Moments of Power: Statistical Analysis of the Primary Energy Consumption of a Vehicle

The energy consumption of a vehicle is typically determined either by testing or in simulation. While both approaches are valid, they only work for a specific drive cycle, they are time intensive, and they do not directly result in a closed-form relationship between key parameters and consumption. This paper presents an alternative approach that determines the consumption based on a simple analytical model of the vehicle and statistical parameters of the drive cycle, specifically the moments of the velocity. This results in a closed-form solution that can be used for analysis or synthesis. The drive cycle is quantified via its moments, specifically the average speed, the standard deviation of the speed as well as the higher order moments skewness, and the kurtosis. A mixed quadratic term is added to account for acceleration or aggressiveness, but it is noticeably distinct from the conventional metric of positive kinetic energy (PKE).

Turbogenerator Transient Energy Recovery Model

Significant exhaust enthalpy is wasted in gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engines; even at moderate loads the WG (Wastegate) starts to open. This action is required to reduce EBP (Exhaust Back Pressure). Another factor is catalyst protection, placed downstream turbine. Lambda enrichment is used to perform this. However, the conventional turbine has a temperature drop across it when used for energy recovery. Catalyst performance is critical for emissions, therefore the only location for any additional device is downstream of it. This is a challenge for any additional energy recovery, but a smaller turbine is a design requirement, optimised to work at lower operating pressure ratios. A WAVE model of the 2.0L GTDI engine was adapted to include a TG (Turbogenerator) and TBV (Turbine Bypass Valve) with the TG in a mechanical turbocompounding configuration, calibrated with steady state dynamometer data to estimate drive cycle benefit.

Analytical Rotordynamic Study of a High-Speed Gear Transmission System for Race Applications

In motorsport power transmission systems, high-speed operation can be associated with significant rotordynamic effects. Changes in the natural frequencies of lateral (bending) vibrational modes as a function of spin speed are brought about by gyroscopic action linked to flexible shafts and mounted gear components. In the investigation of high-speed systems, it is important that these effects are included in the analysis in order to accurately predict the critical speeds encountered due to the action of the gear mesh and other sources of excitation. The rotordynamic behaviour of the system can interact with crucial physical parameters of the transmission, such as the stiffnesses of the gear mesh and rolling element-to-raceway contact in the bearings. In addition, the presence of the gear mesh acts to couple the lateral and torsional vibration modes of a dual-shaft transmission through which a torque flows.

Prediction of Acoustic Emissions of Turbocharger Bearings

Turbochargers are progressively used in modern automotive engines to enhance engine performance and reduce energy loss and adverse emissions. Use of turbochargers along with other modern technologies has enabled development of significantly downsized internal combustion engines. However, turbochargers are major sources of acoustic emissions in modern automobiles. Their acoustics has a distinctive signature, originating from fluid-structure interactions. The bearing systems of turbochargers also constitute an important noise source. In this case, the acoustic emissions can mainly be attributed to hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations of the lubricant film. The developed analytical model determines the lubricant pressure distribution in the floating journal bearings used mainly in the modern turbocharges. This allows for an estimation of acoustic emissions.

On Predicting Automotive Clutch Torsional Vibrations

Automotive clutches are prone to rigid body torsional vibrations during engagement, a phenomenon referred to as take-up judder. This is also accompanied by fore and aft vehicle motions. Aside from driver behaviour in sudden release of clutch pedal (resulting in loss of clamp load), and type and state of friction lining material, the interfacial slip speed and contact temperature can significantly affect the propensity of clutch to judder. The ability to accurately predict the judder phenomenon relies significantly on the determination of operational frictional characteristics of the clutch lining material. This is dependent upon contact pressure, temperature and interfacial slip speed. The current study investigates the ability to predict clutch judder vibration with the degree of complexity of the torsional dynamics model. For this purpose, the results from a four and nine degrees of freedom dynamics models are compared and discussed.

On the Effect of Clutch Dynamic Properties on Noise, Vibration and Harshness Phenomena

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) phenomena can manifest themselves during the engagement and disengagement of dry friction clutch systems. Such phenomena can have a negative impact on cabin occupants’ driving experience as well as on others in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. Typically, unwanted NVH phenomena that pertain to the clutch system include Judder, Chatter, Squeal and Eek. These are recognized by the quality of the radiated noise, as well as the dynamics occurring during clutch actuation. The aim of the current study is to utilize a numerical clutch system model (fully coupling the main motions of the clutch components) to predict clutch dynamics during engagement manoeuvres. The model will be used to assess the effect of various clutch design parameters on mitigating system instability. The clutch model utilizes measured coefficient of friction data from a rotary tribometer at representative slip speeds and friction surface contact pressures.

