Research on Thermal Recession Compensation Method of Disc Brakes

If a car is braked frequently or at high speed, the thermal decay of brake system performance appears, which reduces the braking performance of the car. To compensate brake moment reduction during braking at thermal decay of brake system, a compensation strategy of brake moment is designed by using “feedforward +PID feedback” to pressure at wheel braking cylinder. The trigger and exit conditions of the strategy for the wheel cylinder pressure are proposed based on the threshold. A vehicle model consisting braking system is established if a vehicle runs at straight line, and the braking distance and braking acceleration are estimated, the results shown that the thermal decay compensation control strategy proposed in this paper can reduce the braking distance and braking time.

Modeling of Gas Charging and Discharging for Airbag Suspension System and Control of Height Adjustment

Taking a closed airbag suspension system as studying objects, the nonlinear dynamic model of the reservoir, compressor, solenoid valve, pipeline and air spring is established. The compressor exhaust volume, solenoid valve flow rate and air spring charging and discharging rate are calculated and compared with experiment to validate the model. Taking pressure difference and height adjustment rate under different working conditions of an airbag suspension as control measures, a control strategy is developed based on the established nonlinear dynamic model. The result indicates that when the vehicle is in curb weight, design weight and GVW (gross vehicle weight), the working time of the compressor can be reduced by 13.6%, 15.1% and 46.5%, respectively, compared with the conventional mode, during a height adjustment cycle. Then a state observer is proposed to estimate the steady-height for reducing the disturbance of measured height from road excitation.

Experiment and Analysis of Mechanical Semi-Active Hydraulic Engine Mount with Double Inertia Tracks

Electromagnetic semi-active hydraulic engine mount (HEM) with double inertia tracks can realize the opening and closing of the inertia tracks through the control of electromagnetic actuator, so as to meet the needs of vibration isolation in different working conditions, but the cost is high. In this paper, without using electromagnetic actuator, a mechanical semi-active HEM with double inertia tracks is designed and manufactured with simple structure and low cost. In this study, the feature of mechanical semi-active HEM with double inertia tracks is that a baffle-current limiting column structure is added in the inertia track. Under different excitation amplitudes, the baffle-current limiting column structure can open and close the inertia track passively. Several mechanical semi-active HEM with double-inertia tracks samples and conventional inertia tracks HEM samples are manufactured and the dynamic characteristics of these samples under low frequency excitation are tested.

Two-Level LPV Model Based Sliding Mode Predictive Control with Actuator Input Delay for Vehicle Yaw Stability

For the improvement of the vehicle yaw stability, this paper studies the control problem of the active front steering (AFS) system with actuator input delay. A novel sliding mode predictive control method to handle actuator input delay is proposed for the AFS system. Firstly, considering the nonlinearities of the vehicle system, a linear parameter varying vehicle system model with two-level structure is proposed to capture the vehicle dynamic behaviors. Secondly, to deal with the issues of actuator input delay and system constraints, a novel sliding mode predictive control method is put forward. In the process of controller design, a sliding mode control algorithm is employed for the improvement of the robustness of the control system, and then a model predictive control algorithm is employed to deal with system constraints.

Numerical Investigation on the Internal Flow Field of Electronic Expansion Valve as the Throttle Element

As one of the key components of the heat pump system, the electronic expansion valve mainly plays the role of throttling and reducing pressure in the heat pump system. The refrigerant flowing through the orifice will produce complex phase change. It is of great significance to study the internal flow field by means of CFD calculations. Firstly, a three-dimensional fluid model is established and the mesh is divided. Secondly, the phase change model is selected, the material is defined and the boundary conditions are determined. According to the principle of the fluid passing through thin-walled small holes, the flow characteristics of electronic expansion valve are theoretically analyzed. Then the flow characteristics of expansion valve are numerically calculated, and a bench for testing mass flow rate of the expansion valve is built. Then the theoretical value, CFD value and experimental value are compared to verify the correctness of the established three-dimensional fluid model.

