FAA Part 21 Certification Procedures for Products and Parts

2019-11-11
Part 21 is the FAA regulation that provides the regulatory framework to conduct certification of products and parts. This includes the engineering, airworthiness, production and quality systems. The aerospace industry is hinged around compliance with Part 21; however, comprehension of Part 21 and its role in civil certification is challenging. This course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the processes that encompass aircraft certification, including compliance with FARs, certification procedures and post certification responsibilities.

AS13003 Measurement System Analysis (MSA) Requirements for Aerospace Engine Supplier Quality

2019-10-10
AS 13003:2015 stipulates requirements to establish an acceptable measurement system (for variable and attribute features) for use on aerospace engines parts and assemblies.  Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) is used to evaluate and improve measurement systems in the workplace because it evaluates the test method, measuring instruments, and the process of acquiring measurements. The Aerospace Engine Supplier Quality (AESQ) Strategy Group published AS13003 to define the minimum requirements for conducting MSA for variable attribute assessment on characteristics as defined on the drawing specification.

Introduction to Cyber Security for Commercial Aviation

2019-09-26
Despite the advantages of electronic flight bags (EFB), passenger entertainment and email access during flights, and the ability to access aircraft repair manuals electronically, computer interconnectivity throughout aviation has opened the aviation sector to cyber-attacks that could impact flights, data, and safety. This two-day seminar is intended to introduce aviation professionals to the need to implement cyber security throughout commercial aviation including the supply chain.

Investigation into the benefits of implementing a fully integrated MRO Software system in Airlines Maintenance and Engineering

2019-09-16
2019-01-1908
Case studies of various MRO organizations were researched in order to gain a better understanding of the business procedures used in each department of an aircraft maintenance company. The software systems available to aid business processes were researched to understand the computer processes, functions and operational requirements of these software programs. The planning and scheduling of inventory and manpower resources is complex and requires various parameters to be computed by the software systems in order to adequately plan the necessary aircraft maintenance resources. Case studies of aircraft maintenance companies that previously implemented integrated IT software solutions to control and monitor department functions were researched to identify and understand the various problems encountered by these companies during the software implementation phase.

Principled Negotiation

2019-08-29
This highly interactive workshop focuses training on negotiation strategy and skills. This is not the manipulative, win-lose negotiation approach frequently taught today, where the winner eventually spends time and effort protecting his negotiated advantage against erosion, while the loser continually exploits loopholes and shortcuts to recover lost ground. Traditional negotiation is a wary dance based on mistrust, the true cost of which is lost in quality and brain fatigue - usually for someone other than the negotiator - over the life of the agreement.

Exploration of Cavitation-suppressing Orifice Designs for a Heavy-duty Diesel Injector Operating with Straight-Run Gasoline

2019-08-15
2019-24-0126
The occurrence of cavitation inside injectors is generally undesirable since it can cause material erosion and result in deviations from the expected operating conditions and performance. Previous numerical work employing an injector geometry measured with x-ray diagnostics and operating with a high-volatility straight-run gasoline has shown that: (1) most of the cavitation is generally observed at low needle lifts, (2) needle motion is responsible for asymmetric structures in the internal flow as well as large pressure and velocity gradients that trigger phase transition at the orifice inlets, and (3) cavitation affects the injector discharge coefficient and distribution of injected fuel. To explore the potential for material damage within the injector orifices due to cavitation cloud collapse, the cavitation-induced erosion risk assessment (CIERA) tool has been applied for the first time to the realistic geometry of a heavy-duty injector using the CONVERGE software.

Development of a hybrid power unit for Formula SAE application: ICE CFD-1D optimization and vehicle lap simulation

2019-08-15
2019-24-0200
The paper reviews the CFD optimization of a motorcycle engine, modified for the installation in a hybrid powertrain of a Formula SAE car. In a parallel paper [Development of a hybrid power unit for Formula SAE application: packaging optimization and thermo-mechanical design of the electric motor case], the choice of the donor engine (Ducati 959 “Panigale”) is thoroughly discussed, along with all the hardware modifications oriented to minimize the new powertrain dimensions, weight and cost, and guarantee the mechanical reliability. In the current paper, the attention is focused on two main topics: 1) CFD-1D tuning of the modified Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), in order to comply with the Formula SAE regulations, as well as to maximize the power output; 2) Simulation of the vehicle in racing conditions, comparison between a conventional and a hybrid powertrain

Common Training for DPRV Personnel

2019-07-02
**Delivery Language is English unless noted otherwise with the date and location** In the aerospace industry, delegated product release is a process whereby a supplier has been provided the authority to act on behalf of a delegating organization to verify and release products without additional oversight from that delegating organization. Currently, each of these delegating organizations manages and conducts a unique training program for individuals responsible for their product release overcheck process. For suppliers producing products for multiple delegating organizations, each must then manage the multiple training requirements.
