Semi-autonomous parking assist system (SA-PAS)

This paper describes the Semi-autonomous parking assist system (SA-PAS) developed using combination of high accuracy position sensing and electronic power steering. A real-time system that helps driver to identify the parking space and assist to perform maneuvers. Parking is often a difficult task, especially for inexperienced drivers. Starting with the problem of having to find a suitable parking spot, to then maneuvering in to it without colliding with anything or anyone, while trying avoiding disturbing the surrounding traffic. The numbers of vehicles are rapidly increasing as compared to the expansions of roads and parking spaces. Therefore, effective use of the existing spaces is needed (by making them narrower), which can cause inconvenience to many drivers. Semi-autonomous parking assist system searches for suitable space and steers the vehicle into it, while driver has to control the gear shifter, accelerator and brakes.

Noise and vibration simulations method for electric hybrid tractor powertrain.

Internal combustion (IC) engines have been serving as prime source of power in tractors, since late 19th Century. Over this period, there have been significant improvements in IC engine technology leading to increased power density, reduction in tailpipe emissions and refinement in powertrain noise of tractors. As the regulations governing tailpipe emissions continue to be more stringent, original equipment manufacturers also have initiated work on innovative approaches such as diesel-electric hybrid powertrains to ensure compliance with new norms. However, introduction of such technologies may impact customer’s auditory, vibratory and drivability perceptions. Absence of conventional IC engine noise, association of electric whistle and whine, torque changes with activation/de-activation of motors and transmission behavior under transient conditions may result in new NVH issues in hybrid electric vehicles.

Development of Electric Vehicle Controller by using MBD approach

The automobile industry is moving towards electrification of Vehicle to remove the exhaust gas emissions. A project was undertaken to develop Electric Vehicle control system from concept to vehicle trials in less than a year. The complete development cycle of an electronic controller required to be compressed to prepare mule electric vehicle within timeline. Agile methodology has been used for this project instead of waterfall as other control systems were in developing stage; system requirements were changing frequently. This paper presents the electric vehicle control unit development with agile methodology using model based development (MBD) in MATLAB and Simulink environment. The project flow consists of major phases like design of electrical architecture, system requirements specification, selection and setting up the simulation platform, EVCU strategy development, testing on Model in Loop (MIL)/ Hardware in Loop (HIL), vehicle trials.

Study on effect of HVAC Air Flow Distribution on Windows Fogging

Windshield & Windows fogging up in cars has long been a topic of interest & concern. Lot of research has already been put into Front/Rear windshield fogging up issue and, Defrosters, Heated Windshields have been designed to remove the fog effectively. However, Windows Fogging up is still one of the major concerns faced while driving, as it obscures the drivers' field of vision and raises safety concerns. Windows fogging up is a phenomenon in which Moisture is condensed on the glass of the window. It is classified into two categories - Inside Fogging and Outside Fogging. When Ambient temperature is lower than the cabin temperature, the moisture is condensed on the inside surface of the glass. In this case the moisture is added inside the cabin by the occupants when they exhale air. Similarly when the Cabin temperature is lower than the ambient temperature, the moisture from atmosphere is condensed on the outer surface of the glass.

Research Objective The importance of evaluating ride comfort with high degrees of accuracy objectively and its correlation with subjective perception is increasing day by day because of the long duration of the driving experience. The complex motion of the vehicle which is the combination of heave, roll and pitch motion is responsible for causing extreme uneasiness to the driver as well as the passenger. In this paper, ride comfort evaluation is done on the highway with similar traffic conditions with the help of Vibration Dose Value Analysis, Suspension Working Space and Ride Diagram methods for two hatchbacks and its correlation with the complex motion like choppiness of the vehicle is established that will help us to enhance the driver ride experience. Methodology The ride testing is performed for two hatchbacks on a highway road with different kinds of terrain ranging from highly uneven road roughness to moderately smooth surface for a speed range of 60-100 kmph.

