The 2023 FISITA White Paper (for which the author was a contributor) on managing in-service emissions and transportation options, to reduce CO2 from the existing vehicle fleet, proposed 6 levers which could be activated to complement the rapid transition to vehicles using only renewable energy sources. Another management opportunity is reported here which is optimizing the vehicle’s life in-service to minimize the life-cycle impact of a range of present and upcoming vehicles. This opportunity involves the study of the US vehicle fleet which for cars and other LDVs has quite different characteristics to EU27 vehicles. For example, the average annual distance driven is 30% longer in the US and the decline in annual km with age is different too. More over the embodied CO2 is based on ANL’s GREET rather than SIMA-PRO (EU27) methodology.
