Effect of Tyre inflation Pressure on Rolling Resistance of Tyre

Rolling resistance, is nothing but the rolling drag, is the force resisting the motion when a body rolls on a surface. It is mainly caused by non-elastic effects; that is,not all the energy needed for deformation of the wheel, roadbed, etc. It is recovered when the pressure is removed, in the form of hysteresis losses and permanent deformation of the tyre surface. So, the rolling resistance contributes to the deformation of roadbed as well as tyre surface of the vehicle. Factors contributing in rolling resistance are tyre inflation pressure, wheel diameter, speed, load on wheel,, surface adhesion, sliding, and relative micro-sliding between the surfaces of contact. In this concerned paper we are significantly working on effect of tyre inflation pressure on rolling resistance and taking all other factors constraint.

Self-Sensing, Lightweight and High Modulus Carbon Nanotube Composites for Improved Efficiency and Safety of Electric Vehicles

Carbon Composites (CFRP) have been touted to be an essential component of future automobiles due to their mechanical properties and lightweight. CFRP has been adopted successfully for secondary and primary structures in Aerospace industry. In Automobiles, they are incorporated in models like the BMW i-series. CFRP suffers from 2 major problems. Delamination of Composites leads to catastrophic and rapid failure which could be dangerous in passenger vehicles. Delamination occurs whenever there is a shock on the composite. Secondly, Composites need regular expensive maintenance to ensure that the material is intact and will not compromise passenger safety. Carbon Nanotubes in composites have shown a substantial increase in delamination resistance. A 0.1wt% addition of HiPCO® Single-walled Carbon Nanotube provides both self-sensing and improved fracture resistance.

MOLD IN COLOR DIAMOND WHITE ASA MATERIAL FOR AUTOMOTIVE EXTERIOR APPLICATION

In this paper, mold in color diamond white ASA material has been explored for front bumper grill, fender arch extension and hinge cover applications. Other than aesthetic requirements, these parts have precise fitment requirement under sun load condition in real world usage profile. Structural durability of the design was validated by virtual engineering. Part design and material combinations with better tooling design iterations were analysed by using mold flow analysis. Complete product performances were validated for predefined key test metrics such as structural durability, thermal aging, cold impact, scratch resistance, and weathering criteria. This part met required specification. This mold in color ASA material-based parts has various benefits such as environmentally friendly manufacturing by eliminating environmental issues of coating, easily recycled, and faster part production because intended color achieved in one step during molding.

Due to the increase in the number of features, the overall weight of power distribution unit increases and thereby affecting the overall system cost and fuel economy. The scope of this document is to scale down the weight and space of the power distribution unit without compromising with the current performance. Methodology Miniaturization involves replacing the mini fuses and J-case fuses with LP mini and LP J-case fuses respectively. The transition doesn’t involve any tooling modification and hence saves the tooling cost.

Analysis Of GaN Based BLDC Motor Drive For Automotive Application

Objective Automotive sector is rapidly moving towards electric vehicle. BLDC motor is gaining popularity in the field of electric vehicle due to its high torque to weight ratio and simple control. In this paper we will focus on Switching loss characterization of 3 kW GaN based BLDC drive for electric vehicle. To improve efficiency of drive gallium-nitride based power transistor is used instead of Si MOSFET. GaN devices enable the design of inverter at higher frequencies with improved power density and efficiency as compared to traditional Si MOSFETs. Methodology In this paper commercially available GaN devices compared with Si MOSFETs. The power devices, which are selected for the performance comparison, are EPC2022 GaN by EPC, GS61008P GaN by Gan System and SiDR668DP Si MOSFET by Vishay. The Switching losses analytically predicted in MATHCAD tool and then compared with SPICE simulation losses. Double pulse test circuit is used to find out power losses of power transistors.

Design analysis of a retrofit system for an electric two wheeler

Two wheelers are the major mode of single transport in the metros of India. They contribute about 70 % of the auto market unit wise. Also it is proved from the research that for per unit energy consumption they contribute more to the environment emission. Conventional IC engine based energy supply unit can be replaced with an electric DC motor with chargeable battery as the energy source for the two wheelers present in the market. In the current research, engine is replaced with the motor, batteries and controller. The above system is placed on the space emptied by the conventional engine, The design developed is tested on different gradients for identifying the motor torque for minimum and maximum resistances available on the road. The paper provides an insight on the of the torque requirements based on variable resistances required for two wheelers. Also the system will be used as a retrofit for the existing IC engine bikes to be converted in electric bikes.

Thermal management and insulation are extremely important and highly demanding in BSVI, RDE and Non-IC engine operating vehicles. Passenger vehicle and Commercial vehicle exhaust systems are facing multiple challenges such as packaging constraints, weight reduction andthermalmanagement requirements.Frugal engineering is mandatory to develop heat shield in the exhaust system with minimum heat loss. The focus of the paper is to design, develop and validate heat shield products with different variables such as design gap, insulation material, sheet metal thickness and manufacturing processes. 1D and 3D computational simulations are performed with different gaps from 3 mm to 14 mm are considered.

