Automated Park and Charge: Concept and Energy Demand Calculation

In this paper we are presenting the concept of automated park and charge functions in different use scenarios. The main scenario is automated park and charge in production and the other use scenario is within automated valet parking in parking garages. The automated park and charge in production is developed within the scope of the publicly funded project E-Self. The central aim of the project is the development and integration of automated driving at the end-of-line in the production at Ford Motor Company's manufacturing plant in Cologne. The driving function thereby is mostly based upon automated valet driving with an infrastructure based perception and action planning. Especially for electric vehicles the state of charge of the battery is critical, since energy is needed for all testing and driving operations at end-of-line.

Software-supported Processes for Aerodynamic Homologation of Vehicles

Homologation is an important process in vehicle development and aerodynamics a main data contributor. The process is heavily interconnected: Production planning defines the available assemblies. Construction defines their parts and features. Sales defines the assemblies offered in different markets, where Legislation defines the rules applicable to homologation. Control engineers define the behavior of active, aerodynamically relevant components. Wind tunnels are the main test tool for the homologation, accompanied by surface-area measurement systems. Mechanics support these test operations. The prototype management provides test vehicles, while parts come from various production and prototyping sources and are stored and commissioned by logistics. Several phases of this complex process share the same context: Production timelines for assemblies and parts for each chassis-engine package define which drag coefficients or drag coefficient contributions shall be determined.

The modern automotive industry is facing challenges of ever-increasing complexity in the electrified powertrain era. On-board diagnostic (OBD) systems must be thoroughly validated and calibrated through many iterations to function effectively and meet the regulation standards. Their development and design process are more complex when prototype hardware is not available and therefore virtual testing is a prominent solution, including Software-in-the-loop (SiL) and Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. Virtual prototype testing relying on real-time simulation models is necessary to design and test new era’s OBD systems quickly and in scale. The new fuel cell powertrain involves new and preciously unexplored fail modes. To make the system robust, simulations are required to be carried out to identify different fails.

Frequency Response Analysis of Fully Trimmed Models using Compressed Reduced Impedance Matrix Methodology

As vibration and noise regulations become more stringent, numerical models need to incorporate more detailed damping treatments. Commercial frameworks, such as Nastran and Actran, allow the representation of trim components as frequency-dependent reduced impedance matrices (RIM) in frequency response analysis of fully trimmed models. The RIM is versatile enough to couple the trims to modal-based or physical components. If physical, the trim components are reduced on the physical coupling degrees of freedom (DOFs) for each connected interface. If modal, the RIMs are projected on the eigenmodes of the connected component. While a model size reduction is achieved compared to the original model, most numerical models possess an extensive number of interfaces DOFs, either modal or physical, leading to large dense RIM which triggers substantial memory and disk storage.

Broadband active noise control algorithms require high-performance so multi-channel control to ensure high performance, which results in very high computational power and expensive DSP. When the control filter update part need a huge computational power of the algorithm is separated and calculated by the server, it is possible to reduce cost by using a low-cost DSP in a local vehicle, and a performance improvement algorithm requiring a high computational power can be applied to the server. In order to achieve the above goal, this study analyzed the maximum delay time when communication speed is low and studied response measures to ensure data integrity at the receiving location considering situations where communication speed delay and data errors occur.

Development of a Hybrid-Electric Medium-HD Demonstrator Vehicle with a Pent-Roof SI Natural Gas Engine

In response to global climate change, there is a widespread push to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. For the difficult to decarbonize heavy-duty (HD) vehicle sector, lower carbon intensity fuels can offer a low-cost, near-term solution for CO2 reduction. The use of natural gas can provide such an alternative for HD vehicles while the increasing availability of renewable natural gas affords the opportunity for much deeper reductions in net-CO2 emissions. With this in consideration, the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory launched the Natural Gas Vehicle Research and Development Project to stimulate advancements in technology and availability of natural gas vehicles. As part of this program, Southwest Research Institute developed a hybrid-electric medium-HD vehicle (class 6) to demonstrate a substantial CO2 reduction over the baseline diesel vehicle and ultra-low NOx emissions.

Artificial Neural Network for Airborne Noise Prediction of a Diesel Engine

The engine acoustic character has always represented the product DNA, owing to its strong correlation with in-cylinder pressure gradient, components design and perceived quality. Best practice for engine acoustic characterization requires the employment of a hemi-anechoic chamber, a significant number of sensors and special acoustic insulation for engine ancillaries and transmission. This process is highly demanding in terms of cost and time due to multiple engine working points to be tested and consequent data post-processing. Since Neural Networks potentially predicting capabilities are apparently un-exploited in this research field, the following paper provides a tool able to acoustically estimate engine performance, processing system inputs (e.g. Injected Fuel, Rail Pressure) thanks to the employment of Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP, a feed forward Network working in stationary points).

