Synergistic effect of millerization, electric supercharging and 48V mild hybrid system

The hybridization of the powertrain will be indispensable concerning the CO2 emission targets of 2020 and beyond. Moreover, 48V mild hybrid systems is regarded to be the prospecting near term solution due to its cost-effective fuel consumption reduction with the minimum system change for production acceptance. In this study, the potential of fuel consumption reduction in a natural aspirated MPI engine with 48V electric super charger and other synergistic technologies was evaluated to investigate the optimized gasoline engine concept for the 48V mild hybrid vehicle. The compression ratio was increased to for thermal efficiency enhancement. Tumble ratio was increased to realize faster combustion and mitigate knocking combustion.

Experimental and Numerical Study on Speaker Design of Active Pedestrian Alerting System (APAS) in Hybrid and Pure Electric Vehicles

APAS refers to a low speed sound warning system of electric vehicles, which emits alerting sound only to target pedestrians by sound focusing techniques with array of speakers and object detective camera. In the present study, experimental and numerical investigations are conducted in designing speaker part and array of APAS with consideration of three main performance matrices; HEV/EV warning sound regulations in Europe and U.S., pedestrian awareness, and driver’s noise comfort. The present APAS speaker consists of back enclosure, wave guide and front grill. Each of these components plays an important role for characterizing frequency emphasis and sound directivity. The main impedance frequencies of the speaker are determined by considering warning sound regulations and also by analyzing acoustic frequency response at in/outside of a vehicle.

A Development of Fuel Saving Driving Technique for Parallel HEV

This paper examines the effect of pulse-and-glide (PnG) driving strategies on the fuel efficiency when applied on parallel HEVs. Several PnG strategies are proposed, and these include the electrical, mechanical, and combined PnG strategies. The electrical PnG strategy denotes the hybrid powertrain control tactics in which the battery is charged or discharged according to the power demanded while maintaining the constant vehicle speed. On the other hand, the mechanical PnG strategy denotes the powertrain control tactics in which the vehicle accelerates or decelerates according to the power load while minimizing the battery usage. The combined PnG strategy involves both electrical and mechanical strategies to find a balanced point in between them. Here, a tradeoff relationship between the fuel efficiency and the vehicle drivability related to the tracking performance of the desired target speed is revealed.

Validating Prototype Connected Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Safety Applications in Real- World Settings

This paper summarizes the validation of prototype vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) safety applications based on Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) in the United States under a cooperative agreement between the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partners LLC (CAMP) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). After consideration of a number of V2I safety applications, Red Light Violation Warning (RLVW), Curve Speed Warning (CSW) and Reduced Speed Zone Warning with Lane Closure Warning (RSZW/LC) were developed, validated and demonstrated using seven different vehicles (six passenger vehicles and one Class 8 truck) leveraging DSRC-based messages from a Road Side Unit (RSU). The developed V2I safety applications were validated for more than 20 distinct scenarios and over 100 test runs using both light- and heavy-duty vehicles over a period of seven months. Subsequently, additional on-road testing of CSW on public roads and RSZW/LC in live work zones were conducted in Southeast Michigan.

Development of Wireless Message for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Safety Applications

This paper summarizes the development of a wireless message from infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) for safety applications based on Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) under a cooperative agreement between the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partners LLC (CAMP) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). During the development of the Curve Speed Warning (CSW) and Reduced Speed Zone Warning with Lane Closure (RSZW/LC) safety applications [1], the Basic Information Message (BIM) was developed to wirelessly transmit infrastructure-centric information. The Traveler Information Message (TIM) structure, as described in the SAE J2735, provides a mechanism for the infrastructure to issue and display in-vehicle signage of various types of advisory and road sign information. This approach, though effective in communicating traffic advisories, is limited by the type of information that can be broadcast from infrastructures.

A Study on Improvement of Sitting Posture Stability for Heavy Truck Drivers

The driver’s seat in heavy trucks is designed for an upright driving posture with narrow back and cushion angles; thus, the seatback offers very little support. This makes the sitting posture prone to shifting during long trips, leading to loss of comfort and increase in fatigue. Sitting posture stability allows initial posture to be maintained during long drives, and the lack of stability causes fatigue and body pain during the drive. This study confirmed that enhancement of sitting posture stability of the driver’s seat in heavy trucks requires appropriate support from the cushion. The study also analyzed the support characteristics of each part of the cushion, and presented development guidelines of new cushion. Although subjective assessments of sitting posture stability have been performed, this study presented a method for quantitative and efficient assessment of sitting posture stability using the PAM-COMFORT simulation tool and virtual testing.