Electrification System Modeling with Machine/Deep Learning for Virtual Drive Quality Prediction

A virtual 'model' is generally a mathematical surrogate of a physical system and when well correlated, serves as a basis for understanding the physical system in part or in entirety. Drive Quality defines a driver's 'experience' of a blend of controlled responses to an applied input. The 'experience' encompasses physical, biological and bio-chemical perception of vehicular motion by the human body. In the automotive domain, many physical modeling tools are used to model the sub-components and its integration at the system level. Physical Modeling requires high domain expertise and is not only time consuming but is also very 'compute-resource' intensive. In the path to achieving 'vDQP (Virtual Drive Quality Prediction)' goal, one of the requirements is to establish 'well-correlated' virtual environments of high fidelity with respect to standard test maneuvers. This helps in advancing many developmental activities from a Controls and Calibration aspect.

Airbags are very important passive safety component used in vehicle for the safety of the driver during the accident. Airbags are provided with the vent hole for the immediate discharge of the gases which fills the airbag during deployment in case of any accident. Size of the airbag vent hole plays a very important role for the performance of airbag in reducing the driver Injury. Study shows the difference in the performance of the airbags in terms of driver injury and airbag displacement with change in the size of the vent hole for the same airbag.

Honda’s OBD II diagnostic connecting device Honda Connect was used as transceiver for this telematics system which was used as an accessory in Honda vehicles. Data collected with this device with large sample size and regional diversity across India was used in product development for Honda System. Control system development for BSVI vehicles, Idle start stop hardware specificaton selection and Battery electric vehicle target range study was done with Honda Connect Data.

In-Vehicle Directional Audio Streaming

In-Vehicle Infotainment has evolved greatly over years from a simple tuner based radio with a small LED display to a complex system with highly intelligent interactive HMI which can mirror the smart phone. The full-fledged entertainment features like watching videos are restricted to only rear passengers. In drive mode, drivers are limited with access to only audio to avoid driver distraction. Rear passengers and drivers are classified into different audio zones. Each of the rear passengers are equipped with headsets so that audio merging with driver zone can be avoided. This leads to passenger discomfort, as many passengers would not prefer to hook up with headset all the time. Now the automotive world is envisioned to reach fully autonomous mode where there is no driver and every passenger is interested to listen to music/video of diverse interest. The audio zones in autonomous car need not be zonified or linear. Circular audio zone can also be a good choice for autonomous cars.

In autonomous vehicle world human safety takes highest priority. And most researchers agree that machines won't be able to completely take over driving duties for years or even decades. "Today's autonomous vehicles can drive relatively well in typical settings, but they fail in exceptional situations - and it's those situations that are the most dangerous," said Walter Lasecki, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering. "Designing autonomous systems that can handle those exceptional situations could take decades, and in the meantime, we're going to need something to fill the gap. Few companies have introduced human safety drivers in autonomous vehicles which has cost advantage compared to traditional ride sharing services. Combining human and artificial intelligence in autonomous vehicles could push driverless cars more quickly toward wide - scale adoption.

These kind of situations are tough to handle even if one is victimized . The victim can be rescued on time if proper information about the situation would reach his friends or family . Limitations: In existing system, if the accidental crash happens then signal from airbag unit will wake up the mobile, Once this wake up call happens,it will activate the gsm module. The emergency contacts stored in the mobile will be dialed up and the victim can convey his emergency situation through that. The driver will be rescued only if crash happens. There is no system to rescue the driver if heart attack happens when he is driving.

Existing steering assist feature during a curve is available by combining additional driver monitoring camera & 360 degree camera. The complexity is very high in the implementation and computation of these algorithm. These solutions are not cost-effective for emerging markets.

A Self-Intelligent Traffic Light Control System based on Traffic Environment using Machine Learning

In this paper, we will detect and track vehicles on a video stream and count those going through a defined line and to ultimately give an idea of what the real-time on street situation is across the road network. Our major objective is to optimize the delay in transit of vehicles in odd hours of the day. It uses YOLO object detection technique to detect objects on each of the video frames And SORT (Simple Online and Realtime Tracking algorithm) to track those objects over different frames. Once the objects are detected and tracked over different frames a simple mathematical calculation is applied to count the intersections between the vehicles previous and current frame positions with a defined line. At present, the traffic control systems in India, lack intelligence and act as an open-loop control system, with no feedback or sensing network. Present technologies use Inductive loops and sensors to detect the number of vehicles passing by.

