fully 3D SI conditions. First, the characteristic time of autoignition (ignition delay) is compared against the characteristic time of end-gas deflagration, which was used to predict knocking propensity. Second, the temperature gradient of the end-gas is compared against a critical detonation-based temperature gradient, which predicts the knock intensity.

Analysis and Testing of Optimal Power Control Strategy for NASA Moon Base Interconnected DC Microgrid System

As a part of NASA’s efforts in space, options are being examined for an Artemis moon base project to be deployed. This project requires a system of interconnected, but separate, DC microgrids for habitation, mining, and fuel processing. This in-place use of power resources is called in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). These microgrids are to be separated by 9-12 km and each contains a photovoltaic (PV) source, energy storage systems (ESS), and a variety of loads, separated by level of criticality in operation. The separate microgrids need to be able to transfer power between themselves in cases where there are generation shortfall, faults, or other failures in order to keep more critical loads running and ensure safety of personnel and the success of mission goals. In this work, a 2 grid microgrid system is analyzed involving a habitation unit and a mining unit separated by a tie line.

Impact of Hydrogen on the Ignition and Combustion Behavior Diesel Sprays in a Dual Fuel, Diesel-Piloted, Premixed Hydrogen Engine

Renewably sourced hydrogen is seen as promising sustainable carbon-free alternative to conventional fossil fuels for use in hard to decarbonize sectors. As the hydrogen supply builds up, dual-fuel hydrogen-diesel engines have a particular advantage of fuel flexibility as they can operate only on diesel fuel in case of supply shortages, in addition to the simplicity of engine modification. The dual-fuel compression ignition strategy initiates combustion of hydrogen using short pilot-injections of diesel fuel into the combustion chamber. In the context of such engine combustion process, the impact of hydrogen addition on the ignition and combustion behavior of a pilot diesel-spray is investigated in a heavy-duty, single-cylinder, optical engine. To this end, the spatial and temporal evolution of two-stage autoignition of a diesel-fuel surrogate, n-heptane, injected into a premixed charge of hydrogen and air is studied using optical diagnostics.

Effects of Injector Included Angle on Low-Load Low Temperature Gasoline Combustion Using LES

A novel advanced combustion strategy that employs the kinetically controlled compression ignition of gasoline whose autoignition is sensitive to fuel concentration is termed Low Temperature Gasoline Combustion. The LTGC method can achieve high thermal efficiency with a commercially available fuel while generating ultra-low soot and NOx emissions relative to the conventional combustion modes. At high loads, a double direct injection (D-DI) strategy is used where the first injection generates a background premixed charge while a second compression stroke injection controls the level of fuel stratification on a cycle-to-cycle basis to manage the heat release rates. With lower loads, this combustion performance of this D-DI strategy decreases as the background charge becomes increasingly lean. Instead, a single direct injection (S-DI) is used at lower loads to maintain an adequate combustion efficiency.

Effect of Spray Collapse on Mixture Preparation and Combustion Characteristics of a Spark-Ignition Heavy-Duty Diesel Optical Engine Fueled with Direct-Injected Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), as a common alternative fuel for internal combustion engines is currently widespread in use for fleet vehicles. However, a current majority of the LPG-fueled engines, uses port-fuel injection that offers lower power density when compared to a gasoline engine of equivalent displacement volume. This is due to the lower molecular weight and higher volatility of LPG components that displaces more air in the intake charge due to the larger volume occupied by the gaseous fuel. LPG direct-injection during the closed-valve portion of the cycle can avoid displacement of intake air and can thereby help achieve comparable gasoline-engine power densities. However, under certain engine operating conditions, direct-injection sprays can collapse and lead to sub-optimal fuel-air mixing, wall-wetting, incomplete combustion, and increased pollutant emissions.

