Head injuries are the main source of road fatalities in when a pedestrian is involved in an accident with the vehicle. The frontal part of vehicle such as engine hood, lower-windshield area and A-pillars are the possible location of head impact in such accidents. The head impact with hard points located in these areas result in the fatal head injuries. The effect of impact can be reduced by using the deployable pedestrian protection systems (DPPS) such as hood-lifters and windshield airbag in the vehicle. The study shows how these systems are effective in reducing the fatalities in pedestrian accidents and how to evaluate the performance of these deployable systems.

In high speed race cars, aerodynamics is an important aspect for determining performance and stability of vehicle. It is mainly influenced by front and rear wings. Active aerodynamics consist of any type of movable wing element that change their position based on operating conditions of the vehicle to have better performance and handling. In this work, front and rear wings are designed for race car prototype of race car. The high down force aerofoil profiles have been used for design of front and rear wing. The first aerodynamic analysis has been performed on baseline model without wings using CFD tool. For investigation, parameters considered are angle of attack in the range of 0-18˚ for front as well as rear wing at different test speeds of 60, 80, 100 and 120 kmph. The simulation is carried out by using ANSYS Fluent. The simulation results show significant improvement in vehicle performance and handling parameters.

Telescopic Rear Wiper Arm with Cam and Roller Mechanism for Increased Wiping Area

2019-11-21
2019-28-2407
All round visibility is critical for safety of vehicle and road users. A vehicle must be designed in such a way that the driver encounters minimal hindrance for visibility of vehicle surroundings. This is even more essential during poor visibility conditions like during rain, snow, heavy fog etc. At present, wiper systems play an essential role in providing better visibility. There are other technological aides like cameras, sensors etc., but they must be considered as secondary systems, the must not be relied upon. Current wiper systems for front windscreen are very efficient, in terms of wiping area. But the wiper systems for rear windscreen are starkly opposite. The rear wiper arm length is very low, mainly due to low height of rear windscreen. This combined with the motion of wiper arm in an arc, results in low wiping area, leading to poor visibility through rear mirror. This paper addresses this problem with a simple solution - Telescopic Wiper Arm with Cam and Roller Mechanism.

2019-11-21
2019-28-2459
In this paper, we will detect and track vehicles on a video stream and count those going through a defined line and to ultimately give an idea of what the real-time on street situation is across the road network. Our major objective is to optimize the delay in transit of vehicles in odd hours of the day. It uses YOLO object detection technique to detect objects on each of the video frames And SORT (Simple Online and Realtime Tracking algorithm) to track those objects over different frames. Once the objects are detected and tracked over different frames a simple mathematical calculation is applied to count the intersections between the vehicles previous and current frame positions with a defined line. At present, the traffic control systems in India, lack intelligence and act as an open-loop control system, with no feedback or sensing network. Present technologies use Inductive loops and sensors to detect the number of vehicles passing by.

2019-11-21
2019-28-2475
To control air pollution in urban areas and to reduce carbon print in the cities, nowadays EV’s are preferred over IC engine vehicles. Earlier Electric vehicles used DC motor and Induction motors. But Brushless Permanent Magnet motors are preferred over Induction motor for EV’s due to their High Torque density, high-power density and highly efficiency. Prevalent Electric vehicles today have Brushless DC motors. Compared to BLDC, PMSM motor have smoother control and negligible torque ripplesThus, PMSM motor is preferred over BLDC for Electric Vehicle, because of its sinusoidal back emf which results in smoother control, and results into smoother and more comfortable driving experience to users. Methodology Sensor based field-oriented control (FOC) is implemented in 48 V 5kW Interior PMSM motor. . To start the Synchronous motor initial position of the rotor magnetic field should be known.

Optimization of the critical parameters affecting the fuel lid performance

2019-11-21
2019-28-2413
Fuel lid is one of the parts which are mostly operated mechanically by the end user while filling the fuel. Therefore part design should be done in such a manner that it can be operated smoothly without any hassles. The conventional steel fuel filler doors are of two types: Three-piece type fuel filler doors also known as the dog-leg type and two-piece type fuel filler doors also known as the butterfly type. Both types of fuel filler doors have a pin that acts as a rotational hinge axis about which the fuel filler door opens and closes. Depending on the styling and shape of the side body outer, fuel lid type is decided. In the current study, dog-leg type fuel lid is considered. The factors that primarily affect the opening-closing performance are the weight of fuel lid, hinge axis, and the friction at the hinge area. The orientation of the hinge axis is derived from the profile of the side body outer panel. The fuel lid weight and hinge axis are decided in the initial design stage.

Study on effect of HVAC Air Flow Distribution on Windows Fogging

2019-11-21
2019-28-2414
Windshield & Windows fogging up in cars has long been a topic of interest & concern. Lot of research has already been put into Front/Rear windshield fogging up issue and, Defrosters, Heated Windshields have been designed to remove the fog effectively. However, Windows Fogging up is still one of the major concerns faced while driving, as it obscures the drivers' field of vision and raises safety concerns. Windows fogging up is a phenomenon in which Moisture is condensed on the glass of the window. It is classified into two categories - Inside Fogging and Outside Fogging. When Ambient temperature is lower than the cabin temperature, the moisture is condensed on the inside surface of the glass. In this case the moisture is added inside the cabin by the occupants when they exhale air. Similarly when the Cabin temperature is lower than the ambient temperature, the moisture from atmosphere is condensed on the outer surface of the glass.

Model Based Design of Chassis-Frame with MATLAB

2019-11-21
2019-28-2429
In the current commercial vehicles market, ride-comfort and handling are crucial parameters for the customer and end user. There are various aspects which determine the vehicle behaviour. One of aspects is the structural rigidity of the vehicle, which has its own effect on vehicle dynamics. To meet the required stiffness of the main structural component of the vehicle i.e. chassis frame, FEA analysis has to be done in current methodology. The number of iterations have to be done to build an appropriate model with low weight, which can meet the design requirements. At first, conceptual design mock-up unit is to be developed then FEA (CAE) analysis to be done on it. If any design criteria are not met, then this cycle repeats again until it fulfils the required stiffness. Today, the direct stiffness procedure is the basic principle of almost every FEA software package.

In-Vehicle Directional Audio Streaming

2019-11-21
2019-28-2448
In-Vehicle Infotainment has evolved greatly over years from a simple tuner based radio with a small LED display to a complex system with highly intelligent interactive HMI which can mirror the smart phone. The full-fledged entertainment features like watching videos are restricted to only rear passengers. In drive mode, drivers are limited with access to only audio to avoid driver distraction. Rear passengers and drivers are classified into different audio zones. Each of the rear passengers are equipped with headsets so that audio merging with driver zone can be avoided. This leads to passenger discomfort, as many passengers would not prefer to hook up with headset all the time. Now the automotive world is envisioned to reach fully autonomous mode where there is no driver and every passenger is interested to listen to music/video of diverse interest. The audio zones in autonomous car need not be zonified or linear. Circular audio zone can also be a good choice for autonomous cars.
