EWIS Wiring Insulation Breakdown Testing

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) identifies the minimum requirements for the testing of insulated electrical wiring for on-aircraft, aeronautical and aerospace applications. The testing requirements defined herein, ensure that a wire fault can be found safely when using a high potential voltage tester (hipot). This test is intended to aid in finding a breach in the wire insulation, and not for the identification of the resistance of the insulation. The test method defined herein is limited to equipment which ia able to control and limit the DC output to 1500 VDC maximum. This type of wire dielectric tester is typically designed to trip on current leakage and not necessarily on arc detection. This test method is solely designed to identify gross/large wire insulation damage or degradation. Aerospace Vehicle Wiring, Lessons Learned

This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is limited to the requirements of AS50881 and examines these requirements providing rationale behind them. SAE AS50881 is only applicable to the aircraft electrical wiring and interconnect system (EWIS). Pods and other devices that can be attached to an aircraft that are considered as aircraft equipment design. The AS50881 scope does not include attached devices, but does include the interface between the pod and aircraft wiring. Paragraph 3.3.5 addresses components such as antennas and other similar equipment that was once supplied as GFAE.

Recommended Test Fluids for Electrical Components Used on Aircraft Exterior or for Ground Support Near Aircraft

The purpose of this SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is to provide recommended test fluids for testing of electrical components used on aircraft exterior or for ground support near aircraft. These fluids were selected based on a consolidation of test fluids used by military and commercial sources and on review of national and international component specifications. These recommendations are general guidelines. Safety factors for any unusual testing applications or operating conditions should be given special consideration by the designer. The test fluids provided are intended to be recommendations and are not intended to limit or supersede those recommended by aircraft or ground support equipment manufacturers.

Ultraviolet (UV) Laser Marking Performance of Aerospace Wire Constructions

The purpose of this report is to provide information on the results of ultra violet (UV) laser marking and mark contrast measurement of a wide range of aerospace wire and cable constructions, the specifications for most of which do not state specific requirements for laser markability. The contents of this document are for information and guidance only. Wire and Cable Marking Process, UV Laser

This standard is applicable to the marking of aerospace vehicle electrical wires and cables using ultraviolet (UV) lasers. This standard specifies the process requirements for the implementation of UV laser marking of aerospace electrical wire and cable and fiber optic cable to achieve an acceptable quality mark using equipment designed for UV laser marking of identification codes on aerospace wire and cable. Wiring specified as UV laser markable subject to AS4373 Test Methods for Insulated Electric Wire and which has been marked in accordance with this standard will conform to the requirements of AS50881.

Legibility of Print on Aerospace Wires and Cables

The purpose of this report is to provide recommendations for marking wire and cable insulations to meet legibility requirements. This information is generic and applies to any type of wire marking system, such as an ultraviolet (UV) laser marking system or an inkjet or other ink based wire marking system. This report is limited to the legibility of human-readable characters and does not address bar code or other machine-readable symbols. In this report, the term wire refers to jacketed cables and fiber optic cables in addition to individual wires. This report defines the factors that affect the legibility of markings on wiring. Two generic types of variables affect legibility: stimulus variables and environmental variables. Stimulus variables are those factors involving the mark itself.
