Digital Twin Based Multi-Vehicle Cooperative Warning System on Mountain Roads

2024-04-09
2024-01-1999
Compared with urban areas, the road surface in mountainous areas generally has a larger slope, larger curvature and narrower width, and the vehicle may roll over and other dangers on such a road. In the case of limited driver information, if the two cars on the mountain road approach fast, it is very likely to occur road blockage or even collision. Multi-vehicle cooperative control technology can integrate the driving data of nearby vehicles, expand the perception range of vehicles, assist driving through multi-objective optimization algorithm, and improve the driving safety and traffic system reliability. Most existing studies on cooperative control of multiple vehicles is mainly focused on urban areas with stable environment, while ignoring complex conditions in mountainous areas and the influence of driver status. In this study, a digital twin based multi-vehicle cooperative warning system was proposed to improve the safety of multiple vehicles on mountain roads.

2024-01-2003
As a key tool to maintain urban cleanliness and improve the road environment, road cleaning vehicles play an important role in improving the quality of life of residents. However, the traditional road cleaning vehicle requires the driver to monitor the situation of road garbage at all times and manually operate the cleaning process, resulting in an increase in the driver 's work intensity. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a road garbage recognition algorithm based on improved YOLOv5, which aims to reduce labor consumption and improve the efficiency of road cleaning. Firstly, the lightweight network MobileNet-V3 is used to replace the backbone feature extraction network of the YOLOv5 model. The number of parameters and computational complexity of the model are greatly reduced by replacing the standard convolution with the deep separable convolution, which enabled the model to have faster reasoning speed while maintaining higher accuracy.

2023-01-7109
Decision-making of lane-change for autonomous vehicles faces challenges due to the behavioral differences among human drivers in dynamic traffic environments. To enhance the performances of autonomous vehicles, this paper proposes a game theoretic decision-making method that considers the diverse Social Value Orientations (SVO) of drivers. To begin with, trajectory features are extracted from the NGSIM dataset, followed by the application of Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) to determine the reward preferences exhibited by drivers with distinct Social Value Orientation (SVO) during their decision-making process. Subsequently, a reward function is formulated, considering the factors of safety, efficiency, and comfort. To tackle the challenges associated with interaction, a Stackelberg game model is employed.

A Sparse Spatiotemporal Transformer for Detecting Driver Distracted Behaviors

2023-04-11
2023-01-0835
At present, the development of autonomous driving technology is still immature, and there is still a long way until fully driverless vehicles. Therefore, the state of the driver is still an important factor affecting traffic safety, and it is of great significance to detect the driver’s distracted behavior. In the task of driver distracted behavior detection, some characteristics of driver behavior in the cockpit can be further utilized to improve the detection performance. Compared with general human behaviors, driving behaviors are confined to enclosed space and are far less diverse. With this in mind, we propose a sparse spatiotemporal transformer which extracts local spatiotemporal features by segmenting the video at the low level of the model, and filters out local key spatiotemporal information associated with larger attention values based on the attention map in the middle layer, so as to enhance the high-level global semantic features.

2022-01-7098
Accurate surrounding vehicle motion prediction is critical for enabling safe, high quality autonomous driving decision-making and motion planning. Aiming at the problem that the current deep learning-based trajectory prediction methods are not accurate and effective for extracting the interaction between vehicles and the road environment information, we design a target vehicle intention-aware dual attention network (IDAN), which establishes a multi-task learning framework combining intention network and trajectory prediction network, imposing dual constraints. The intention network generates an intention encoding representing the driver’s intention information. It inputs it into the attention module of the trajectory prediction network to assist the trajectory prediction network to achieve better prediction accuracy.

2022-01-7078
At present, most of the game decision lane-changing models only consider the state data of the vehicle at the current moment. However, the driving style has a significant impact on the vehicle trajectories, which should be taken into account in the lane-changing process. Moreover, most of the game models are static and do not take into account the sequence of the vehicle lane-changing. This paper proposed a Stackelberg-game-based vehicle lane-changing model considering driving style. Firstly, the NGSIM public dataset is selected for this research and the data screen flow is processed. The K-means algorithm is applied to exchange data clustering. Based on the analysis of vehicle lane changing features under different driving style, the characteristics of the corresponding data under different style are extracted. The quantic-polynomial programming algorithm is used to generate a vehicle lane changing trajectory under different driving styles.

