FRP Composite Battery Carriers for Commercial Vehicles

2024-04-09
2024-01-2431
The current battery carrier for commercial vehicles is made of steel and is designed to hold two batteries weighing approximately 80 kg to 100 kg. However, this battery carrier faces several issues including corrosion, chemical reactivity, high maintenance requirements and its heavy weight. To tackle these challenges, a fiber-reinforced composite battery carrier is designed and developed specifically for commercial vehicles. The objective is to identify a solution that can meet the performance requirements of both static and dynamic loading, thereby reducing the overall weight. The proposed composite battery carrier offers a lightweight design, requires minimal maintenance, possesses high tensile strength and stiffness and is corrosion and chemical resistant. Furthermore, it provides the flexibility to integrate battery cover locking arrangements for added convenience and security.

Analyzing Mechanical Behaviour of Aluminium Alloy Composites Reinforced with Ceramics

2024-02-23
2023-01-5110
Aluminium composites are remarkably used in automotive, aerospace, and agricultural sectors because of their lightweight with definable mechanical properties. The stir casting route was followed to fabricate cylindrical samples with base aluminium alloy LM4, LM4/SiC, LM4/Al2O3, and LM4/SiC/Al2O3. The tensile strength, compressive strength, hardness, and micro-structural analysis were performed on samples and Finite element analysis (FEA) was adopted to predict the failure modes of composites. The composites experimental results were found to be in line with the FEA results, however, the LM4/SiC/Al2O3 revealed better results on the mechanical properties when compared with other composite configurations. The mechanical properties improvement like hardness 5%-11%, tensile strength 10.26%-20.67%, compressive strength 15.19% - 32.58% and 71.52 - 82.1% reduction in dimension have been achieved in LM4/SiC/Al2O3 composite comparing to base metal.

Optimization of Dual Extrusion Fused Filament Fabrication Process Parameters for 3D Printed Nylon-Reinforced Composites: Pathway to Mobile and Transportation Revolution

2023-11-14
Abstract Nylon polymer with an optimal blend of Kevlar, fiberglass, and high-speed, high temperature (HSHT) Fiberglass offers improved characteristics such as flexural strength, wear resistance, electrical insulation, shock absorption, and a low friction coefficient. For this reason, the polymer composite manufactured by combining HSHT, Kevlar, and fiberglass with nylon as base material will expand the uses of nylon in the aerospace, automotive, and other industrial applications related to ergonomic tools, assembly trays, and so forth. The proposed work was carried out to investigate the continuous fiber reinforcement (CFR) in nylon polymer using a dual extrusion system. Twenty experimental runs were designed using a face-centered central composite design (FCCD) approach to analyze the influence of significant factors such as reinforcement material, infill pattern, and fiber angle on the fabricated specimen as per American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards.

J2030
This SAE Standard encompasses connectors between two cables or between a cable and an electrical component and focuses on the connectors external to the electrical component. This document provides environmental test requirements and acceptance criteria for the application of connectors for direct current electrical systems of 50 V or less in the majority of heavy-duty applications typically used in off-highway machinery. Severe applications can require higher test levels, or field-testing on the intended application.

2020-01-5213
This paper clarified the dynamic impact of automated bus on asphalt pavement by taking an innovative bus using automation technology as a case study. Firstly, main distresses caused by automated bus on roads were investigated. On this basis, a three-dimensional finite element model that considers the vehicle type and driving conditions of automatic bus was established.

Durability Tests of Gaskets in Biofuels Environment

2020-09-15
2020-01-2138
The production of biofuels to means of transport allows the additional development and the full maintenance of the agricultural sector. The biofuel of II generation may be produced with usage of waste fats and oils. That biofuel is total renewable source of energy. The properties of tested new biofuels were described. Their influence on pipes and especially gaskets and gasket materials during durability tests was determined. Gasket materials were tested in accordance with DIN 28090-3: 2014-11 and DIN28091-2. During 1000 hours of tests at 353 K, the weight loss of the biofuel and the change in elongation (tensile stress) of the flange bolts were measured. Fuel leakage rate was calculated. The gaskets were checked and no delamination was observed. The value of volatile biofuels emission after 1000 hours of testing was less than allowed in DIN Standard. Fuel leakage rate was also lower too.

Realistic Correlation of Damage Estimate in Axle Housing of Commercial Vehicles Using Road Load Data with Bench Testing Results and Failure Analysis to Overcome Hot Forming Losses

2020-09-14
Abstract The present work deals with the damage life correlation of vehicle-level testing results of an axle housing for different road load conditions with the accelerated bench testing experiment results to reduce product development time. Also failure analysis is carried out to overcome the mechanical strength losses caused by the hot forming process during the manufacturing of housings. Commercial vehicle torture test tracks are built to reflect the forces similar to vehicle usage conditions from lighter to severe loadings. Strain data and calibrated force values are captured at the critical loading points in the axle for one cycle, at actual vehicle-driven speeds, to reflect the accelerated load values on five different track conditions. Damages estimation carried out based on the road loads reflects there will be no failure of axle housings till the acceptance of 120 repeats in different track combinations.

Auxiliary Two-Conductor Electrical Power Connector for Truck-Trailer High-Power Jumper Cable

2019-08-20
CURRENT
J3082_201908
This SAE Standard provides the minimum requirements for high-power, two-conductor jumper cable plug and receptacle for truck-trailer jumper cable systems. It includes the test procedures, design, and performance requirements. This document covers receptacles rated 12 VDC nominal and at more than 30 A (amperes) up to and including 150 A, and is intended for a single circuit with one power conductor and one common return conductor. Single-conductor high-current connectors are not recommended for future designs because of inadequate ground return through fifth wheel/king pin. Cable size selection is to be made by the vehicle OEM for specific applications and the specific voltage drop requirements of those applications.