Experimental Study on Hydraulic Pressure Feedforward and Feedback PID Control of I-EHB System with Friction Disturbance

This paper designs the important components and structure of the integrated electro-hydraulic brake system (I-EHB). Firstly, the simplified linear system is modeled, and the transfer function without considering the nonlinear disturbance such as system friction is derived, and the correctness of the linear system is preliminarily verified by AMESim. Then set up the I-EHB system test bench, and use the Stribeck friction model to identify the friction torque parameters in the static and kinetic friction stages of the system to obtain a more accurate friction model. Finally, based on the I-EHB system model of friction disturbance, a pressure-speed-current three-loop cascade PID controller is designed, and a feedforward controller based on the system model is added to form the control structure of “pressure feedforward compensation + pressure-speed-current closed-loop cascade PID”.

Friction Force Reduction for Electrical Terminals using Solution-Processed Reduced Graphene Oxide Coating

Electrical connectors and terminals are widely used in the automotive industry. It is desirable to mate the electrical connections using materials or coatings with low friction force to improve the ergonomics of the assembly process while maintaining good electrical conduction over the lifetime of the vehicle. We have previously shown that plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of graphene on gold (Au) and silver (Ag) terminals can significantly reduce the insertion force (friction force during the terminal insertion process). However, the cost of this deposition method is rather high, and its high temperature process (> 400 oC) makes it impractical for materials with low melting temperatures. For example, tin (Sn) coating with a melting temperature of 232 oC is commonly used in electrical connectors, which cannot sustain the high temperature process. In this study, reduced graphene oxide was prepared using a low-cost solution process and applied onto metallic terminals.

A Novel Kind of Proportional Electromagnetic Dynamic Vibration Absorber

A new proportional electromagnetic dynamic vibration absorber (EDVA) is proposed for control of engine vibration during idling. The device consists of an electromagnetic actuator attached to the primary structure through elastic element, where the driving force pair is implemented between the reaction-mass and the primary structure. The design of the proportional electromagnetic actuator is realized considering the geometric parameters of the core to achieve nearly constant magnetic force over a broad range of its dynamic displacement but proportional to square of the current. A methodology is proposed to achieve magnetic force proportional to square of current and consistent with the disturbance frequency. The proportional EDVA is subsequently applied to a single-degree-of-freedom primary system with an acceleration feedback control algorithm for attenuation of primary system vibration in a frequency band around the typical idling vibration frequencies.

A Comparison of Near-Field Acoustical Holography Methods Applied to Noise Source Identification

Near-Field Acoustical Holography (NAH) is an inverse process in which sound pressure measurements made in the near-field of an unknown sound source are used to reconstruct the sound field so that source distributions can be clearly identified. NAH was originally based on performing spatial transforms of arrays of measured pressures and then processing the data in the wavenumber domain, a procedure that entailed the use of very large microphone arrays to avoid spatial truncation effects. Over the last twenty years, a number of different NAH methods have been proposed that can reduce or avoid spatial truncation issues: for example, Statistically Optimized Near-Field Acoustical Holography (SONAH), various Equivalent Source Methods (ESM), etc.

Multi-Objective Optimization of Gerotor Port Design by Genetic Algorithm with Considerations on Kinematic vs. Actual Flow Ripple

The kinematic flow ripple for gerotor pumps is often used as a metric for comparison among different gearsets. However, compressibility, internal leakages, and throttling effects have an impact on the performance of the pump and cause the real flow ripple to deviate from the kinematic flow ripple. To counter this phenomenon, the ports can be designed to account for fluid effects to reduce the outlet flow ripple, internal pressure peaks, and localized cavitation due to throttling while simultaneously improving the volumetric efficiency. The design of the ports is typically heuristic, but a more advanced approach can be to use a numerical fluid model for virtual prototyping. In this work, a multi-objective optimization by genetic algorithm using an experimentally validated, lumped parameter, fluid-dynamic model is used to design the port geometry.

