Transmission of sound under the influence of various environmental conditions

Electrified vehicles are particularly quiet, especially at low speeds due to the absence of combustion noises. This is why there are laws worldwide for artificial driving sounds to warn pedestrians. These sounds are generated using a so-called Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) which must maintain certain minimum sound pressure levels in specific frequency ranges at low speeds. The creation of the sound currently involves an iterative and sometimes time-consuming process that combines composing the sound on a computer with measuring the levels with a car on an outside noise test track. This continues until both the legal requirements and the subjective demands of vehicle manufacturers are met. To optimize this process and reduce the measurement effort on the outside noise test track, the goal is to replace the measurement with a simulation for a significant portion of the development.

Redundant Sensor-Based Perception Sensor Reliability Estimation from Field Tests without Reference Truth

The introduction of autonomous vehicles has gained significant attention due to its potential to revolutionize mobility and safety. A critical aspect underpinning the functionality of these autonomous vehicles is their sensor perception system. Demonstrating the reliability of the environment perception sensors and sensor fusion algorithms is, therefore, a necessary step in the development of automated vehicles. Field tests offer testing conditions that come closest to the environment of an automated vehicle in the future. However, a significant challenge in field tests is to obtain a reference truth of the surrounding environment. Here, we propose a pipeline to assess the sensor reliabilities without the need for a reference truth. The pipeline uses a model to estimate the reliability of redundant sensors. To do this, it relies on a binary representation of the surrounding area, which indicates either the presence or absence of an object.

Cold Start Performance of Sustainable Oxygenated Spark Ignition Fuels

The objective of this study was to reduce pollutant emissions during cold start conditions in a spark-ignited direct injection engine, by exploring the potential of oxygenated fuels. With their high oxygen content and lack of direct C-C bonds, they effectively reduce particle number (PN) and NOx emissions under normal conditions. Methanol was chosen due to its wide availability. As methanol is toxic to humans and associated with cold-start issues, a second promising synthetic fuel was selected to be benchmarked against gasoline, comprising 65 vol% of dimethyl carbonate and 35 vol% of methyl formate (C65F5). Currently, there is a lack of detailed investigations on the cold start performance for both oxygenated fuels utilizing today’s injector capabilities. Spray measurements were caried out in a constant volume chamber to assess the spray of C65F35. Reduced fuel temperature increased spray-penetration length and compromised fast vaporization.

Trailer Electrification – A HIL Approach for MPC Powertrain Control to Ensure Driver Safety in Micromobility

Bicycle-drawn cargo trailers with an electric drive to enable the transportation of high cargo loads are used as part of the last-mile logistics. Depending on the load, the total mass of a trailer can vary between approx. 50 and 250 kg, potentially more than the mass of the towing bicycle. This can result in major changes in acceleration and braking behavior of the overall system. While existing systems are designed primarily to provide sufficient power, improvements are needed in the powertrain control system in terms of driver safety and comfort. Hence, we propose a novel prototype that allows measurement of the tensile force in the drawbar which can subsequently be used to design a superior control system. In this context, a sinusoidal force input from the cyclist to the trailer according to the cadence of the cyclist is observed. The novelty of this research is to analyze whether torque impulses of the cyclist can be reduced with the help of Model Predictive Control (MPC).

Applications of an Advanced Multiple Injection Calibration Strategy to Address Future Emission Legislation Challenges

A novel algorithm-based approach is employed in this publication to calculate multiple direct injection patterns for spark ignition engines. The algorithm is verified by investigating the combustion and emission behavior of a single-cylinder research engine. State-of-the-art standard exhaust gas analyzers, a particle counter and an additional FTIR analyzer enable in-depth investigation of engine exhaust gas composition. With the upcoming worldwide pollutant emission targets, the emission limits will be reduced while the test procedures’ requirements to the engine increase. Special attention to the engine-out emissions must be paid during cold-start, during which the aftertreatment system lacks sufficient pollutant emission conversion efficiency. With advanced injection control, the engine-out emissions can be reduced and exhaust aftertreatment heat-up can be accelerated.

