Towards High Accuracy Parking Slot Detection for Automated Valet Parking System

Highly accurate parking slot detection methods are crucial for Automated Valet Parking (AVP) systems, to meet their demanding safety and functional requirements. While previous efforts have mostly focused on the algorithms’ capabilities to detect different types of slots under varying conditions, i.e. the detection rate, their accuracy has received little attention at this time. This paper highlights the importance of trustworthy slot detection methods, which address both the detection rate and the detection accuracy. To achieve this goal, an accurate slot detection method and a reliable ground-truth slot measurement method have been proposed in this paper. First, based on a 2D laser range finder, datapoints of obstacle vehicles on both sides of a slot have been collected and preprocessed. Second, the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm has been improved to efficiently cluster these unevenly-distributed datapoints.

Improved Kmeans Algorithm for Detection in Traffic Scenarios

In the Kmeans cluster segmentation used in traffic scenes, there are often zone optimization and over-segmentation problems caused by the algorithm randomly assigning the initial cluster center. In order to improve the target extraction effect in traffic road scenes, this article proposes an improved Kmeans (IM-Kmeans) method. Firstly, search for the histogram peaks of the whole pixels based on hue, saturation, value (HSV) image, and find the initial cluster centers’ positions and number. Secondly, the noise points which are far away from the center pixel are removed, and then the pixels are classified into the nearest cluster center according to its value. Finally, after the clustering model reaches convergence, the area-clustering method is used for another classification to solve the over-segmentation problem. The simulation and experimental comparisons show that the IM-Kmeans algorithm has higher clustering accuracy than the traditional Kmeans algorithm.

Test and Analysis of Electromagnetic Noise of an Electric Motor in a Pure Electric Car

Compared with the low-frequency ignition order of mechanical and combustion noise of an internal combustion engine, the noise of electric drive assembly of electric vehicles is mainly the high-frequency whining noise generated by electromagnetic forces of motors and gear meshing of reducers, as well as the high-frequency umbrella-shape noise generated by DC/AC pulse width modulation. Although the radiated sound power of these high frequency noise is far less than that of an internal combustion engine, the high frequency noise of the motor and the reducer is subjectively quite annoying. This paper studies the characteristics of electromagnetic noise of a permanent magnet synchronous motor in an electric car. By testing and analyzing of noise sources of an electric motor in the car and on a test rig, the spatial order characteristics and amplitude-frequency characteristics of the electromagnetic forces are revealed. The noise orders are multiples of the number of motor poles.

Sound Quality Prediction Modelling for the Transient Sound of Vehicle Door Latch Closure

Door latch closure noise has contribution on sound quality of vehicle door slam sound. This paper focuses on the modelling of sound quality for door latch closure sound. 24 various latch closure sound samples were recorded to be evaluated subjectively. A novel Dynamic Paired Comparison Method (DPCM) was introduced for subjective evaluation. By eliminating the redundant comparison pairs the DPCM dramatically reduced the evaluation work load comparing to the traditional Paired Comparison Method (PCM). Correlation between subjective evaluation results and psychoacoustic metrics was analyzed to find out the most relevant metrics as inputs for the subsequent prediction model. Besides, the shudder effect induced by multi-impact of latch components during closing movement was also found strongly affecting the subjective perception of door latch closure sound.

Performance Testing and Analysis of Multi-Channel Active Control System for Vehicle Interior Noise Using Adaptive Notch Filter

It is considered that slow convergence speed and large calculation amount of commonly used adaptive algorithm in the active control system for vehicle interior noise yield noise reduction performance and hardware requirements problems. In this paper, a 4-channel active control of vehicle interior noise based on adaptive notch filter is established, and road test is carried out to test and analyze the performance of the control system. Firstly, the general mathematic model of the multi-channel active control system based on adaptive notch filter is established. The computational complexity of the algorithm is analyzed and compared with that of the FXLMS algorithm. Secondly, a hardware-in-the-loop test bench based on multi-channel adaptive notch filter is set up, to measure the noise reduction performance of ANC system under various working conditions.