Characterization of High-Tumble Flow Effects on Early Injection for a Lean-Burn Gasoline Engine

The influence of early induction stroke direct injection on late-cycle flows was investigated for a lean-burn, high-tumble, gasoline engine. The engine features side-mounted injection and was operated at a moderate load (8.5 bar brake mean effective pressure) and engine speed (2000 revolutions per minute) condition representative of a significant portion of the duty cycle for a hybridized powertrain system. Thermodynamic engine tests were used to evaluate cam phasing, injection schedule, and ignition timing such that an optimal balance of acceptable fuel economy, combustion stability, and engine-out nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions was achieved. A single cylinder of the 4-cylinder thermodynamic engine was outfitted with an endoscope that enabled direct imaging of the spark discharge and early flame development.

CFD-Based Assessment of the Effect of End-Gas Temperature Stratification on Acoustic Knock Generation in an Ultra-Lean Burn Spark Ignition Engine

End-gas temperature stratification has long been studied with respect to its effect on stoichiometric spark-ignition (SI) engine knock. The role of temperature stratification for homogeneous-charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine operation is also reasonably well understood. However, the role of temperature stratification in ultra-lean SI engines has had less coverage. Literature is lacking well-controlled studies of how knock is affected by changes in the full cylinder temperature fields, especially since cycle-to-cycle variability can impede a determination of cause and effect. In this work, the knocking propensity of specific cylinder conditions is investigated via 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations utilizing a large eddy simulation (LES) framework.

Optical Investigation of Mixture Formation in a Hydrogen-Fueled Heavy-Duty Engine with Direct-Injection

Mixture formation in a hydrogen-fueled heavy-duty engine with direct injection and a nearly-quiescent top-hat combustion chamber was investigated using laser-induced fluorescence imaging, with 1,4-difluorobenzene serving as a fluorescent tracer seeded into hydrogen. The engine was motored at 1200 rpm, 1.0 bar intake pressure, and 335 K intake temperature. An outward opening medium-pressure hollow-cone injector was operated at two different injection pressures and five different injection timings from early injection during the intake stroke to late injection towards the end of compression stroke. Fuel fumigation upstream of the intake provided a well-mixed reference case for image calibration. This paper presents the evolution of in-cylinder equivalence ratio distribution evaluated during the injection event itself for the cylinder-axis plane and during the compression stroke at different positions of the light sheet within the swirl plane.

Experimental and Numerical Study on the Effect of Nitric Oxide on Autoignition and Knock in a Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine

Nitric Oxide (NO) can significantly influence the autoignition reactivity and this can affect knock limits in conventional stoichiometric SI engines. Previous studies also revealed that the role of NO changes with fuel type. Fuels with high RON (Research Octane Number) and high Octane Sensitivity (S = RON - MON (Motor Octane Number)) exhibited monotonically retarding knock-limited combustion phasing (KL-CA50) with increasing NO. In contrast, for a high-RON, low-S fuel, the addition of NO initially resulted in a strongly retarded KL-CA50 but beyond the certain amount of NO, KL-CA50 advanced again. The current study focuses on same high-RON, low-S Alkylate fuel to better understand the mechanisms responsible for the reversal in the effect of NO on KL-CA50 beyond a certain amount of NO.

Numerical and Experimental Studies of a Novel Dimpled Stepped-Lip Piston Design on Turbulent Flow Development in a Medium-Duty Diesel Engine

Spray-wall interactions in diesel engines have a strong influence on turbulent flow evolution and mixing, which influences the engine’s thermal efficiency and pollutant-emissions behavior. Previous optical experiments and numerical investigations of a stepped-lip diesel piston bowl focused on how spray-wall interactions influence the formation of squish-region vortices and their sensitivity to injection timing. Such vortices are stronger and longer-lived at retarded injection timings and are correlated with faster late-cycle heat release and soot reductions, but are weaker and shorter-lived as injection timing is advanced. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations predict that piston bowls with more space in the squish region can enhance the strength of these vortices at near-TDC injection timings, which is hypothesized to further improve peak thermal efficiency and reduce emissions. The dimpled stepped-lip (DSL) piston is such a design.