Development of methodology using DoE approach to improve Steering returnability of any Vehicle through virtual simulation

In driving, Steering is the input motion to the vehicle. The driver uses steering input to change the direction of the vehicle. During Parking or U turn bends the Steering is locked and later released to follow the desired path. Steering return ability is defined as the ratio of difference between steering wheel position at lock condition and steering wheel angle after 3 seconds of release to the steering wheel angle at lock condition. Having proper steering return ability characteristics has an important effect on vehicle steering characteristics. In this study, a full vehicle ADAMS model is prepared and virtual steering return ability have been simulated in Adams/Car for a Pickup truck vehicle. Simulated responses in the steering wheel angle have been validated by comparison with measurements. A Design of Experiment study is setup and Iterations are carried out to find the effect of Hard points and friction parameters.

Aircraft production is facing various technical challenges, such as large product dimensions, complex joining processes and the organization of assembly tasks. Meeting the requirements that come with large dimensions, low tolerances and small batch sizes, in combination with complex joining processes, automation and labour-intensive inspection task, is often difficult to achieve in an economically viable way. ZeMA believes that a semi-automated approach is the most effective for optimizing aircraft section assembly. An effective optimization of aircraft production can be achieved with a semi-automated riveting process for solid rivets using Human-Robot-Collaboration in combination with an intuitive Human-Machine-Interaction operating concept. While using dynamic task sharing between human and robot based on their skills, and considering ergonomics, the determined ideal solution involves placing a robot inside the section barrel.

Analysis of a Coupling System of Aircraft Environmental Control and Fuel Tank Inerting Based on Membrane Separation

This paper raises a coupling system of aircraft environmental control and fuel tank inerting based on membrane separation. The system applies a membrane dehumidifier to replace water vapor removal unit of heat regenerator, condenser and water separator, which is widely used in conventional aircraft environmental control system nowadays. Water vapor can travel across the membrane wall under its pressure difference without phase change, so the dehumidification process consumes no cooling capacity and the cooling capacity of the system increases. This paper first compares the thermodynamic properties of environmental control system based on membrane dehumidification and the environmental control system based on condensation. The results show that the membrane dehumidification system has bigger cooling capacity and lighter weight.

Flight Optimization Model on Global and Interval Ranges for Conceptual Studies of MEA Systems

In development of more electric aircraft applications, it is important to discuss aircraft energy management on various level of aircraft operation. This paper presents a computationally efficient optimization model for evaluating flight efficiency on global and interval flight ranges. The model is described as an optimal control problem with an objective functional subjected to state condition and control input constraints along a flight path range. A flight model consists of aircraft point-mass equations of motion including engine and aerodynamic models. The engine model generates the engine thrust and fuel consumption rate for operation condition and the aerodynamic model generates the drag force and lift force of an aircraft for flight conditions. These models is identified by data taken from a published literature as an example. First, approximate optimization process is performed for climb, cruise, decent and approach as each interval range path.

Downhill Safety Assistant Driving System for Battery Electric Vehicles on Mountain Roads

When driving in mountainous areas, vehicles often encounter downhill conditions. To ensure safe driving, it is necessary to control the speed of vehicles. For internal combustion engine vehicles, auxiliary brake such as engine brake can be used to alleviate the thermal load caused by the continuous braking of the friction brake. For battery electric vehicles (BEVs), regenerative braking can be used as auxiliary braking to improve brake safety. And through regenerative braking, energy can be partly converted into electrical energy and stored in accumulators (such as power batteries and supercapacitors), thus extending the mileage. However, the driver's line of sight in the mountains is limited, resulting in a certain degree of blindness in driving, so it is impossible to fully guarantee the safety and energy saving of downhill driving.

The brake pedal is the brake system component that the driver fundamentally has contact and through its action wait the response of whole system. Each OEM define during vehicle conceptualization the behavior of brake pedal that characterizes the pedal feel that in general reflects not only the characteristic from that vehicle but also from the entire brand. Technically the term known as Pedal Feel means the relation between the force applied on the pedal, the pedal travel and the deceleration achieved by the vehicle. Such relation curves are also analyzed in conjunction with objective analysis sheets where the vehicle brake behavior is analyzed in test track considering different deceleration conditions, force and pedal travel. On technical literature is possible to find some data and studies considering the hydraulic brakes behavior.