2022-01-5074
Dangerous driving behavior will cause serious traffic accidents, which will not only threaten life and property but also cause traffic congestion and reduce road capacity. Speed detection is an important detection method to identify whether a driver is driving dangerously. Traditional speed detection methods need additional sensors, which will increase the cost of speed measurement. This paper proposes a vehicle speed estimation algorithm based on the imaginary projection plane (IPP). The IPP will be established according to the height, field angle, and vertical tilt angle of the camera and will be used to establish the mapping relationship between the world coordinates and image coordinates of the vehicle. By combining YOLOv4 and DeepSORT, the vehicle license plate is detected and tracked, and the center point of the vehicle license plate is taken as the feature point of vehicle speed estimation. The vehicle speed is estimated according to the IPP.

2021-01-0859
Road traffic accidents resulting from alcohol-impaired driving are increasing globally despite several measures, currently in place, to curb the trend. For this reason, recent research aims at integrating alcohol early-detection systems and driving simulator experiments to identify intoxicated drivers. However, driving simulator experiments on drunk driving have focused mostly on male participants than female drivers whose characteristics have scarcely been explored. Hence in this paper, vehicle dynamic control inputs on steering, braking, and acceleration performance of 75 licensed female drivers with an upshot of alcohol at four different blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels (0%, 0.03%, 0.05%, and 0.08%) were investigated. The participants completed simulated driving in a fixed-based simulator experiment coupled with real-time ecological scenarios to extract discrete responses.

2021-01-0910
Heavy commercial vehicle drivers may frequently shift gears when they are running on long and downhill roads in mountainous area. In order to improve driving safety and fuel economy, it is necessary to predict the slope of the road ahead in real time and correct the driver's shift strategy in time. At present, the road slope estimation is mainly based on the real-time estimation of the road slope at the current position of the vehicle based on the vehicle driving information obtained by the sensors, but the road slope of the road section that the vehicle is about to reach has not been predicted. In this paper, based on the road slope information of the road section that the driver has driven through, combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) information and road design standards, the slope of the road section ahead is predicted.

2021-01-0978
The tank truck has a wide range of application. When the liquid in the tank is not fully loaded, the lateral movement of the liquid in the tank will shift the center of gravity of the tank truck and make the vehicle less safe. It is easy to roll over when the tank truck is turning. This study combines the vehicle dynamic characteristics and geographic information, which gives the driver safe speed and safe braking distance tips before turning, to reduce the traffic accidents caused by driver's misjudgment. The dynamic model of the tank truck is established, through collecting the real-time information of the vehicle, the vehicle load and braking torque are calculated by the relevant dynamic model. The system needs to measure the deviation of the center of gravity in the tank truck movement process, and the deviation of the center of gravity has a great influence on the safety speed.

2021-01-0335
The automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is an important part of automobile active safety, which can effectively reduce rear-end collision accidents and protect drivers' safety through active braking. AEB system has been included in many countries' new car assessment programme as the test content of active safety. In view of obviously deficiencies of the existing AEB control algorithm in avoiding longitudinal collision at high speed, it is proposed to an optimized model of the minimum safe distance for rear-end collision prevention on high-speed road in order to improve the accuracy of AEB system. Considering the influence of road adhesion coefficient and human comfort on the maximum braking deceleration, it is established to a more accurate and reasonable AEB system to avoid collision for expressway. The collision avoidance strategy is verified by simulation software.

There are a large number of curves and slopes in the mountainous areas. Unreasonable acceleration and deceleration in these areas will increase the burden of the brake system and the fuel consumption of the vehicle. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a speed planning and promotion system for commercial vehicles in mountainous areas. The wind, slope, curve, engine brake, and rolling resistances are analyzed to establish the thermal model of the brake system. Based on the thermal model, the safe speed of the brake system is acquired. The maximum safe speed on the turning section is generated by the vehicle dynamic model. And the economic speed is calculated according to the fuel consumption model. The planning speed is provided based on these models. This system can guide the driver to handle the vehicle speed more reasonably.