Calculation of Drag Torque Losses by Component of a Transfer Case

In recent decades, fuel economy has become a key indicator of an automaker social responsibility and a market differentiation factor, and ultimately it is regulated by government agencies such as EPA through CO2 emissions compliance tests. The light pick-up truck and SUV production share has been increasing in the last few years, being the 4-wheel drive capability one of the main features that the customers look for. Within the 4-wheel drive system, the transfer case has a significant impact to both torque transfer efficiency and parasitic losses. The scope of this paper is to better understand the parasitic losses of a transfer case by the quantification of its individual drag losses by component. At product development phase, one measurement of interest is the system level spin loss which has a target value defined by the automakers, and contribution by component is often neglected if the system has the expected performance.

The ground mobile robotics study is structured on the two pivotal members namely Sensor perception and Motion planning. Sensor perception or Exteroception comprises the ability of measurement of the layout of environment relative to vehicle’s frame of reference which is a necessity for the implementation of safe navigation towards the goal destination in an unstructured environment. Environment scanning has played a significant role in mobile robots application to investigate the unexplored environment in the sector of defence while transporting and handling material in warehouse and hospitals. Motion Planning is a conjunction of analysing the sensor’s information about the local frame and global map while being able to plan the route from starting point to the target destination. In this paper, a 3600 2-D LiDAR is used to capture the spatial information of the surrounding, the scanning results are presented in a local and global map.

The automotive industries around the globe is undergoing massive transformation towards technological capability to meet stringent legislative norms on fuel economy and emission. It is a challenging process to meet the regulatory standards without compromising on performance. The torque delivered by the engine at wide open throttle position in a transient condition from low idle to higher engine rpm is known as dynamic torque, which always need not to follow the defined FTP curve. The engine dynamic torque plays a crucial part in performance benchmarking of a vehicle as a visualization parameter to set the project targets. There exist a few methodologies to measure the engine brake torque like direct measurement using torque transducer which adds complexity and cost to the vehicle, ECU measured torque based on amount of fuel injection and empirical calculation using known engine speed.

The need for eco-friendly materials is recently increasing in the automobile and aerospace sectors. Material selection for automobile components is influenced by various factors such as cost, weight and strength. Natural fibers offers various advantages over conventional materials such as environmental friendly, easily available, recyclable and higher specific strength. Among the natural fibers Sisal and Kenaf fibers are selected for present study due to their good mechanical properties and availability. Kenaf fibers have great potential to be used as construction and automotive materials due to their long fibers which are derived from the bast. Sisal fibers do not absorb moisture and posses good impact, sound absorbing properties and high fire resistance properties. Epoxy LY556 is selected as matrix material to bind the combination of these two natural fibers due to its high temperature resistance and adherence to reinforcements.

Machinability and parametric optimization of Inconel 600 using Taguchi-Desirability analysis under dry environment

Inconel 600 is a face-centered cubic structure and nickel-chromium alloy. Alloy 600 has good resistance to oxidation, corrosion resistant, excellent mechanical properties and good creep rupture strength at higher temperature. Alloy 600 is used in chemical and food processing, heat treating, phenol condensers, soap manufacture, vegetable, and fatty acid vessels. In this context, the present paper investigates the machinability characteristics of Alloy 600 under dry environment. Also, the parametric effect of cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth on the force, surface roughness and tool wear are carried out using 3-Dimensional surface and 1-Dimensional plots. The optimal parameters are determined systematically based on Taguchi-desirability analysis with turned with TiAlN coated carbide insert. From the graphical analysis of collected data, the low rate of feed and moderate cutting for roughness and cutting force and average feed rate for tool wear with low cutting depth.

Natural and artificial weathering of automotive leather, leatherette and textile

This paper presents the natural and artificial weathering behavior of leather, leatherette and textiles used for automotive seat applications. The objective of this study was to understand the UV resistance under periodic intervals and to understand the natural to artificial weathering correlation. The natural weathering under glass exposure was carried out as per ASTM G 24 and artificial weathering as per SAE J2412. The material was observed for color retention, texture retention, flexibility retention and any other changes in the construction. The natural weathering data for every 15 days were recorded, and artificial weathering for every 150 hours were recorded. Light and dark color materials were tested to understand the effect of color and UV light resistance as well as various textures were studied to understand the effect of various texture and texture retention under UV. The study was also carried out at two different period in a year and the data were recorded.

In the present study the fabrication of joints between the nickel base alloys and steels of various grades have been under taken, joining of these metals has assumed new importance by virtue of their widespread in nuclear and aerospace applications. Such joints provide excellent strength, oxidation and corrosion resistance. This paper deals with the study of weldability, and mechanical properties of weld joints of two different alloys such as nickel based alloy- monel 400 and austenitic stainless steel AISI 321. The joining of the similar and dissimilar metals is carried out by GTAW process by employing two different types of filler rods such as SS321 and ERNiCrMo-3.

