This SAE Standard gives methods for testing and evaluating performance of the SAE 100R series of hydraulic hose and hose assemblies (hose and attached end fittings) used in hydraulic fluid power systems. Specific tests and performance criteria for evaluating hose assemblies used in hydraulic service are in accordance with the requirements for hose in the respective specifications of SAE J517. This document further establishes a uniform means of testing and evaluating performance of hydraulic hose assemblies.

The procedures contained in this SAE Recommended Practice have been developed to establish uniform methods for impulse and high temperature circulation testing of hydraulic hose assemblies under special conditions not specified in SAE J343 for SAE J517 hoses. Basic test procedures shall be in accordance with SAE J343 except as modified in this document.

This SAE Recommended Practice identifies test procedures and parameters which may be used to evaluate, qualify and inspect non-SAE hydraulic hoses or other hose constructions which do not conform to any established ISO or national standards defining hydraulic hoses. (Non-SAE hydraulic hoses are defined as those which do not conform to the categories listed in SAE J517.) It is not intended for evaluating fluoropolymer lined hose constructions or hose constructions with working pressures above 86 MPa.

The following list consists of hose data provided as of December, 2019, and is for convenience in determining acceptability of nonmetallic flexible hose assemblies intended for usage under 46 CFR 56.60-25. Where the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) or type of fitting is not specified, use the manufacturer's recommended MAWP or type of fitting. This list has been compiled by SAE staff from information provided by the manufacturers whose product listings appear in this document. Manufacturers wishing to list their products in this document shall: a Successfully test their hose to the requirements of SAE J1942, Table 1. b Submit a letter of certification to the SAE J1942 test requirements for each specific type of hose tested (see sample table, Table 1) along with the test results.

SAE J1942, developed through the cooperative efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard and SAE, became effective August 28, 19911, as the official document for nonmetallic flexible hose assemblies for commercial marine use. This SAE Standard covers specific requirements for several styles of hose and/or hose assemblies in systems aboard commercial vessels inspected and certificated by the U.S. Coast Guard. It is intended that this document establish hose constructions and performance levels that are essential to safe operations in the marine environment. This recommended practice covers minimum requirements for air brake hose assemblies made from reinforced elastomeric hose and suitable fittings for use in automotive air brake systems including flexible connections from frame to axle, tractor to trailer, trailer to trailer and other unshielded air lines with air pressures up to 1 MPa, that are exposed to potential pull or impact. This SAE Information Report is intended to provide the hydraulic system analyst with a procedure which will assist in the selection and use of high-pressure wire reinforced hydraulic hose assemblies. This document relates damage done by pressure cycles with the pressure-life performance curve for the hose assembly being evaluated, using a linear damage rule to predict fatigue life similar to that used for predicting metal fatigue life. The accuracy of cumulative damage calculations is directly related to proper measurement of the service pressure history and pressure-life performance for the hose assembly being evaluated.

This SAE Information Report is intended to provide the hydraulic oil manufacturer and hydraulic equipment manufacturer with information that can be used predicting the relative impact that non petroleum based hydraulic oils may have on the hose elastomers in the existing system. This document contains the information necessary to perform the tests using standard elastomer formulations, representative of material used in hydraulic hose. The test methods used are defined within ASTM D471, standard test method for Rubber Property—Effect of Liquids. The physical properties measured, are volume swell, tensile strength, percent elongation, shore A hardness and load at 100% elongation. The properties were measured, after immersion, at 72 hours, 168 hours, 336 hours, 504 hours, 672 hours, 840 hours, and 1008 hours and the percent calculated as change from the unaged properties.