Automotive security has become one of important topics in recent years under new automotive Electronic and Electrical Architecture (EEA). With the development of Intelligent Connected Vehicle (ICV), it has become possible to hack an automotive through in-vehicle networks. The introduction of Information Communications Technology (ICT) brings more risk threats to automotive. Researchers have shown that an attacker can easily tamper with many automotive functions via On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) or In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI). In order to protect automotive against malicious attacks, automotive security risks were analyzed and then security mechanisms based on network firewall were designed in this paper. Automotive network firewall is a security system that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffics of automotive based on predetermined security rules. The main functions of network firewall include packet filter, anti-DoS and access control.

Numerical Analysis and Optimization Design of a Centrifugal Compressor’s Volute for PEM Fuel Cell Vehicle

Centrifugal compressors used in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell systems are different from turbochargers in internal combustion engines, because they are required to work at high speed, low mass flow rate, narrow range which nears surge boundaries. In order to meet these requirements, a centrifugal compressor’s volute is designed, analyzed and optimized on its cross-section area, shape of volute tongue and tapered angle of exit. The numerical results show that surge boundary of the compressor is influenced by spiral area significantly and that volute tongue has a major impact on aerodynamic performances at high mass flow rates.

A Steerable Curvature Approach for Efficient Executable Path Planning for on-Road Autonomous Vehicle

A rapid path-planning algorithm that generates drivable paths for an autonomous vehicle operating in structural road is proposed in this paper. Cubic B-spline curve is adopted to generating smooth path for continuous curvature and, more, parametric basic points of the spline is adjusted to controlling the curvature extremum for kinematic constraints on vehicle. Other than previous approaches such as inverse kinematics, model-based prediction postprocess approach or closed-loop forward simulation, using the kinematics model in each iteration of path for smoothing and controlling curvature leading to time consumption increasing, our method characterized the vehicle curvature constraint by the minimum length of segment line, which synchronously realized constraint and smooth for generating path. And Differ from the path of robot escaping from a maze, the intelligent vehicle traveling on road in structured environments needs to meet the traffic rules.

Transfer Path Analysis and Low-Frequency Vibration Reduction by Locally Resonant Phononic Crystal

The motor has vibration characteristics of order and multi-band in the frequency domain, which is different from the internal combustion engine when it is used as the vehicle’s drive. These characteristics cannot be briefly attenuated by general methods, but make the phononic crystal (PC) an ideal solution to eliminate the vibration transmission of the motor, because the concentrated vibration peak can easily be blocked by the bandgap. In this paper, one dimensional locally resonant phononic crystal (LRPC) which has low-frequency bandgaps are arranged on the automotive subframe to absorbing vibration. The partial coherence analysis is used to analyze the transfer characteristic of vibration on the subframe. Then, 6 main paths are selected from the 18 vibration transmission paths, based on its high ratio of partial coherence coefficient in a certain frequency, and the arranged position, the spring stiffness and the resonator’s mass of the LRPCs are chosen based on this result.

Experimental Investigation of the Bi-Stable Behavior in the Wake of a Notchback MIRA Model

This paper reports an experimental investigation of the wake flow behind a 1/12 scale notchback MIRA model at Re = UL/ν = 6.9×105 (where U is free-stream velocity, L the length of the model and ν viscosity). Focus is placed on the flow asymmetry over the backlight and decklid. Forty pressure taps are used to map the surface pressure distribution on the backlight and decklid, while the wake topology is investigated by means of 2D Particle Image Velocimetry. The analysis of the instantaneous pressure signals over the notch configuration clearly shows that the pressure presents a bi-stable behavior in the spanwise direction, characterized by the switches between two preferred values, which is not found in the vertical direction.