Comparison of Deep Learning Architectures for Dimensionality Reduction of 3D Flow Fields of a Racing Car

In motorsports, aerodynamic development processes target to achieve gains in performance. This requires a comprehensive understanding of the prevailing aerodynamics and the capability of analysing large quantities of numerical data. However, manual analysis of a significant amount of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) data is time consuming and complex. The motivation is to optimize the aerodynamic analysis workflow with the use of deep learning architectures. In this research, variants of 3D deep learning models (3D-DL) such as Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) and U-Net frameworks are applied to flow fields obtained from Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations to transform the high-dimensional CFD domain into a low-dimensional embedding. Consequently, model order reduction enables the identification of inherent flow structures represented by the latent space of the models.

A New Generation Automotive Tool Access Architecture for Remote in-Field Diagnosis

Software complexity of vehicles is constantly growing especially with additional autonomous driving features being introduced. This increases the risk for bugs in the system, when the car is delivered. According to a car manufacturer, more than 90% of availability problems corresponding to Electronic Control Unit (ECU) functionality are either caused by software bugs or they can be resolved by applying software updates to overcome hardware issues. The main concern are sporadic errors which are not caught during the development phase since their trigger condition is too unlikely to occur or is not covered by the tests. For such systems, there is a need of safe and secure infield diagnosis. In this paper we present a tool software architecture with remote access, which facilitates standard read/write access, an efficient channel interface for communication and file I/O, and continuous trace.

Algorithm-Calculated Multiple Injection Patterns to Meet Future Requirements to Direct-Injection Spark Ignited Engines

Future emission regulations require further development for internal combustion engines operating on gasoline. To comply with such regulations and simultaneously improve fuel efficiency, major development trends are found in reduced displacements, increased compression ratios and turbocharging. To counteract such engines’ increased tendencies to knocking combustion, direct fuel injection systems are necessarily applied. Compared to standard port fuel injection, direct injection systems cause increased particle emissions. State-of-the-art magnet-driven gasoline direct injectors are capable of realizing various injection events of small injected mass per event and short dwell time between one another. Thereby, they facilitate multiple injection strategies, able to overcome the drawbacks of direct injection systems in relation to exhaust emissions. However, the full potential of multiple injection strategies is not yet taken advantage of.

Deep neural network models have been widely used for environment perception of intelligent vehicles. However, due to models’ innate probabilistic property, the lack of transparency, and sensitivity to data, perception results have inevitable uncertainties. To compensate for the weakness of probabilistic models, many pieces of research have been proposed to analyze and quantify such uncertainties. For safety-critical intelligent vehicles, the uncertainty analysis of data and models for environment perception is especially important. Uncertainty estimation can be a way to quantify the risk of environment perception. In this regard, it is essential to deliver a comprehensive survey. This work presents a comprehensive overview of uncertainty estimation in deep neural networks for environment perception of intelligent vehicles.

Variational Autoencoders for Dimensionality Reduction of Automotive Vibroacoustic Models

In order to predict reality as accurately as possible leads to the fact that numerical models in automotive vibroacoustic problems become increasingly high dimensional. This makes applications with a large number of model evaluations, e.g. optimization tasks or uncertainty quantification hard to solve, as they become computationally very expensive. Engineers are thus faced with the challenge of making decisions based on a limited number of model evaluations, which increases the need for data-efficient methods and reduced order models. In this contribution, variational autoencoders (VAEs) are used to reduce the dimensionality of the vibroacoustic model of a vehicle body and to find a low-dimensional latent representation of the system.

