Potential Analysis of Defossilized Operation of a Heavy-Duty Dual-Fuel Engine Utilizing Dimethyl Carbonate/Methyl Formate as Primary and Poly Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ether as Pilot Fuel

Abstract This study demonstrates the defossilized operation of a heavy-duty port-fuel-injected dual-fuel engine and highlights its potential benefits with minimal retrofitting effort. The investigation focuses on the optical characterization of the in-cylinder processes, ranging from mixture formation, ignition, and combustion, on a fully optically accessible single-cylinder research engine. The article revisits selected operating conditions in a thermodynamic configuration combined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. One approach is to quickly diminish fossil fuel use by retrofitting present engines with decarbonized or defossilized alternatives. As both fuels are oxygenated, a considerable change in the overall ignition limits, air–fuel equivalence ratio, burning rate, and resistance against undesired pre-ignition or knocking is expected, with dire need of characterization.

A Design Optimization Process of Improving the Automotive Subframe Dynamic Stiffness Using Tuned Rubber Mass Damper

Abstract Automotive subframe is a critical chassis component as it connects with the suspension, drive units, and vehicle body. All the vibration from the uneven road profile and drive units are passed through the subframe to the vehicle body. OEMs usually have specific component-level drive point dynamic stiffness (DPDS) requirements for subframe suppliers to achieve their full vehicle NVH goals. Traditionally, the DPDS improvement for subframes welded with multiple stamping pieces is done by thickness and shape optimization. The thickness optimization usually ends up with a huge mass penalty since the stamping panel thickness has to be changed uniformly not locally. Structure shape and section changes normally only work for small improvements due to the layout limitations. Tuned rubber mass damper (TRMD) has been widely used in the automotive industry to improve the vehicle NVH performance thanks to the minimum mass it adds to the original structure.

Hydrogen Injection Position Impact: Experimental Analysis of Central Direct Injection and Side Direct Injection in Engines

Abstract A detailed investigation was carried out on the performance, combustion, and emissions of a single-cylinder direct injection hydrogen spark ignition (SI) engine with either a side-mounted direct injection (SDI) or a centrally installed direct injection (CDI) injector. The first part of the study analyzed the performance and emissions characteristics of CDI and SDI engine operations with different injection timings and pressures. This was followed by comparing the engine’s performance and emissions of the CDI and SDI operations at different engine speeds and relative air-to-fuel ratios (lambda) with the optimized injection pressure and timings. Furthermore, the performance and emission attributes of the hydrogen engine with the CDI and SDI setups were conducted at a fixed λ value of 2.75 across a broad spectrum of engine loads. The study’s main outcome demonstrates that both direct injection systems produced near-zero CO2, CO, and HC emissions.

Comparison of Tabulated and Complex Chemistry Approaches for Ammonia–Diesel Dual-Fuel Combustion Simulation

Abstract Using ammonia as a carbon-free fuel is a promising way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. Due to the challenging fuel properties, like high autoignition temperature, high latent heat of vaporization, and low laminar flame speeds, a dual-fuel combustion process is the most promising way to use ammonia as a fuel in medium-speed engines. Currently, many experimental investigations regarding premixed and diffusive combustion are carried out. A numerical approach has been employed to simulate the complex dual-fuel combustion process to better understand the influences on the diffusive combustion of ammonia ignited by a diesel pilot. The simulation results are validated based on optical investigations conducted in a rapid compression–expansion machine (RCEM). The present work compares a tabulated chemistry simulation approach to complex chemistry-based simulations.

Enhancing Regenerative Energy Capture in Electric Vehicle: Braking Performance through Integral Sliding Mode Control

Abstract This article focuses on the development of an active braking control system tailored for electric vehicles. The essence of this system lies in its ability to regulate the slip coefficient to optimize traction during braking, thereby maximizing energy recuperation. In the context of the simulation on enhancing regenerative energy capture in electric vehicles, the use of integral sliding mode control (ISMC) as an alternative for regulating braking performance can be understood through a comparison of two key output variables in braking control systems: wheel deceleration and wheel slip. Traditionally, wheel deceleration has been a controlled variable in braking systems, and it is still utilized in some anti-lock braking systems (ABS). It can be easily measured using a basic wheel encoder. However, the dynamic performance of wheel deceleration control may suffer when there are rapid changes in the road surface.