A Numerical and Experimental Investigation on Different Strategies to Evaluate Heat Release Rate and Performance of a Passive Pre-Chamber Ignition System

Pre-chamber ignition has demonstrated capability to increase internal combustion engine in-cylinder burn rates and enable the use of low engine-out pollutant emission combustion strategies. In the present study, newly designed passive pre-chambers with different nozzle-hole patterns - that featured combinations of radial and axial nozzles - were experimentally investigated in an optically accessible, single-cylinder research engine. The pre-chambers analyzed had a narrow throat geometry to increase the velocity of the ejected jets. In addition to a conventional inductive spark igniter, a nanosecond spark ignition system that promotes faster early burn rates was also investigated. Time-resolved visualization of ignition and combustion processes was accomplished through high-speed hydroxyl radical (OH*) chemiluminescence imaging. Pressure was measured during the engine cycle in both the main chamber and pre-chamber to monitor respective combustion progress.

Non-Equilibrium Law-of-the-Wall Modeling for Improved Heat Transfer Predictions: Model Development and Validation

A one-dimensional, non-equilibrium, compressible law of the wall model is proposed to increase the accuracy of heat transfer predictions from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of internal combustion engine flows on engineering grids. Our 1D model solves the transient turbulent Navier-Stokes equations for mass, momentum, energy and turbulence under the thin-layer assumption, using a finite-difference spatial scheme and a high-order implicit time integration method. A new algebraic eddy-viscosity closure, derived from the Han-Reitz equilibrium law of the wall, with enhanced Prandtl number sensitivity and compressibility effects, was developed for optimal performance. Several eddy viscosity sub-models were tested for turbulence closure, including the two-equation k-epsilon and k-omega, which gave insufficient performance.

Effect of Fuel Cetane Number on the Performance of Catalyst-Heating Operation in a Medium-duty Diesel Engine

To comply with increasingly stringent pollutant emissions regulations, diesel engine operation in a catalyst-heating mode is critical to achieve rapid light-off of exhaust aftertreatment catalysts during the first minutes of cold starting. Current approaches to catalyst-heating operation typically involve one or more late post injections to retard combustion phasing and increase exhaust temperatures. The ability to retard post injection timing(s) while maintaining acceptable pollutant emissions levels is pivotal for improved catalyst-heating calibrations. Higher fuel cetane number has been reported to enable later post injections with increased exhaust heat and decreased pollutant emissions, but the mechanism is not well understood. The purpose of this experimental and numerical simulation study is to provide further insight into the ways in which fuel cetane number affects combustion and pollutant formation in a medium-duty diesel engine.

A New Pathway for Prediction of Gasoline Sprays using Machine-Learning Algorithms

The fuel spray process is of utmost importance to internal combustion engine design as it dominates engine performance and emissions characteristics. While designers rely on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling for understanding of the air-fuel mixing process, there are recognized shortcomings in current CFD spray predictions, particularly under super-critical or flash-boiling conditions. In contrast, time-resolved optical spray experiments have now produced datasets for the three-dimensional liquid distribution for a wide range of operating conditions and fuels. By utilizing such a large amount of detailed experimental data, the machine learning (ML) techniques have opened new pathways for the prediction of fuel sprays under various engine-like conditions.

Spatio-Temporal Progression of Two-Stage Autoignition for Diesel Sprays in a Low-Reactivity Ambient: n-Heptane Pilot-Ignited Premixed Natural Gas

The spatial and temporal locations of autoignition depend on fuel chemistry and the temperature, pressure, and mixing trajectories in the fuel jets. Dual-fuel systems can provide insight into fuel-chemistry aspects through variation of the proportions of fuels with different reactivities, and engine operating condition variations can provide information on physical effects. In this context, the spatial and temporal progression of two-stage autoignition of a diesel-fuel surrogate, n-heptane, in a lean-premixed charge of synthetic natural gas (NG) and air is imaged in an optically accessible heavy-duty diesel engine. The lean-premixed charge of NG is prepared by fumigation upstream of the engine intake manifold.