Velocity Estimation of a Descending Spacecraft in Atmosphereless Environment using Deep Learning

Landing of spacecraft on Lunar or Martian surfaces is the last and critical step in inter planetary space missions. The atmosphere on earth is thick enough to slow down the craft but Moon or Mars does not provide a similar atmosphere. Moreover, other factors such as lunar dust, availability of precise onboard navigational aids etc would impact decision making. Soft landing meaning controlling the velocity of the craft from over 6000km/h to zero. If the craft’s velocity is not controlled, it might crash. Various onboard sensors and onboard computing power play a critical role in estimating and hence controlling the velocity, in the absence of GPS-like navigational aids. In this paper, an attempt is made using visual onboard sensor to estimate the velocity of the object. The precise estimation of an object's velocity is a vital component in the trajectory planning of space vehicles, particularly those designed for descent onto lunar or Martian terrains, such as orbiters or landers.

Aerospace Vehicle Motion Simulation with Real-Time Telemetry Data

In any aerospace mission, after the vehicle has taken off, the visual is lost and the information about its current state is only through the sensor data telemetered in real-time. Very often, this data is difficult to perceive and analyze. In such cases, a 3D, near to real representation of the data can immensely improve the understanding of the current state of mission and can aid in real-time decision making if possible. Generally, any aerospace vehicle carries onboard an inertial system along with other sensors, which measures the position and attitude of the vehicle. This data is communicated to ground station. The received telemetry data is encoded as bytes and sent as packets through the network using the Universal Datagram Protocol (UDP).  The transmitted data is often available in a very low frequency, which is not desirable for a smooth display. It is therefore necessary to interpolate the data between intervals based on the time elapsed since last rendered frame.

With the present state of the art technology, size and mass of the satellites have come down. This necessitated the need for a low shock separation system that does not have mass attached to the separated satellite. Development of Nano satellites with mass of the order of 1 to 24 kg has become popular among scientific/ academic institutions for carrying out scientific experiments. INLS 3U Unipod System (Nano satellite dispenser system) is a satellite dispensing system designed by ISRO for accommodating four 3U class Nano satellites in a single structure where each satellite is deployed independently by separate actuation commands. INLS stands for ISRO's Nano satellite Launch System. The Unipod separation system successfully flown first time in PSLV C56 Mission for the deployment of three foreign satellites namely Nulion, Galassia-2 and SCOOB II.

Fast Coupled Load Analysis through Reanalysis Technique: Formulation and Demonstration on Sample Problems

In a typical Launch Vehicle (LV), dynamic responses due to various flight events are estimated through Coupled Load Analysis (CLA) where the launch vehicle is coupled with a spacecraft. A launch vehicle is subjected to various loads during its flight due to engine thrust depletion / shut-off, thrust oscillation, wind and gust, maneuvering loads. In aerospace industry a standard CLA is performed by generating the mathematical model of launch vehicle and coupling it with reduced mathematical model of satellite and applying the boundary conditions. A CLA is a time consuming process as several flight instances and load cases need to be considered along with generation of structural dynamic model at each time instants. For every new mission, the satellites are mission specific whereas the launch vehicle and the loads remain unchanged. To take advantage of this fact, a new method called “Fast CLA through Reanalysis technique” is proposed in the present paper.

Development of Deployment Mechanism for RAMBHA-LP Payload Onboard Chandrayaan-3 Lander

RAMBHA-LP (Radio Anatomy of Moon Bound Hypersensitive Ionosphere and Atmosphere - Langmuir Probe) is one of the key scientific payloads onboard the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission. Its objectives were to estimate the plasma density and its variations on the near lunar surface. The probe was initially kept in a stowed condition attached to the lander. A mechanism was designed and realized to meet the functional requirement of deploying the probe at a distance of 1 meter, equivalent to the Debye length of the probe in the moon’s plasma environment. The probe deployment mechanism consists of the Titanium alloy spherical probe with a Titanium Nitride coating on its surface to achieve a constant work function, a long carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer boom, a double torsion spring, a dust-protection box, and a shape-memory alloy-based Frangibolt actuator for low-shock separation. The entire mechanism weighed less than 1.5 kilograms.

Post Flight Simulation of Dynamic Responses at the Satellite Interface of a Typical Launch Vehicle During Solid Motor Ignition

Launch vehicle structures in course of its flight will be subjected to dynamic forces over a range of frequencies up to 2000 Hz. These loads can be steady, transient or random in nature. The dynamic excitations like aerodynamic gust, motor oscillations and transients, sudden application of control force are capable of exciting the low frequency structural modes and cause significant responses at the interface of launch vehicle and satellite. The satellite interface responses to these low frequency excitations are estimated through Coupled Load Analysis (CLA). The analysis plays a crucial role in mission as the satellite design loads and Sine vibration test levels are defined based on this. The perquisite of CLA is to predict the responses with considerable accuracy so that the design loads are not exceeded in the flight. CLA validation is possible by simulating the flight experienced responses through the analysis.