CFD Simulation on turbulent forced convection of CuO-Water Nanofluids in a horizontal circular pipe

The present study provides a detailed investigation on simulation of Copper oxide nanofluids in a simple horizontal circular pipe considering turbulent forced convection, with a constant heat flux boundary condition. The simulation is carried out using three different models available in fluent viz. Newtonian single phase model, Eulerian-mixture and Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase models. The Reynold number of the flow is varied along with volume concentration of nanoparticles varying from low to high. Nanofluids rheology is studied by considering standard k-ε two equation turbulence model with enhanced wall treatment considering appropriate wall y+ values. The effective temperature dependent thermo-physical properties for nanofluids were seized from the literatures. The results from the simulation clearly showed an increase in the heat transfer characteristics with the addition of nanofluids compared to that of base fluid alone.

Tensile and Fatigue behavior of shallow cryogenically treated En19 alloy steel

Wear, tensile and axial fatigue tests were conducted on shallow cryogenically treated En19 medium carbon alloy steel to investigate its mechanical behavior. The test samples are conventionally heat treated then oil quenched at 34 ˚C. Followed by the samples were kept under shallow cryogenic treatment to -80˚C for 12 hours using liquid nitrogen. Then the samples were tempered in a muffle furnace to relieve the induced residual stresses. Wear, Tensile and axial fatigue test was carried out on both treated and non-treated samples to measure its wear resistance, tensile strength and fatigue behavior respectively. Microscopic examination also done using scanning electron microscope to compare the effect of shallow cryogenic treatment on its microstructure. The results exposed that there is a reduction in the tensile strength and fatigue life of shallow cryogenically treated samples over base metal and improved wear resistance.

Amelioration of modular mobility by adopting split cell solar panel cleaning and cooling therof

In photovoltaic system the efficiency of solar cells is determined in combination with latitude and climate. The electricity generation in photovoltaic cell is more in the morning time than in the afternoon time. This is due to the fact that an increase in solar cell temperature leads to a decrease in efficiency of the solar panel. This work aims to provide necessary cooling to the solar panel for favourable output during noon time. Normally electrical modular vehicles use non-split cell solar panels. In order to increase the efficiency, we are using split cell solar panel as it increases voltage by halving the size of the silicon chips. Thus, halving the cells results in increasing efficiency and lowering the operation temperature. The solar panel should be maintained at a particular temperature by adopting sprinkling of water method in solar panel for hybrid vehicles.

The favourable mechanical properties of Composite materials are excellent stiffness/weight and strength/weight ratios, easy formability and corrosion resistance. The application of composites in structural components is still limited by the difficulty in predicting their service lives. The objective of this research paper is to develop and evaluate damage initiation or delamination onset and growth in a C-C composite 8 layered pre-preg material 3D laminate model (dimension 25x3.4x85mm and ply thickness 1mm) under various loading conditions for two cases, one without crack and another with crack using ANSYS Autodyne tool subjected to a uni-axial load of 40N at the free end. Mapped quadrilaterals mesh is generated with 2610 nodes and 1792 elements. Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) formulations are more powerful than Fracture Mechanics approaches because they allow the prediction of both initiation and crack propagation.

Assessment of tribo meter study of 20MnCr5 alloy steel under case hardened and shot peened condition

This research is constrained to study the strength and wear resistance of 20MnCr5 (SAE 5120) alloy steel under monolithic, case hardened and case hardened with shot peening processing condition. Improve the hardness of the material by enhancing the core and surface strength of case hardened with shot peened sample. The principle goal of this proposed work is to conduct the tribo meter test for the three test samples by differing the load of 5, 10, 15 and 20N and sliding speed of 290,580,870 rpm respectively. The impact on tribo meter process parameters on wear rate and co-efficient of friction be calculated and recorded for this study. Less wear rate and nominal co-efficient of friction was observed for case hardened with shot peened sample. Load and sliding distance increases wear rate decreases and co-efficient of friction increases for all the tested samples due to oxide layer formation.

Design Analysis and 3d Printing Of Non-Pneumatic Tyre

The major concern when implementing manoeuvres are acceleration, braking and steering for the safety control which ultimately depends on the road and tire surface friction. To withstand the vertical loads and maintain good traction with contact surface pneumatic tyres with high volume of pressurised air are required. To improve the comfort, handling and grip with low unsprung mass, non-pneumatic tyres are needed which are not reinforced with air pressure. The decreased effect of rolling resistance, added cushioning effect and better cellular shear band design increased the performance level than pneumatic tyres. Here, air is replaced by poly-composite spokes that eliminates the possibility of tyre going flat. This paper mainly discusses the environmental impact and stability issues of conventional pneumatic tyres and also focuses on the various possible design and components of an airless tyre.