Parameters Analyses and Identification for Rubber Bush Based on Theoretical Dynamic Model with Effects of Temperature and Preload

A series connection of the KVBC (Kelvin-Voigt and Bouc-wen) theoretical model of rubber bush in automobile suspension is established. The numerical calculation model is also developed through Matlab/simulation and 9 parameters are identified. Experiments are conducted on the rubber bush on a bench for dynamic and static characteristics and to supply appropriate and reliable data for parameter identification. Based on this, preload and temperature are taken into consideration in an ordinary KVBC model as two important additional factors. As a result, it leads to developing a novel model with new parameter identification, which is validated under different conditions. This new modeling method of rubber bush has three advantages. First, it shows improved accuracy for solving non-linear problems in a multi-body calculation, which is useful for researchers and vehicle engineers.

Influence Mechanism of Electromechanical Parameters on Transient Vibration of Electric Wheel System

Electric wheel systems of in-wheel motor driven vehicles consist of the motor controller, in-wheel motor and tire-suspension assembly. The coupling between the electromagnetic excitation and elastic structure gives rise to electromechanical dynamic issues. As for the structural layout of the electric wheel system, the driving motor is directly connected to the wheel without torsion dampers or transmission in the driveline, thus making the electric wheel structure a weak damping system. Moreover, the driving torque of electric wheel can change rapidly in various conditions of vehicle. As a result, the transient vibration problem becomes one of the key electromechanical dynamic issues in the electric wheel system. To investigate this problem, the electromechanical coupling model of the electric wheel system is established first. Then the transient responses of the electric wheel under abrupt changes of the driving torque are simulated.

Numeric Study on Torsional Characteristics of Dual Mass Flywheel with Circumferential ARC Spring

The rapid development of automotive technology has promoted the application of higher efficiency engines, while also putting higher requirements on the control of crankshaft torsional vibration. The traditional clutch driven disc torsional vibration damper can no longer meet the current new vibration and noise reduction requirements. Under these circumstances adopting dual mass flywheel (DMF) could be an efficient measure to reduce powertrain torsional fluctuations. For the sake of studying the torsional characteristics of DMF, a dual mass flywheel with circumstance arc spring (DMF-CS) is taken as the research subject. Firstly, According to lumped mass model, a multi-degree of freedom torsional vibration model of DMF-CS is established, which takes the mutual conversion of dry friction and viscous friction into consideration. Then, the overall and partial torsion characteristics of dual mass flywheel are obtained through numerical analysis.

A New Method of Comprehensive Evaluation Research and Application on Vehicle Engine Exhaust System

During current design process of vehicle engine exhaust system, the frequently-used approach mainly concerns an individual component, which usually results in not meeting the overall design requirements or unreasonable design parameters. Here a concept of comprehensive evaluation metrics for vehicle engine exhaust system was established, of which a new weight factor assignment method was proposed, named change rate method, as the core of evaluation system to be especially studied. Taking muffler as an instance, six weight factor assignment schemes were adopted to compare with each other. And the rationality and practicability of the change rate assignment method was verified by the muffler noise experiments. The results show that, the change rate method makes the weight assignment more scientific and rigorous. And the new method can reflect the wishes of designers and completely displays the performance comparison and evaluation between schemes.

One New Transient Transfer Path Analyses of Vehicle Interior Vibration Excited by Vertical Speed Hump

Vertical excitations from obstacles on public road are typical and likely to increase vehicle interior vibration through major paths of wheel spindle-suspension-body. A new transient transfer path analysis (TTPA) methodology is presented combining the substructure reverse matrix method based on FRFs with operational excitation. Additionally, a new kind of experimental method is applied to solve an engineering problem and also validates the TTPA theory above. There are three steps in all. Firstly, vibration in Z direction of wheel spindle was collected in one proving ground and represented on MTS 320 road simulator bench after many times of iteration of piston signals. This procedure guarantees excitation decoupling in one certain direction so it leads to accurate frequency response functions (FRFs) under transient shocking excitation. Secondly, the new transient transfer path analysis approach was used to calculate vibration contribution of wheel-suspension-body.

