Conventionally, tire development is a part of the physical development process, which starts only after the proto vehicle build. 30 to 40% of the project lifecycle is already completed by the time the physical tire is evaluated subjectively for the first time. This limits the number of design iterations possible for design optimization of the tire. Also, the process involved in designing, building and testing tire design proposals is quite exhaustive, which causes the tire development process to lag other chassis system development compromising the balance among ride-comfort, handling, energy consumption and durability performance. Even with availability of objective targets and estimated characteristics in early stage of the project, such as Cornering stiffness, Rolling Resistance, Relaxation length etc., lack of subjective evaluation limits the understanding of the tire performance. It is majorly due to its non-linear characteristics and perception it provides to the driver.