Factors Affecting Child Injury Risk in Motor-Vehicle Crashes

Current recommendations for restraining child occupants are based on biomechanical testing and data from national and international field studies primarily conducted prior to 2011. We hypothesized that analysis to identify factors associated with pediatric injury in motor-vehicle crashes using a national database of more recent police-reported crashes in the United States involving children under age 13 where type of child restraint system (CRS) is recorded would support previous recommendations. Weighted data were extracted from the National Automotive Sampling System General Estimates System (NASS-GES) for crash years 2010 to 2015. Injury outcomes were grouped as CO (possible and no injury) or KAB (killed, incapacitating injury, non-incapacitating injury). Restraint was characterized as optimal, suboptimal, or unrestrained based on current best practice recommendations. Analysis used survey methods to identify factors associated with injury.

A Study on Attenuating Gear Teeth Oscillations at Low Engine Speeds Using Nonlinear Vibration Absorbers

Gear oscillations are one of the most common sources of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) issues manifested in automotive powertrains. These oscillations are generated mainly due to impacts of the meshing gear teeth over a broad frequency range. To mitigate NVH phenomena, automotive manufacturers traditionally couple linear tuned vibration absorbers to the driveline. Common palliatives used are clutch dampers and dual mass flywheels, which generally suppress vibrations effectively only over narrow frequency bands. Nonlinear Energy Sinks (NESs) are a class of vibration absorbers with essentially nonlinear characteristics that are designed for dissipating vibration energy over broad frequency ranges (due to the employed nonlinearity). The NES does not have a preferential natural frequency; this is rather characterized by the nonlinear stiffness.

The objective of this study was to optimize advanced restraint systems for protecting rear seat occupants with a range of body sizes under different frontal crash pulses. A Review of the Literature on Modelling of Integrated SCR-in-DPF Systems

The integration of selective catalytic reduction catalysts (SCR) into diesel particulate filters (DPF) as a way to treat nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emission is an emerging technology in diesel exhaust aftertreatment. This is driven by ever-tightening limits on NOx and PM emission. In an integrated SCR-in-DPF (also known as SCRF®, SCR-on-DPF, SDPF, or SCR coated filter), the SCR catalyst is impregnated within the porous walls of the DPF. The compact, low weight/volume of the integrated unit provides improvement in the diesel engine cold start emission performance. Experimental investigations have shown comparable performance with standard SCR and DPF units for NOx conversion and PM control, respectively. The modelling of the integrated unit is complicated.

Development, Evaluation, and Sensitivity Analysis of Parametric Finite Element Whole-Body Human Models in Side Impacts

Occupant stature and body shape may have significant effects on injury risks in motor vehicle crashes, but the current finite element (FE) human body models (HBMs) only represent occupants with a few sizes and shapes. Our recent studies have demonstrated that, by using a mesh morphing method, parametric FE HBMs can be rapidly developed for representing a diverse population. However, the biofidelity of those models across a wide range of human attributes has not been established. Therefore, the objectives of this study are 1) to evaluate the accuracy of HBMs considering subject-specific geometry information, and 2) to apply the parametric HBMs in a sensitivity analysis for identifying the specific parameters affecting body responses in side impact conditions. Four side-impact tests with two male post-mortem human subjects (PMHSs) were selected to evaluate the accuracy of the geometry and impact responses of the morphed HBMs.

A Pilot Study of Occupant Accommodation and Seat Belt Fit for Law Enforcement Officers

Law enforcement officers (LEO) make extensive use of vehicles to perform their jobs, often spending large portions of a shift behind the wheel. Few LEO vehicles are purpose-built; the vast majority are modified civilian vehicles. Data from the field indicate that LEO suffer from relatively high levels musculoskeletal injury that may be due in part to poor accommodation provided by their vehicles. LEO are also exposed to elevated crash injury risk, which may be exacerbated by a compromise in the performance of the occupant restraint systems due to body-borne equipment. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate the application of three-dimensional anthropometric scanning and measurement technology to address critical concerns related to vehicle design. Detailed posture and belt fit data were gathered from five law enforcement officers as they sat in the patrol vehicles that they regularly used and in a mockup of a mid-sized vehicle.