Adaptation and Engine Validation of an FTIR Exhaust Gas Analysis Method for C1-Based Potential GHG-Neutral Synthetic Fuels/Gasoline-Blends Containing Dimethyl Carbonate and Methyl Formate

The European Commission has released strict emission regulations for passenger cars in the past decade in order to improve air quality in cities and limit harmful emission exposure to humans. In the near future, even stricter regulations containing more realistic/demanding driving scenarios and covering more exhaust gas components are expected to be released. Passenger cars fueled with gasoline are one contributor to unhealthy air conditions, due to the fact that gasoline engines emit harmful air pollutants. One option to minimize harmful emissions would be to utilize specifically tailored, low emission synthetic fuels or fuel blends in internal combustion engines. Methyl formate and dimethyl carbonate are two promising candidates to replace or substitute gasoline, which in previous studies have proven to significantly decrease harmful pollutants.

Investigation of the Drag Losses of Wet Clutches at Dip Lubrication

Wet running multi-plate clutches and brakes are important components of modern automotive and industrial powertrains. In the open stage, drag losses occur due to fluid shearing. This can subsequently lead to a perceptible reduction in the overall drivetrain efficiency. Injection or dip lubrication is used, depending on the application and the requirements. For the former a deep fundamental understanding already exists, whereas up until now the latter has not been extensively investigated. This contribution gives a detailed insight into the experimental research of the drag losses of wet running multi-plate clutches at dip lubrication. In a base study, the flow conditions and origins of the drag torque generation were investigated. Built on this, the effects of operating and geometry parameters, such as oil viscosity and level, clearance, groove design, plate size and number of gaps on the drag loss characteristic, were determined based on full factorial testing.

Analysis of the Piston Group Friction in a Single-Cylinder Gasoline Engine When Operated with Synthetic Fuel DMC/MeFo

Synthetic fuels for internal combustion engines offer CO2-neutral mobility if produced in a closed carbon cycle using renewable energies. C1-based synthetic fuels can offer high knock resistance as well as soot free combustion due to their molecular structure containing oxygen and no direct C-C bonds. Such fuels as, for example, dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and methyl formate (MeFo) have great potential to replace gasoline in spark-ignition (SI) engines. In this study, a mixture of 65% DMC and 35% MeFo (C65F35) was used in a single-cylinder research engine to determine friction losses in the piston group using the floating-liner method. The results were benchmarked against gasoline (G100). Compared to gasoline, the density of C65F35 is almost 40% higher, but its mass-based lower heating value (LHV) is 2.8 times lower. Hence, more fuel must be injected to reach the same engine load as in a conventional gasoline engine, leading to an increased cooling effect.

Comparison of Promising Sustainable C1-Fuels Methanol, Dimethyl Carbonate, and Methyl Formate in a DISI Single-Cylinder Light Vehicle Gasoline Engine

On the way to a climate-neutral mobility, synthetic fuels with their potential of CO2-neutral production are currently in the focus of internal combustion research. In this study, the C1-fuels methanol (MeOH), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and methyl formate (MeFo) are tested as pure fuel mixtures and as blend components for gasoline. The study was performed on a single-cylinder engine in two configurations, thermodynamic and optical. As pure C1-fuels, the previously investigated DMC/MeFo mixture is compared with a mixture of MeOH/MeFo. DMC is replaced by MeOH because of its benefits regarding laminar flame speed, ignition limits and production costs. MeOH/MeFo offers favorable particle number (PN) emissions at a cooling water temperature of 40 °C and in high load operating points. However, a slight increase of NOx emissions related to DMC/MeFo was observed. Both mixtures show no sensitivity in PN emissions for rich combustions. This was also verified with help of the optical engine.

Reducing Vehicle Glass Sensitivity to Turbulent Pressure

Vehicle interior wind noise is typically managed through the overall exterior geometry of the vehicle, mirror shape and mounting location, sealing features and glass thickness and damping. Prior research has distinguished between contribution of fluctuating pressure due to air turbulence as compared to acoustic pressure to a passenger vehicles exterior at highway speeds. Because of the large difference in propagation speed between turbulent and acoustic pressure for on-road passenger vehicles, the structural response of the glass to turbulent versus acoustic pressure is not the same. The acoustic coincidence frequency of door glass is typically in the 2-3 kHz range. Turbulent coincidence frequency is much lower, and the effective transmission loss (TL) of the glass depends on the mix of turbulent and acoustic pressure on the exterior surface of the glass.