Development of Noise Propensity Index (NPI) for Robust Brake Friction

A semi-empirical index to evaluate the noise propensity of brake friction materials is introduced. The noise propensity index (NPI) is based on the ratio of surface and matrix stiffness of the friction material, fraction of high-pressure contact plateaus on the sliding surface, and standard deviation of the surface stiffness of the friction material that affect the amplitude and frequency of the stick-slip oscillation. The correlation between noise occurrence and NPI was examined using various brake linings for commercial vehicles. The results obtained from reduced-scale noise dynamometer and vehicle tests indicated that NPI is well correlated with noise propensity. The analysis of the stick-slip profiles also indicated that the surface property affects the amplitude of friction oscillation, while the mechanical property of the friction material influences the propagation of friction oscillation after the onset of vibration.

Expanded Human Choice based on Duty/Demand Cycles for In-Wheel Motors in Electric Vehicles

In order to design the in-wheel motor (IWM) for Electric Vehicles (EV), it is necessary to analyze the desired (expected) duty cycle at a higher performance level in order that the IWM becomes commercially relevant. The duty cycle may be representative of different segments of the customer base. Or, the individual customer may wish to have a set of IWMs that uniquely meet his/her measured “demand” cycle for a balance of drivability and efficiency. Questions then arise: How to measure the demand cycle of an individual? What 2 or 3 standard duty cycles should be offered as customer choices for their vehicle? Should the IWM represent multiple speed domains to enhance efficiency and drivability? Can the vehicle be updated rapidly 2 to 3 years after purchase? Etc. In this paper, we lay the groundwork to answer these types of customer questions for an EV with four independent IWMs.

Development of Output Voltage Adjusting Control Based on ADAS Map Information in Low-Voltage DCDC Converter System for HEV Fuel Efficiency

One of the ways to improve the fuel efficiency of the HEV (Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) is to optimize automotive electric system. In order to achieve this, the LDC (Low voltage DC-DC Converter) variable voltage was controlled. Using the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) map, the charge-discharge behaviors of 12V lead-acid battery was predicted during driving so that, the battery could be charged efficiently. In this study, the feedback control system for 12V battery discharging was designed to compromise between the 12V battery SOC (State of Charge) and the driving conditions at different traffic points. In contrast to earlier approaches, this experimental result indicates that the LDC variable voltage control based on ADAS is able to reduce the LDC average output power by 17.1% therefore, increasing fuel efficiency and ensuring the durability of the 12V battery.

Active Booming Noise Control for Hybrid Vehicles

Pressure variation during engine combustion generates torque fluctuation that is delivered through the driveline. Torque fluctuation delivered to the tire shakes the vehicle body and causes the body components to vibrate, resulting in booming noise. HKMC (Hyundai Kia Motor Company)’s TMED (Transmission Mounted Electric Device) type generates booming noises due to increased weight from the addition of customized hybrid parts and the absence of a torque converter. Some of the improvements needed to overcome this weakness include reducing the torsion-damper stiffness, adding dynamic dampers, and moving the operation point of the engine from the optimized point. These modifications have some potential negative impacts such as increased cost and sacrificed fuel economy. Here, we introduce a method of reducing lock-up booming noise in an HEV at low engine speed.

Energy Management Strategy of Hybrid Electric Vehicle using Stochastic Dynamic Programming

This paper is concerned with the energy management strategy of hybrid electric vehicle using stochastic dynamic programming. The aim is the control strategy of the power distribution for hybrid electric vehicle powertrains to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining drivability. The fuel economy of hybrid electric vehicle is strongly influenced by power management control strategy. Rule-based control strategy is popular strategy thanks to its effectiveness in real-time implementation, but rule should be designed and efficiency of entire drive trains is not optimized. Dynamic programming, one of optimization-based control strategy presents outstanding performance, but cannot be used as real-time control strategy directly, since its non-causal property and drawback that global optimal solution can only be obtained for specific driving cycle. In this paper, stochastic dynamic programming is applied to parallel hybrid electric vehicle to optimize vehicle performance in average sense.

The Optimization of Vehicle Performances Using Dynamic Models with Two Steps

This paper presents an industrial application of the Analytical Target Cascading (ATC) methodology to the optimal design of commercial vehicle steering and suspension system. This is a pilot study about the suspension and steering design of a semi medium bus, whose objective is to develop and introduce an ATC methodology to an automobile development process. In the conventional process, it is difficult not only to find design variables which meet the target of Ride and Handling (R&H) performance using a detailed full car model, but also to figure out the interrelation between the vehicle and its subsystems. In this study, ATC methodology is used in order to obtain the optimal values such as geometric characteristics satisfying both the vehicle's R&H target and the subsystem (suspension and steering system) 's target.

Impact of Hilly Road Profile on Optimal Energy Management Strategy for FCHEV with Various Battery Sizes

This study investigates how hilly road profiles affect the optimal energy management strategy for fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV) with various battery sizes. First, a simplified FCHEV model is developed to describe power and energy flows throughout the powertrain and evaluate hydrogen consumption. Then, an optimal control problem is formulated to find the globally optimal energy management strategy of FCHEV over driving cycles with road elevation profile. In order to solve the optimal energy management problem of the FCHEV, Dynamic Programming, a dynamic optimization method, is used, and their results are analyzed to find out how hilly road conditions affect the optimal energy management strategies. The results show that the optimal energy management with a smaller battery tends to actively prepare (e.g. pre-charge/pre-discharge) for uphill/downhill roads in order not to violate the battery state of charge (SoC) bounds.