Modelling the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Mass Flow Rate in Modern Diesel Engines

The intrinsic model accuracy limit of a commonly used Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) mass flow rate model in diesel engine air path control is discussed in this paper. This EGR mass flow rate model is based on the flow of a compressible ideal gas with unchanged specific heat ratio through a restriction cross-area within a duct. A practical identification procedure of the model parameters is proposed based on the analysis of the engine data and model structure. This procedure has several advantages which include simplicity, low computation burden and low engine test cost. It is shown that model tuning requires only an EGR valve sweep test at a few engine steady state operating points.

Integration of Active and Passive Safety Technologies - A Method to Study and Estimate Field Capability

The objective of this study is to develop a method that uses a combination of field data analysis, naturalistic driving data analysis, and computational simulations to explore the potential injury reduction capabilities of integrating passive and active safety systems in frontal impact conditions. For the purposes of this study, the active safety system is actually a driver assist (DA) feature that has the potential to reduce delta-V prior to a crash, in frontal or other crash scenarios. A field data analysis was first conducted to estimate the delta-V distribution change based on an assumption of 20% crash avoidance resulting from a pre-crash braking DA feature. Analysis of changes in driver head location during 470 hard braking events in a naturalistic driving study found that drivers’ head positions were mostly in the center position before the braking onset, while the percentage of time drivers leaning forward or backward increased significantly after the braking onset.

Development and Validation of an Older Occupant Finite Element Model of a Mid-Sized Male for Investigation of Age-related Injury Risk

The aging population is a growing concern as the increased fragility and frailty of the elderly results in an elevated incidence of injury as well as an increased risk of mortality and morbidity. To assess elderly injury risk, age-specific computational models can be developed to directly calculate biomechanical metrics for injury. The first objective was to develop an older occupant Global Human Body Models Consortium (GHBMC) average male model (M50) representative of a 65 year old (YO) and to perform regional validation tests to investigate predicted fractures and injury severity with age. Development of the GHBMC M50 65 YO model involved implementing geometric, cortical thickness, and material property changes with age. Regional validation tests included a chest impact, a lateral impact, a shoulder impact, a thoracoabdominal impact, an abdominal bar impact, a pelvic impact, and a lateral sled test.

Feasibility Study of Operating 2-Stroke Miller Cycles on a 4-Stroke Platform through Variable Valve Train

A 2-stroke combustion cycle has higher power output densities compared to a 4-stroke cycle counterpart. The modern down-sized 4-stroke engine design can greatly benefit from this attribute of the 2-stroke cycle. By using appropriate variable valvetrain, boosting, and direct fuel injection systems, both cycles can be feasibly implemented on the same engine platform. In this research study, two valve strategies for achieving a two-stroke cycle in a four-stroke engine have been studied. The first strategy is based on balanced compression and expansion strokes, while the gas exchange is done through two different strokes. The second approach is a novel 2-stroke combustion strategy - here referred to as 2-stroke Miller - which maintains the expansion as achieved in a 4-stroke cycle but suppresses the gas exchange into the compression stroke.

Unified Backwards Facing and Forwards Facing Simulation of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle using MATLAB Simscape

This paper presents the implementation of a vehicle and powertrain model of the parallel hybrid electric vehicle which can be used for several purposes: as a model for estimating fuel consumption, as a model for estimating performance, and as a control model for the hybrid powertrain optimisation. The model is specified as a multi-domain physical model in MATLAB Simscape, which captures the key electrical, mechanical and thermal energy flows in the vehicles. By applying hand crafted boundary conditions, this model can be simulated either in the forwards or backwards direction, and it can easily be simplified as required to address specific control problems. Modelling in the forwards direction, the driver inputs are specified, and the vehicle response is the model output. In the backwards direction, the vehicle velocity as a function of time is the specified input, and the engine torque, and fuel consumption are the model outputs.

More Leaders and Fewer Initiatives: Key Ideas for the Future of Engineering

Panel Discussions held at the SAE World Congress in both 2013 and 2014 observed that a shortage of good quality engineering talent formed a chronic and major challenge. (“Good quality” refers to applicants that would be shortlisted for interview.) While doubts have been expressed in some quarters, the shortage is confirmed by automotive sector employers and the Panel's view was that it was symptomatic of a range of issues, all of which have some bearing on the future of the profession. Initiatives to improve recruitment and retention have had varying degrees of success. Efforts need to be intensified in primary schools where negative perceptions develop and deepen. Schemes like AWIM that operate on a large scale and are designed to supplement school curricula should operate at an international level. Universities represent the entry point into the engineering profession and their role in the recruitment process as well as education and training is crucial.
