Aircraft that carry crew and/or passengers must pass one or more icing-related standards for certification. Ice protection systems and components play a crucial role in safe aircraft operation. Such systems are usually installed in wings, nacelle intakes, pitot tubes, stabilizers, and propeller and helicopter rotor blades. These safety-critical systems follow a certification requirement per Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) part 23, 25, 27, 29, and others, for the various types of aircraft and rotorcraft as well as engines.

SAE International is inviting global participation in its AeroTech® aerospace and defense technology conference and exhibition, which is for the first time co-located with ASM International’s AeroMat, at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California, March 15 through 17, 2022.
For ADAS and AV applications, the parameters of safe operation will depend largely on the vehicle’s sensor and processing system’s ability to accurately gather and interpret data about the surrounding environment. Thus, clearly defining a safety feature’s intended ODD also highlights required levels of sensor performance.
The Lockheed C-130H Hercules fleet operated by the Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve is getting new Collins Aerospace Systems avionics that will help extend the life of the legacy aircraft by 20 years.
Texas A&M University is putting a human behind the wheel of its autonomous shuttle fleet with a partnership with Designated Driver, a teleoperation technology company and provides remote human guidance to autonomous vehicles. The first use case: overriding the shuttles’ autonomy at four-way intersections.
During a public demonstration, an unmodified production Impossible Aerospace Corporation’s US-1 quadcopter, carrying both a FLIR Duo Pro R thermal camera and HD video transmitter, crossed Nevada’s “playa,” or salt flats. In repeated 72-minute flights, the unmanned aircraft system (UAS) flew with and against prevailing winds, covering distances of 29 and 21 miles, respectively.
Beep Inc., an automated vehicle (AV) distributor based in Orlando, Florida, is partnering with Bestmile SA – a developer of fleet orchestration software. Through the collaboration, Beep will use Bestmile’s software to manage and monitor autonomous shuttle fleets that it sells to fleet owners who operate in low speed environments across the public and private sector.
Uber’s Pittsburgh-based Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) has joined the Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC) to collaborate on the development of best safety practices for automated vehicles (AVs). AVSC member companies like SAE international, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, and now Uber, aim to responsibly evolve technology that would enable widespread AV deployment.
The Center for Automotive Research (CAR) and Velodyne Lidar, Inc. have joined the International Alliance for Mobility Testing & Standardization (IAMTS). Alongside SAE International, the two organizations will serve as as core members of IAMT’s Technical Leadership Committee.