Development of Polymer Composite Battery Pack Case for an Electric Vehicle

A battery pack case of an electric vehicle was developed with a fibrous thermoplastic composite material. Due to cost effectiveness, long-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics by direct process (D-LFT) were adopted. PA6 (Polyamide 6)-based composites were processed using a D-LFT pilot machine at the temperature range between 250° and 290°. Glass and carbon fibers were added in the matrix varying the mixture ratio of the fibers while keeping the weight fraction 40%. The increase of carbon fibers in the mixture increased tensile modulus and strength, however, decreased Izod impacts strength. The fatigue life of developed composites was evaluated by fatigue tests in tension, which were over one million cycles at the maximum fatigue loading less than 60% of the composite strength. Associated with fiber orientation, anisotropic mechanical behavior was investigated in terms of flexural properties and mold shrinkage.

Co-operative Control of Regenerative Braking using a Front Electronic Wedge Brake and a Rear Electronic Mechanical Brake Considering the Road Friction Characteristic

In this study, a co-operative regenerative braking control algorithm was developed for an electric vehicle (EV) equipped with an electronic wedge brake (EWB) for its front wheels and an electronic mechanical brake (EMB) for its rear wheels. The co-operative regenerative braking control algorithm was designed considering the road friction characteristic to increase the recuperation energy while avoiding wheel lock. A powertrain model of an EV composed of a motor, and batteries and a MATLAB model of the control algorithm were also developed. They were linked to the CarSim model of the vehicle under study to develop an EV simulator. The EMB and EWB were modeled with an actuator, screw, and wedge to develop an EMB and EWB simulator. A co-simulator for an EV equipped with an EWB for the front wheels and an EMB for the rear wheels was fabricated, composed of the EV and the EMB and EWB simulator.

The success of improved fuel economy is the proper integration of thermal management components which are appropriately performed to reduce friction and wasted energy. The thermal management systems of vehicle are able to balance the multiple needs such as heating, cooling, or appropriate operation within specified temperature ranges of propulsion systems. Since the propulsion systems of vehicle have changed from a single energy source based on conventional internal combustion engine to hybrid system including more electrical system such as full type of hybrid electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, a new transition associated with vehicle thermal management arises. More efficient thermal management systems are required to improve the fuel economy in the hybrid electric vehicles because of the driving of electric traction motor and the increase of engine off time. The decrease of engine operation time may not sustain the proper temperature ranges of engine and gearbox.

Analysis of Muscle Fatigue for Urban Bus Drivers using Electromyography

Professional bus drivers are highly exposed to physical fatigue and work-related injuries because driving task includes complicated actions that require a variety of ability and cause extreme concentration or strain. For this reason, there has always been some sense of concern regarding driver fatigue, especially for drivers of commercial vehicles. In this study, we have tried to analyze quantitative fatigue degree of urban bus drivers by measuring their physiological signals. The investigation is made up of the following approaches: a traditional questionnaire survey and video-ethnographic method with 4-way cameras. The close-circuit cameras are installed to observe the upper and lower body of real drivers when they are in driving or even resting. This approach can help to understand urban bus drivers' behaviors and fatigue-related issues. Based on the video-ethnographic investigation results above, we have got certain patterns of drivers.

Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle consists of internal combustion engine, engine clutch, motor, automatic transmission, Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), and battery. Due to hybridizations such as using engine clutch to disengage the internal combustion engine and omitting torque converter from the automatic transmission to increase fuel economy, drivability will not be same as conventional vehicle. To ensure drivability comparable to conventional vehicle, dynamic simulation has been utilized to foresee the drivability issues for the proposed hybrid system and ideas for improvements are tested in simulation. CoSimulation of AMESim vehicle model and Simulink Hybrid Control Unit (HCU) model has been used to test and improve HCU logic.

Development of Mild Hybrid City Bus with a Single Voltage Source of 28 V

The most popular issues nowadays in the automotive industry include reduction of environmental impacts by emission materials from automobiles as well as improvement of fuel economy. This paper deals with development of a ¡mild-hybrid¡ system for a city bus as an effort to increase fuel economy in a relatively reasonable expense. Three different technical tactics are employed; an engine is shut down at an engine idle state, a vehicle kinetic energy when the bus is decelerated is re-saved to a battery in the form of electricity, and finally the radiator cooling fan is operated by an electric motor using the saved electric energy with an optimal speed control. It has been demonstrated through the driving tests in a specific city mode, ¡Suwon city mode¡, that an average fuel economy is improved more than 12%, and the system can be a feasible choice in a city bus running in a city mode experiencing many stop and go¡s.
