Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems for City Bus Applications

In 2017 there were over 1,700 fatalities on Great Britain roads, with almost 25,000 people seriously injured. With vehicle miles increasing each year it is important that there is improved on-road safety, both for passenger cars and for public transport. Nowadays, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are widely utilised, with the EU Commission mandating ADAS such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-keeping assistance and reversing cameras on all new cars from 2021. Transport for London have introduced the Bus Safety Standard, within which is the requirement for ADAS systems, many of which are due to become mandatory from 2021. Bus operators such as KMB in Hong Kong have also put an additional focus on bus safety due to concerns with casualty rates. This study uses statistical analysis of bus accidents that have occurred across Great Britain in order to determine which ADAS technologies will result in the largest reduction of potential bus accidents.

Emission factors evaluation in the RDE context by a multivariate statistical approach

The Real Driving Emission (RDE) procedure will measure the pollutants, such as NOx, emitted by cars while driven on the road. RDE will not replace laboratory tests, such as the current WLTP but it will be added to them. RDE is complementary to the laboratory-based procedure to check the pollutant emissions level of a light-duty vehicle in real driving conditions. This means that the car will be driven on a real road according to random acceleration and deceleration patterns conditioned by traffic flow. So, the procedure will ensure that cars deliver real emissions over on-road and so the currently observed differences between emissions measured in the laboratory and those measured on road under real-world conditions, will be reduced. However, the identification of a path on the road to check the test conditions of RDE is not easy and hardly repeatable.

This SAE Standard provides a table of textual messages meeting the requirements for expressing the names of street and roads and some basic building blocks for phrases commonly used in the ITS industry. The tables provided herein are taken from SAE J2369, and follow the rules of SAE J2540 and therefore allow a local representation in various different languages, media expressions, etc. to allow true international use of these phrases. The phrases are predominantly intended to provide a means to express street names including pre and post fixes (North Oak Street is an example name with a prefix "North" and main portion "Oak" and a suffix "Street"). Other phrases exist for other specific specialty areas of ITS, and all such phrases follow a set of encoding and decoding rules outlined in SAE J2540 to ensure that the use of these phrases in messages remain interoperable between disparate types of user equipment.

This SAE Standard provides a table of textual messages meeting the requirements for expressing "Radio Data Systems" (RDS) phrases commonly used in the ITS industry. They can be used both over the RDS subcarrier transmission media as part of a 37-bit long "Group 8a message" as well as being used to provide a common content list of phrases used in a wide number of other media and applications. This document SHALL define the normative index values to be used, extending the CEN established list to provide phrases needed by US practitioners. This standard provides non-normative textual phrases which MAY be used by implementers to ensure intelligible results. This document SHALL follow the formats and rules established in SAE J2540 in the expressions, manipulations, and use of such tables. It should be pointed out that within the rules established by this document a variety of final table are all considered "compliant" with the document, and may vary as fits the needs of implementers.

Photogrammetric Frost Roughness Measurements in Cold-Soaked Conditions

Cold-soaked fuel frost (CSFF) is a form of aircraft wing contamination that occurs when a vehicle caries sufficient fuel for multiple trips or take-offs and landings. Following the first trip, which may reach altitudes above 10,000 m (33,000 ft), the fuel for the subsequent trips is carried in the wing tanks and may reach temperatures below -25 °C. In certain times of the year at some airports, temperatures and humidity levels will form CSFF on the aircraft wing surfaces over the fuel tanks. Unless an exemption is granted for the specific aircraft model, aircraft are not allowed to takeoff if the wing surfaces are contaminated by frost. Because aircraft operators desire to minimize vehicle time spent at airports, aircraft manufacturers are expected to pursue designs that safely operate with CSFF at takeoff and to pursue certification exemptions for aircraft models enabling CSFF takeoffs.

Every winter, northern airport operations are disrupted by heavy snowstorms and freezing precipitations. A simple snow accumulation or a thin layer of ice can affect aircraft operations (take-off, landing and taxi), and increase the risk for passengers and crew members, by rendering the runway slippery. Any deficits in deicing operations can also lead to flight delays and even cancellations that cost a lot to the industry. In order to maintain the runway and taxiway in a safe and useable condition, airport authorities use mechanical tools, but also chemical products. Chemical products available on the market for use in airports are principally in solid forms and liquid form, and are denominated as Runway Deicing Product (RDP).

Road induced noise is getting more and more significant in context of the electrification of the powertrain. The automotive industry is seeking for technologies to predict the contribution of vehicle components upfront, early in the development process. Classical Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) is a well-established technique that successfully identifies the transmission paths of noise and vibration from different excitation sources to the target responses. But it has a drawback: it requires the physical availability of the full vehicle. To achieve shorter development cycles, to avoid costly time-consuming design iterations and due to the limited availability of prototypes, engineers derived a method that addresses these requirements.

Assessment of Automotive Environmental Noise on Mobile Phone Hands-Free Call Quality

Environmental noises such as wind, road, powertrain, and HVAC noise are important aspects to consider when implementing a hands-free terminal for mobile phone calling from within a car. Traditionally, these environmental noises have been exclusively considered for driver comfort; however, with the introduction of the hands-free terminals (HFT) and increasing consumer demand relative to mobile phone call quality, a broader implication of high background noise levels should be considered. HFT algorithm development and implementation can and does provide a high level of background noise suppression to mitigate these concerns, but this is often done at the expense of computational power and cumulative delay during a phone call. The more advantageous solution would be to address the problem from a source and path perspective with emphasis on reduction of noise in the frequency bands which most influence call quality performance.

Acoustic Effects of Lightweighting in a Sport Utility Vehicle

Weight reduction is a significant concern for automotive manufacturers, and is often achieved by removing as much mass as is safe from the structure of the vehicle. This has a negative effect on the interior acoustics, which has become more and more of an issue as technology has advanced and people expect to be able to do business and consume media in their vehicles. Traditional acoustic treatment tends to be very heavy, which eliminates some of the weight savings. Recently a vehicle study was performed to determine if the current production sound package in a highly-rated sport utility vehicle could be maintained or improved while reducing the weight. This paper presents the results of that study. The study focused on road noise transmitted through the floor (carpet, rear wheelhouse inner and trunk insulation) and engine noise transmitted through the dash (dash inner). Testing was performed both at the vehicle level on the road and at the component level in the laboratory.

Detection of Potholes and Speedbumps by Monitoring Front Traffic

This article proposes a novel method for detecting potholes and speed bumps by monitoring the front traffic when the road is not visibly seen. The existing camera-based systems in the car directly scan the road surface and estimate the road profile. The main disadvantage of the current technology is that it is not possible to detect the road profile when the road is not clearly visible. This can happen in situations when roads are waterlogged or have occluded bumps and in low light conditions. In thisarticle, the proposed method for detecting potholes or speed bumps by monitoring the vertical movement of the front traffic can enhance the existing algorithm by overcoming the abovementioned disadvantage. However, the method works only when there is traffic ahead of the system vehicle. The method makes level 3 and above autonomous driving more robust in terms of comfort and safety by estimating the road profile in the abovementioned road conditions.