2021-01-5017
Based on the fuzzy inference system, it constructs a discretionary lane-changing decision model for different types of preceding vehicles and compares and analyzes the parameter differences of their input membership functions. According to the driver questionnaire survey, the model uses three parameters that drivers can easily percept as the model input—preceding vehicle distance in the current lane, preceding vehicle distance in the target lane, and following-vehicle distance in the target lane—uses Next-Generation Simulation (NGSIM) vehicle trajectory data to optimize the input membership functions of models based on genetic algorithm according to different vehicle lane-changing trajectory data to analyze the impact of the preceding vehicle type before lane change to the intelligent lane-changing decision.

Discretionary lane changing is commonly seen in highway driving. Intelligent vehicles are expected to change lanes discretionarily for better driving experience and higher traffic efficiency. This study proposed to optimize the decision-making and trajectory-planning process so that intelligent vehicles made lane changes not only with driving safety taken into account, but also with the goal to improve driving comfort as well as to meet the driver’ s expectation. The mechanism of how various factors contribute to the driver’s intention to change lanes was studied by carrying out a series of driving simulation experiments, and a Lane-Changing Intention Generation (LCIG) model based on Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) was proposed.

2020-01-0133
In automatic driving application, the velocity planner can be considered as a key factor to ensure the safety and comfort. One of the most important tasks of the velocity planner is to simulate the velocity characteristics of human drivers. In this paper, two Driver In-the-Loop (DIL) experiments are designed to explain velocity characteristics of human drivers. In the first experiment, static obstacles are placed on both sides of the straight road to shorten the cross range that vehicles can driver across. Moreover, different cross ranges are set to study the influence of the steering wheel error. In the second experiment, velocity characteristics are investigated under the condition of different road widths and curvatures in a U-turn road contour. In both tests, different drivers’ preview behavior is analyzed through the operation of throttle, braking, and steering.

With the increase of car ownership and the complex and crowded parking environment, it is difficult for drivers to complete the parking operation quickly and accurately, which may cause traffic accidents such as vehicle collisions and road jams because of poor parking skills. The emergence of an automatic parking system can help drivers park safely and reduce the occurrence of safety accidents. Driver Distraction Detection with a Two-stream Convolutional Neural Network

2020-04-14
2020-01-1039
Driver distraction detection is crucial to driving safety when autonomous vehicles are co-piloted. Recognizing drivers’ behaviors that are highly related with distraction from real-time video stream is widely acknowledged as an effective approach mainly due to its non-intrusiveness. In recently years, deep learning neural networks have been adopted to by-pass the procedure of designing features artificially, which used to be the major downside of computer-vision based approaches. However, the detection accuracy and generalization ability is still not satisfying since most deep learning models extracts only spatial information contained in images. This research develops a driver distraction model based on a two-stream, spatial and temporal, convolutional neural network (CNN).

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is an important measure to proactively guarantee vehicle safety. In this paper, the method of four-wheel hub-motor torque control is compared with the traditional single-wheel hydraulic brake control in ESC system. The control strategy adopts the hierarchical structure. In upper controller, the stability of the vehicle is identified by threshold method, the additional yaw moment control uses a way to get the moment including feedforward and feedback parts based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR). The medium controller is tire slip rate control, in order to get the optimal target slip rate from the upper additional yaw moment, a method of quadratic programming to optimize the longitudinal force is proposed for each wheel. The inputs of tire state for the magic tire model is introduced so as to calculate the target slip rate from the target longitudinal force.

Downhill Safety Assistant Driving System for Battery Electric Vehicles on Mountain Roads

2019-09-15
2019-01-2129
When driving in mountainous areas, vehicles often encounter downhill conditions. To ensure safe driving, it is necessary to control the speed of vehicles. For internal combustion engine vehicles, auxiliary brake such as engine brake can be used to alleviate the thermal load caused by the continuous braking of the friction brake. For battery electric vehicles (BEVs), regenerative braking can be used as auxiliary braking to improve brake safety. And through regenerative braking, energy can be partly converted into electrical energy and stored in accumulators (such as power batteries and supercapacitors), thus extending the mileage. However, the driver's line of sight in the mountains is limited, resulting in a certain degree of blindness in driving, so it is impossible to fully guarantee the safety and energy saving of downhill driving.
