Protective Coatings for Fasteners

2019-10-07
CURRENT
J1648_201910
This SAE Information Report is provided as an advisory guide. Careful discretion as to application is recommended. The content has been presented as accurately as possible, but responsiblity for its application lies with the user. It covers finishes applied to fasteners and related topics, corrosion resistance, lubricity, electrical grounding, ultraviolet light, and embrittlement. Table 1 lists these coatings and their properties so that finish selection can be reasonably made in accordance with known and anticipated fastener assembly applications. Application of protective coatings will affect fastener dimensions. This is especially critical for the thread fit of mating parts because the pitch diameter increases by four times the coating thickness. Explanation is covered in Section 5.

Torque-Tension Test Procedure for Steel Threaded Fasteners - Inch Series

2019-08-07
CURRENT
J174_201908
This test procedure is intended to provide a quality control method for checking torque-tension characteristics of non-prevailing torque type threaded steel fasteners 1/4 through 1 in nominal diameters. Realistically, torque-tension relationships for specific individual fastener assembly joints will vary due to the different joint parameters. Tests using actual joint components will be required to determine accurate torque-tension values for those conditions. For the metric version, see SAE J174M.

Steel Self-Drilling Tapping Screws

2014-09-09
WIP
J78
This SAE Standard covers the dimensional and general specifications, including performance requirements, for carbon steel self-drilling tapping screws suitable for use in general applications. It is the objective of this document to insure that carbon steel self-drilling tapping screws, by meeting the mechanical and performance requirements specified, shall drill a hole and form or cut mating threads in materials into which they are driven without deforming their own thread and without breaking during assembly. Appendix A is included to provide a recommended technique for measuring the case depth on the screws.

Dryseal Pipe Threads

2013-02-01
CURRENT
J476_201302
The Dryseal American Standard Taper Pipe Thread, the Dryseal American Fuel Internal Straight Pipe Thread and the Dryseal American Intermediate Internal Straight Pipe Thread covered by this standard conform with the American Standard ASA-B2.2. The Dryseal SAE-Short Taper Pipe Thread in this standard conforms with the Dryseal American Standard Taper Pipe Thread except for the length of thread, which is shortened for increased clearance and economy of material. The significant feature of the Dryseal thread is controlled truncation at the crest and root to assure metal to metal contact coincident with or prior to flank contact. Contact at the crest and root prevents spiral leakage and insures pressure-tight joints without the use of a lubricant or sealer. Lubricants, if not functionally objectionable, may be used to minimize the possibility of galling in assembly.

Table 3, Practical Length Increments and Ranges, indicates spring pin sizes. Information on availability of individual lengths in the various types, weights, and materials may be obtained from suppliers. The tolerance on length for coiled type spring pins shall be plus or minus 0.010 in. for sizes up to and including 5/16 in.; and plus or minus 0.015 in. for sizes larger than 5/16 in.

Mechanical and Material Requirements for Metric Externally Threaded Steel Fasteners

2001-03-12
HISTORICAL
J1199_200103
This SAE Standard covers the mechanical and material requirements for eight property classes of steel, externally threaded metric fasteners in sizes M1.6 through M36, inclusive, and suitable for use in automotive and related applications. Products included are bolts, screws, studs, U-bolts, preassembled screw and washer assemblies (sems), and products manufactured the same as sems except without washer. Products not covered are tapping screws, thread-rolling screws, and self-drilling screws. Mechanical and material requirements for these products are covered in other SAE documents. The term stud as referred to herein, applies to a cylindrical rod of moderate length, threaded on either one or both ends or throughout its entire length. It does not apply to headed, collared, or similar products which are more closely characterized by requirements shown herein for bolts. For specification purposes, this document treats U-bolts as studs.