Continued Drive Signal Development for the Carbon Nanotube Thermoacoustic Loudspeaker Using Techniques Derived from the Hearing Aid Industry

Compared to moving coil loudspeakers, carbon nanotube (CNT) loudspeakers are extremely lightweight and are capable of creating sound over a broad frequency range (1 Hz to 100 kHz). The thermoacoustic effect that allows for this non-vibrating sound source is naturally inefficient and nonlinear. Signal processing techniques are one option that may help counteract these concerns. Previous studies have evaluated a hybrid efficiency metric, the ratio of the sound pressure level at a single point to the input electrical power. True efficiency is the ratio of output acoustic power to the input electrical power. True efficiency data are presented for two new drive signal processing techniques borrowed from the hearing aid industry. Spectral envelope decimation of an AC signal operates in the frequency domain (FCAC) and dynamic linear frequency compression of an AC signal operates in the time domain (TCAC). Each type of processing affects the true efficiency differently.

The Utility of Wide-Bandwidth Emulation to Evaluate Aircraft Power System Performance

The cost and complexity of aircraft power systems limit the number of integrated system evaluations that can be performed in hardware. As a result, evaluations are often performed using emulators to mimic components or subsystems. As an example, aircraft generation systems are often tested using an emulator that consists of a bank of resistors that are switched to represent the power draw of one or more actuators. In this research, consideration is given to modern wide bandwidth emulators (WBEs) that use power electronics and digital controls to obtain wide bandwidth control of power, current, or voltage. Specifically, this paper first looks at how well a WBE can emulate the impedance of a load when coupled to a real-time model. Capturing the impedance of loads and sources is important for accurately assessing the small-signal stability of a system.

Adaptive Robust Motion Control of an Excavator Hydraulic Hybrid Swing Drive

Over the last decade, a number of hybrid architectures have been proposed with the main goal of minimizing energy consumption of off-highway vehicles. One of the architecture subsets which has progressively gained attention is hydraulic hybrids for earth-moving equipment. Among these architectures, hydraulic hybrids with secondary-controlled drives have proven to be a reliable, implementable, and highly efficient alternative with the potential for up to 50% engine downsizing when applied to excavator truck-loading cycles. Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) robust linear control strategies have been developed by the authors' group with notable improvements on the control of the state of charge of the high pressure accumulator. Nonetheless, the challenge remains to improve the actuator position and velocity tracking.

Improved Model for Coupled Structural-Acoustic Modes of Tires

Experimental measurements of tire tread band vibration have provided direct evidence that higher order structural-acoustic modes exist in tires, not just the well-known fundamental acoustical mode. These modes display both circumferential and radial pressure variations within the tire's air cavity. The theory governing these modes has thus been investigated. A brief recapitulation of the previously-presented coupled structural-acoustical model based on a tensioned string approach will be given, and then an improved tire-acoustical model with a ring-like shape will be introduced. In the latter model, the effects of flexural and circumferential stiffness are considered. This improved model accounts for propagating in-plane vibration in addition to the essentially structure-borne flexural wave and the essentially airborne longitudinal wave accounted for in the previous model. The longitudinal structure-borne wave “cuts on” at the tire's circumferential ring frequency.

Computations of Soot and NO in Lifted Flames under Diesel Conditions

In this work, computations of reacting diesel jets, including soot and NO, are carried out for a wide range of conditions by employing a RANS model in which an unsteady flamelet progress variable (UFPV) sub-model is employed to represent turbulence/chemistry interactions. Soot kinetics is represented using a chemical mechanism that models the growth of soot precursors starting from a single aromatic ring by hydrogen abstraction and carbon (acetylene) addition and NO is modeled using the kinetics from a sub-mechanism of GRI-Mech 3.0. Tracer particles are used to track the residence time of the injected mass in the jet. For the soot and NO computations, this residence time is used to track the progression of the soot and NO reactions in time. The conditions selected reflect changes in injection pressure, chamber temperature, oxygen concentration, and density, and orifice diameter.