Investigation on Dry-clutch Transmissibility Characteristic for Vehicle Launch Shudder

Vehicle launch shudder is the terminology used in automotive industry to describe severe longitudinal oscillation during clutch engagement under start-up condition. This paper presents and implements detailed investigation for dry-clutch engagement and disengagement process, in order to deeply analyze vehicle launch shudder phenomenon which seriously deteriorates ride comfort. Firstly, diaphragm spring and cushion spring and link strip, which are three elastic components related to dry-clutch engagement and disengagement process in axial direction, are studied for their elastic properties, respectively, to obtain relationship between load and deflection. The elastic properties of these three elastic components are taken into considerations to establish nonlinear relationship between release bearing travel and clutch clamp force.

Gear Tooth Modification of EV Powertrain for Vibration and Noise Reduction

In order to research the vibration and noise reduction in pure electric vehicle power-train, a comprehensive work is to simulate the power-train incentive of a high-speed pure electric vehicle, and indicates significant impact of gear mesh system on the power-train NVH performance. Therefore, it is necessary to further study the impact of meshing gear system on electric vehicle power-train vibration and noise performance and seek reasonable methods to reduce the vibration and noise. In this paper, a typical pure electric vehicle's powertrain was used to conduct vibration and noise dynamic simulation. Firstly, the power train model was established considering the gear meshing stiffness, transmission errors, bearing factors and shell flexible, then the vibration and sound radiation dynamic response of power-train was simulated. Based on the accuracy of prediction model, a gear tooth modification was carried out for vibration and noise optimization.

Vibration Analysis of Series-parallel Hybrid Powertrain System under Typical Working Condition and Modes

Powertrain system of series-parallel hybrid vehicle contains multiple excitation sources like engine, motor and generator. The reduction of noise and vibration is quite difficult during multiplex working modes or the switch of modes. Aiming at Series-parallel hybrid powertrain system which contains engine, motor and planetary gear subsystems, this paper considered a typical working condition which is based on the power control strategy and established the torsional vibration mechanical model of hybrid powertrain system. The inherent characteristics and transient vibration response of the electric mode, hybrid mode and parking charging mode were studied and it was discovered that the repetitive frequency of the powertrain system under the three working modes is the same which is only related to inertia and meshing stiffness of planetary gear system. The non-repetitive frequency and corresponding vibration modes under the electric mode and parking charging mode are both close.

Concurrent Optimization of Ply Orientation and Thickness for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Laminated Engine Hood

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have gained particular interests due to their high specific modulus, high strength, lightweight and resistance to environment. In the automotive industry, numerous studies have been ongoing to replace the metal components with CFRP for the purpose of weight saving. One of the significant benefits of CFRP laminates is the ability of tailoring fiber orientation and ply thickness to meet the acceptable level of structural performance with little waste of material capability. This study focused on the concurrent optimization of ply orientation and thickness for CFRP laminated engine hood, which was based on the gradient-based discrete material and thickness optimization (DMTO) method. Two manufactural constraints, namely contiguity and intermediate void constraints, were taken into account in the optimization problem to reduce the potential risk of cracking matrix of CFRP.

An Online Fault Detection and Isolation Method for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine

An online fault detection and isolation (FDI) method for several common sensor faults and even demagnetization of PMSM is proposed by combining model-based and signal analysis technology. To begin with, the field reconstruction method (FRM) of PMSM is employed to obtain the flux residuals which are used as the criterion of fault detection. Then, the flux residuals are transformed by multi sequence harmonic synchronous rotating transformation and inputted into low pass filters (LPFs) in order to obtain the DC components. Last, offset and gain faults of the two phase current sensors, offset fault of the rotor angle sensor and permanent magnet (PM) demagnetization can be isolated by comparing the DC components and preset thresholds. The detection and isolation strategy of PMSM is validated by motor controller hardware in motor bench tests.
