Introduction to Autonomous Trucking and Platooning Technology

2019-09-24
Vehicle automation and intelligent transportation systems will be the cornerstones of sustainable smart cities of the future. People movers seem to be at the heart of technology development, field trials and on-road testing, and strategic business partnerships when it comes to connectivity and automated driving. Majority of the focus has been on unmanned operation and door-to-door service in urban environments and not on highways. Highways are relatively simpler to handle from an engineering stand-point, but vehicles typically operate at higher speeds, so the cost of accidents is worse.

Introduction to Automated Vehicle Safety Multi-Agent, Functional Safety, and SOTIF

2019-09-09
Fatal accidents involving automated vehicles have made it clear that safety is paramount to their acceptance, testing, verification, validation, and deployment. In fact, safety has been ranked as the number one concern for the acceptance and adoption of automated vehicles, and understandably so, since safety has some of the most complex requirements in the development of such vehicles. However, there are many misconceptions involving safety and the concept of safety as applied to automated vehicles.

The Role of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in Smart Cities

2019-08-15
There is growing interest in the concept of a smart city and how these advanced technologies will improve the quality of living and make a city more attractive to visitors, commerce and industry. This course fills an unmet need for defining and explaining the relationship between connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and smart city transportation. It is apparent that CAVs will achieve the best results when integrated with current and emerging urban infrastructure for transportation. This course addresses such integration from technology, organizational, policy and business model perspectives.

LIDAR and Infrared Cameras for ADAS and Autonomous Sensing

2019-08-06
This two-day seminar examines ADAS and autonomous vehicle technologies that have disrupted the traditional automotive industry with their challenges and potential to increase safety while attempting to optimize the cost of car ownership. LIDAR and Infrared camera sensing are seeing a rapid growth and adoption in the industry. However, the sensor requirements and system architecture options continue to evolve almost every six months. This course will provide the foundation to build on for these two technologies in automotive applications. It will include a demonstration model for LIDAR and Infrared camera.

Accident Reconstruction, the Autonomous Vehicle and ADAS

2019-08-06
After the crash, you need to know if an autonomous or driver assistance system was installed in the vehicle, if it functioned properly, and if it affected the outcome of the accident. Get a detailed look at the rapidly growing field of self-driving vehicles and driver assistance systems. What is available, how does it work, and what will happen in a crash scenario? How does it affect product liability and accident reconstruction? Some auto manufacturers are equipping the majority of their new vehicles with such technology, and it’s important for the forensic engineer to “stay ahead of the curve”.

Introduction to Highly Automated Vehicles

2019-07-22
Every year, the U.S. experiences more than 32,000 traffic deaths and over 3.8 million crash injuries. While the trend in traffic deaths has been downward for the past decade, most of this reduction has been the result of optimizing passive occupant crash protection systems such as seatbelts and airbags. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) now offer the potential to significantly reduce or eliminate most vehicle crashes by perceiving a dangerous situation before the crash has occurred and taking action to avoid or mitigate the crash.

Ethical Considerations for Autonomous Vehicle Technology

This one-day seminar examines autonomous vehicle technology from an ethical lens. Several ethical paradigms are presented as potential critical and necessary lenses to examine the need, rational, impact and potential issues with effective design, commercialization and communication surrounding this technology. Several case studies that examine ethical issues in emergent technology will be used as discussion tools in this interactive workshop with a focus on the social responsibility. An examination of ethical decision making and the use of data for decision making are also key elements of this workshop.