The purpose of the Air Generation System is to provide a constant supply of conditioned fresh air to meet the necessary oxygen availability and to prevent carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations for the occupants in an aircraft. The engine bleed energy or electrical load energy consumed towards this circumstance accounts to be approx. 5% of total fuel burn and in turn, contributes to the global emissions of greenhouse gases. This paper studies the improvement areas of the present conventional system such as fuel burn consumption associated with an aircraft environmental control system (ECS) depending on, the amount of bleed and ram air usage, electric power consumption. Improved systems for propulsion, power generation, sustainability, hybridization, and environmental control can be desirable for an aircraft.

Thermal Analysis of Prismatic Core Sandwich Structural Panel for Hypersonic Application

Hypersonic flight vehicles have potential applications in strategic defence, space missions, and future civilian high-speed transportation systems. However, structural integration has significant challenges due to extreme aero-thermo-mechanical coupled effects. Scramjet-powered air-breathing hypersonic vehicles experience extreme heat loads induced by combustion, shock waves and viscous heat dissipation. An active cooling thermal protection system for scramjet applications has the highest potential for thermal load management, especially for long-duration flights, considering the weight penalty associated with the heavier passive thermal insulation structures. We consider the case of active cooling of scramjet engine structural walls with endothermic hydrocarbon fuel. We have developed a semi-analytical quasi-2D heat transfer model considering a prismatic core single cooling channel segment as a representative volume element (RVE) to analyse larger-scale problems.

High Frequency Unsteady Pressure Measurement System for Aerodynamic Characterization in Launch Vehicles

Unsteady pressure measurements are crucial for understanding dynamic pressure distribution changes in fluid flow fields and over object surfaces, revealing insights into complex flow phenomena induced by shock waves, vortices, boundary layer interactions, and flow separation. While ground-based wind tunnel tests have conventionally provided these insights, this paper presents an on-board system for real-time unsteady pressure data acquisition. The system's main challenge is accurately resolving high-frequency static and dynamic pressure variations over very high base pressure values. To meet this challenge, the paper highlights the importance of sigma-delta Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) due to their high resolution, oversampling techniques, noise filtering capabilities, and wide dynamic range. These ADCs seamlessly integrate with digital systems, ensuring reliable real-time pressure data acquisition during launch and flight operations.

Uncrewed Aerial vehicles are useful for a multitude of applications in today’s age, covering a wide variety of fields such as defense, environmental science, meteorology, emergency responders, search and rescue operations, entertainment robotics, etc. Different types of aircrafts such as fixed wing UAVs, rotor wing UAVs are used for the mentioned applications depending upon the application requirements. One such category of UAVs is the lighter-than-air aircrafts, that provide their own set of advantages over the other types of UAVs. Blimps are among the participants of the lighter-than-air category that are expected to offer advantages such as higher endurance and range, and safer and more comfortable Human-machine-Interaction, etc. as compared to fixed wing and rotor wing UAVs due to their design. A ROS (Robot Operating System) based control system was developed for controlling the blimp.

Navigation systems present in the launch vehicle play a pivotal role in achieving the intended orbits for these spacecrafts. During the assembly of these navigation packages on the launch vehicle, it is required to measure the initial tilt of the navigation sensors for any misalignment corrections, which is given as input to the navigation software. A high precision inclinometer is required to measure these tilts with a resolution of 1 arc-second.

Configuration and Design of Mobile Checkout System for Ground Testing of Winged Body Reusable Launch Vehicle

Abstract Unlike conventional launch vehicles the winged body reusable launch vehicle needs to be tested and evaluated for its functionality during the pre-flight preparation at the runway. The ground based checkout systems for the avionics and actuators performance testing during pre-flight evaluation and actuation are not designed for rapid movement. The new kind of launch vehicle with conventional rocket motor first-stage and winged body upper-stage demands the system testing at Launchpad and at runway. In the developmental flights of the winged body part of the vehicle, the pre-flight testing needs to be carried out extensively at runway. The safety protocol forbids the permanent structure for hosting the checkout system near runway. The alternative is the development of a rapidly deployable and removable checkout system. A design methodology adopting conventional industrial instrumentation systems and maintaining mobility is presented.

Structural Loads for Crew Escape System (CES) of Gaganyaan Launch Vehicle During Abort

Abstract : In any human space flight program, safety of the crew is of utmost priority. In case of exigency during atmospheric flight, the crew is safely and quickly rescued from the launch vehicle using Crew escape system. Crew escape system is a crucial part of the Human Space flight vehicle which carries the crew module away from the ascending launch vehicle by firing its rocket motors (Pitch Motor (PM), Low altitude Escape Motor (LEM) and High altitude Escape Motor (HEM)). The structural loads experienced by the crew escape system during the mission abort are severe as the propulsive forces, aerodynamic forces and inertial forces on the vehicle are significantly high. Since the mission abort can occur at anytime during the ascent phase of the launch vehicle, trajectory profiles are generated for abort at every one second interval of ascent flight time considering several combinations of dispersions on various propulsive parameters of abort motors and aero parameters.