Frequency Conversion Controlled Vapor Recovery System by Temperature and Flow Signals: Model Design and Parameters Optimization

Current gasoline-gas vapor recovery system is incomplete, for it cannot adjust the vapor-liquid ratio automatically due to the change of working temperature. To solve this problem, this paper intends to design a new system and optimize its parameters. In this research, variables control method is used for tests while linear regression is used for data processing. This new system moves proportion valve away and adds a DSP control module, a frequency conversion device, and a temperature sensor. With this research, it is clearly reviewed that the vapor-liquid ratio should remains 1.0 from 0 °C to 20 °C as its working temperature, be changed into 1.1 from 20 °C to 25 °C, be changed into 1.2 from 25 °C to 30 °C, and be changed into 1.3 when the working temperature is above 30 °C.

A Novel Pressure-Feedback Based Adaptive Control Method to Damp Instabilities in Hydraulic Machines

Excessive vibration and poor controllability occur in many mobile fluid power applications, with negative consequences as concerns operators' health and comfort as well as machine safety and productivity. This paper addresses the problem of reducing oscillations in fluid power machines presenting a novel control technique of general applicability. Strong nonlinearities of hydraulic systems and the unpredictable operating conditions of the specific application (e.g. uneven ground, varying loads, etc.) are the main challenges to the development of satisfactory general vibration damping methods. The state of the art methods are typically designed as a function of the specific application, and in many cases they introduce energy dissipation and/or system slowdown. This paper contributes to this research by introducing an energy efficient active damping method based on feedback signals from pressure sensors mounted on the flow control valve block.

Design of a High-Bandwidth, Low-Cost Hydrostatic Absorption Dynamometer with Electronic Load Control

A low-cost hydrostatic absorption dynamometer has been developed for small to medium sized engines. The dynamometer was designed and built by students to support student projects and educational activities. The availability of such a dynamometer permits engine break-in cycles, performance testing, and laboratory instruction in the areas of engines, fuels, sensors, and data acquisition. The dynamometer, capable of loading engines up to 60kW at 155Nm and 3600rpm, incorporates a two-section gear pump and an electronically operated proportional pressure control valve to develop and control the load. A bypass valve permits the use of only one pump section, allowing increased fidelity of load control at lower torque levels. Torque is measured directly on the drive shaft with a strain gage. Torque and speed signals are transmitted by an inductively-powered collar mounted to the dynamometer drive shaft. Pressure transducers at the pump inlet and pump outlet allow secondary load measurement.

Regenerative Hydraulic Topographies using High Speed Valves

This paper presents hydraulic topographies using a network of valves to achieve better energy efficiency, reliability, and performance. The Topography with Integrated Energy Recovery (TIER) system allows the valves and actuators to reconfigure so that flow from assistive loads on actuators can be used to move actuators with resistive loads. Many variations are possible, including using multiple valves with either a single pump/motor or with multiple pump/motors. When multiple pump/motors are used, units of different displacements can be chosen such that units are controlled to minimize time operating at low displacement, thus increasing overall system efficiency. Other variations include configurations allowing open loop or closed loop pump/motors to be used, the use of fixed displacement pump/motors, or the ability to store energy in an accumulator. This paper gives a system level overview and summarizes the hydraulic systems using the TIER approach.

Optimization for Shared-Autonomy in Automotive Swarm Environment

The need for greater capacity in automotive transportation (in the midst of constrained resources) and the convergence of key technologies from multiple domains may eventually produce the emergence of a “swarm” concept of operations. The swarm, a collection of vehicles traveling at high speeds and in close proximity, will require management techniques to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable vehicle interactions. We propose a shared-autonomy approach in which the strengths of both human drivers and machines are employed in concert for this management. A fuzzy logic-based control implementation is combined with a genetic algorithm to select the shared-autonomy architecture and sensor capabilities that optimize swarm operations.