Coupled-SEA Application to Full Vehicle with Numerical Turbulent Model Excitation for Wind Noise Improvement

Wind noise is becoming a higher priority in the automotive industry. Several past studies investigated whether Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) can be utilized to predict wind noise. Because wind noise analysis requires both radiation and transmission modeling in a wide frequency band, turbulent-structure-acoustic-coupled-SEA is being used. Past research investigated coupled-SEA’s benefit, but the model is usually simplified to enable easier consideration on the input side. However, the vehicle is composed of multiple interior parts and possible interior countermeasure consideration is needed. To enable this, at first, a more detailed coupled-SEA model is built from the acoustic-SEA model which has a larger number of degrees of freedom for the interior side. Then, the model is modified to account for sound radiation effects induced by turbulent and acoustic pressure.

Identification of In-Cylinder Aerosol Flow Induced Emissions due to Piston Ring Design in a DISI Single Cylinder LV Engine Using Oxygenated Synthetic Fuels

In the near future, pollutant and GHG emission regulations in the transport sector will become increasingly stringent. For this reason, there are many studies in the field of internal combustion research that investigate alternative fuels, one example being oxygenated fuels. Additionally, the design of engine components needs to be optimized to improve the thresholds of clean combustion and thus reduce particulates. Simulations based on PRiME 3D® for dynamic behaviors inside the piston ring group provide a guideline for experimental investigation. Gas flows into the combustion chamber are controlled by adjusting the piston ring design. A direct comparison of regular and synthetic fuels enables to separate the emissions caused by oil and fuel. This study employed a mixture of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and methyl formate (MeFo).

Potential Analysis of a DMC/MeFo Mixture in a DISI Single and Multi-Cylinder Light Vehicle Gasoline Engine

In this study a mixture of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and methyl formate (MeFo) was used as a synthetic gasoline replacement. These synthetic fuels offer CO2-neutral mobility if the fuels are produced in a closed CO2-cycle and they reduce harmful emissions like particulates and NOX. For base potential investigations, a single-cylinder research engine (SCE) was used. An in-depth analysis of real driving cycles in a series 4-cylinder engine (4CE) confirmed the high potential for emission reduction as well as efficiency benefits. Beside the benefit of lower exhaust emissions, especially NOX and particle number (PN) emissions, some additional potential was observed in the SCE. During a start of injection (SOI) variation it could be detected that a late SOI of DMC/MeFo has less influence on combustion stability and ignitability. With this widened range for the SOI the engine application can be improved for example by catalyst heating or stratified mode.

Optical Investigations of an Oxygenated Alternative Fuel in a Single Cylinder DISI Light Vehicle Gasoline Engine

In this study, a fully optically accessible single-cylinder research engine is the basis for the visualization and generation of extensive knowledge about the in-cylinder processes of mixture formation, ignition and combustion of oxygenated synthetic fuels. Previous measurements in an all-metal engine showed promising results by using a mixture of dimethyl carbonate and methyl formate as a fuel substitute in a DISI-engine. Lower THC and NOx emissions were observed along with a low PN-value, implying low-soot combustion. The flame luminosity transmitted via an optical piston was split in the optical path to simultaneously record the natural flame luminosity with an RGB high-speed camera. The second channel consisted of OH*-chemiluminescence recording, isolated by a bandpass filter via an intensified monochrome high-speed camera.

Three-Way Catalytic Reaction in an Electric Field for Exhaust Emission Control Application

To prevent global warming, further reductions in carbon dioxide are required. It is therefore important to promote the spread of electric vehicles powered by internal combustion engines and electric vehicles without internal combustion engines. As a result, emissions from hybrid electric vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines should be further reduced. Interest in catalytic reactions in an electric field with a higher catalytic activity compared to conventional catalysts has increased because this technology consumes less energy than other electrical heating devices. This study was therefore undertaken to apply a catalytic reaction in an electric field to an exhaust emission control. First, the original experimental equipment was built with a high voltage system used to conduct catalytic activity tests.