Suitability Study of Biofuel Blend for Light Commercial Vehicle Application under Real-World Transient Operating Conditions

Abstract Driving schedule of every vehicle involves transient operation in the form of changing engine speed and load conditions, which are relatively unchanged during steady-state conditions. As well, the results from transient conditions are more likely to reflect the reality. So, the current research article is focused on analyzing the biofuel-like lemon peel oil (LPO) behavior under real-world transient conditions with fuel injection parameter MAP developed from steady-state experiments. At first, engine parameters and response MAPs are developed by using a response surface methodology (RSM)-based multi-objective optimization technique. Then, the vehicle model has been developed by incorporating real-world transient operating conditions. Finally, the developed injection parameters and response MAPs are embedded in the vehicle model to analyze the biofuel behavior under transient operating conditions.

Effect of Shock Absorber Friction on Vehicle Vertical Dynamics

Abstract In order to efficiently predict and investigate a vehicle’s vertical dynamics, it is necessary to consider the suspension component properties holistically. Although the effects of suspension stiffness and damping characteristics on vertical dynamics are widely understood, the impact of suspension friction in various driving scenarios has rarely been studied in both simulation and road tests for several decades. The present study addresses this issue by performing driving tests using a special device that allows a modification of the shock absorber or damper friction, and thus the suspension friction to be modified independently of other suspension parameters. Initially, its correct functioning is verified on a shock absorber test rig. A calibration and application routine is established in order to assign definite additional friction forces at high reproducibility levels.

Application of a Comprehensive Lagrangian–Eulerian Spark-Ignition Model to Different Operating Conditions

Abstract Increasing engine efficiency is essential to reducing emissions, which is a priority for automakers. Unconventional modes such as boosted and highly dilute operation have the potential to increase engine efficiency but suffer from stability concerns and cyclic variability. To aid engineers in designing ignition systems that reduce cyclic variability in such engine operation modes, reliable and accurate spark-ignition models are necessary. In this article, a Lagrangian–Eulerian spark-ignition (LESI) model is used to simulate electrical discharge, spark channel elongation, and ignition in inert or reacting crossflow within a combustion vessel, at different pressures, flow speeds, and dilution rates. First the model formulation is briefly revisited. Then, the experimental and simulations setups are presented.

Water Droplet Collison and Erosion on High-Speed Spinning Wheels

Abstract The water droplet erosion (WDE) on high-speed rotating wheels appears in several engineering fields such as wind turbines, stationary steam turbines, fuel cell turbines, and turbochargers. The main reasons for this phenomenon are the high relative velocity difference between the colliding particles and the rotor, as well as the presence of inadequate material structure and surface parameters. One of the latest challenges in this area is the compressor wheels used in turbochargers, which has a speed up to 300,000 rpm and have typically been made of aluminum alloy for decades, to achieve the lowest possible rotor inertia. However, while in the past this component was only encountered with filtered air, nowadays, due to developments in compliance with tightening emission standards, various fluids also collide with the spinning blades, which can cause mechanical damage.

State of Charge Balancing Control for Multiple Output Dynamically Adjustable Capacity System

Abstract A multiple output dynamically adjustable capacity system (MODACS) is developed to provide multiple voltage output levels while supporting varying power loads by switching multiple battery strings between serial and parallel connections. Each module of the system can service either a low voltage bus by placing its strings in parallel or a high voltage bus with its strings in series. Since MODACS contains several such modules, it can produce multiple voltages simultaneously. By switching which strings and modules service the different output rails and by varying the connection strategy over time, the system can balance the states of charge (SOC) of the strings and modules. A model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is formulated to accomplish this balancing. MODACS operates in various power modes, each of which imposes unique constraints on switching between configurations.

How Drivers Lose Control of the Car

Abstract After a severe lane change, a wind gust, or another disturbance, the driver might be unable to recover the intended motion. Even though this fact is known by any driver, the scientific investigation and testing on this phenomenon is just at its very beginning, as a literature review, focusing on SAE Mobilus® database, reveals. We have used different mathematical models of car and driver for the basic description of car motion after a disturbance. Theoretical topics such as nonlinear dynamics, bifurcations, and global stability analysis had to be tackled. Since accurate mathematical models of drivers are still unavailable, a couple of driving simulators have been used to assess human driving action. Classic unstable motions such as Hopf bifurcations were found. Such bifurcations seem almost disregarded by automotive engineers, but they are very well-known by mathematicians. Other classic unstable motions that have been found are “unstable limit cycles.”

Employing a Model of Computation for Testing and Verifying the Security of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract Testing and verifying the security of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) under cyber-physical attacks is a critical challenge for ensuring their safety and reliability. Proposed in this article is a novel testing framework based on a model of computation that generates scenarios and attacks in a closed-loop manner, while measuring the safety of the unit under testing (UUT), using a verification vector. The framework was applied for testing the performance of two cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) controllers under false data injection (FDI) attacks. Serving as the baseline controller is one of a traditional design, while the proposed controller uses a resilient design that combines a model and learning-based algorithm to detect and mitigate FDI attacks in real-time.

Effect of Turbine Speed Parameter on Exhaust Pulse Energy Matching of an Asymmetric Twin-Scroll Turbocharged Heavy-Duty Engine

Abstract The two-branch exhaust of an asymmetric twin-scroll turbocharged engine are asymmetrically and periodically complicated, which has great impact on turbine matching. In this article, a matching effect of turbine speed parameter on asymmetric twin-scroll turbines based on the exhaust pulse energy weight distribution of a heavy-duty diesel engine was introduced. First, it was built as an asymmetric twin-scroll turbine matching based on exhaust pulse energy distribution. Then, by comparing the average matching point and energy matching points on the corresponding turbine performance map, it is revealed that the turbine speed parameter of energy matching points was a significant deviation from the turbine speed parameter under peak efficiency, which leads to the actual turbine operating efficiency lower than the optimal state.

Influence of Exhaust Aftertreatment System on Powertrain Vibration Behavior

Abstract NVH refinement of commercial vehicles is the key attribute for customer acceptance. Engine and road irregularities are the two major factors responsible for the same. During powertrain isolators’ design alone, the mass and inertia of the powertrain are usually considered, but in practical scenarios, a directly coupled subsystem also disturbs the boundary conditions for design. Due to the upgradation in emission norms, the exhaust aftertreatment system of modern automotive vehicles becomes heavier and more complex. This system is further coupled to the powertrain through a flexible joint or fixed joint, which results in the disturbance of the performance of the isolators. Therefore, to address this, the isolators design study is done by considering a multi-body dynamics model of vehicles with 16 DOF and 22 DOF problems, which is capable to simulate static and dynamic real-life events of vehicles.

Experimental Investigation of a Flexible Airframe Taxiing Over an Uneven Runway for Aircraft Vibration Testing

Abstract The ground vibration test (GVT) is an important phase in a new aircraft development program, or the structural modification of a certified aircraft, to experimentally determine the structural vibrational modes of the aircraft and their modal parameters. These modal parameters are used to validate and correlate the dynamic finite element model of the aircraft to predict potential structural instabilities (such as flutter), assessing the significance of modifications to research vehicles by comparing the modal data before and after the modification and helping to resolve in-flight anomalies. Due to the high cost and the extensive preparations of such tests, a new method of vibration testing called the taxi vibration test (TVT) rooted in operational modal analysis (OMA) was recently proposed and investigated as an alternative method to conventional GVT.

Vehicle Braking Performance Improvement via Electronic Brake Booster

Abstract Throughout the automobile industry, the electronic brake boost technologies have been widely applied to support the expansion of the using range of the driver assist technologies. The electronic brake booster (EBB) supports to precisely operate the brakes as necessary via building up the brake pressure faster than the vacuum brake booster. Therefore, in this article a novel control strategy for the EBB based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) is developed and studied. The configuration of the EBB is established and the system model including the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a two-stage reduction transmission (gears and a ball screw), a servo body, reaction disk, and the hydraulic load are modeled by MATLAB/Simulink. The load-dependent friction has been compensated by using Karnopp friction model. Due to the strong nonlinearity on the EBB components and the load-dependent friction, FLC has been used for the control algorithm.

Research on the Control Strategy for Handling Stability of Electric Power Steering System with Active Front Wheel Steering Function

Abstract Due to the presence of uncertain disturbances in the actual steering system, disturbances in the system may affect the handling stability of the vehicle. Therefore, this article proposes an integrated steering system control strategy with stronger anti-disturbance performance. When disturbances exist in the system, the proposed control strategy effectively reduces the attitude changes during the vehicle steering process. In the upper-level control strategy, a variable transmission ratio curve is designed to coordinate the high-speed handling stability and low-speed steering sensitivity of the vehicle. On this basis, a sideslip angle observer is proposed based on the extended state observation theory, which does not depend on an accurate system model, thus determining the intervention timing of the active front wheel steering system. In the lower-level control strategy, DR-PI/DR-PID controllers are designed for the integrated steering system.
