Model Based Control for Premixed Charge Compression Ignition Diesel Engine

Premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion is effective in reducing harmful exhaust gas and improving the fuel consumption of diesel engines [1]. However, PCCI combustion has a problem of exhibiting lower combustion stability than diffusive combustion [2, 3], which makes it challenging to apply to mass production engines. Its low combustion stability problem can be overcome by implementing complicated injection control strategies that account for variations in environmental and engine operating conditions as well as transient engine conditions, such as turbocharging delay, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) delay, and intake air temperature delay. Although there is an example where the combustion mode is switched according to the intake O2 fraction [4], it requires a significant number of engineering-hours to calibrate multiple combustion modes. And besides, such switching combustion modes tends to have a risk of discontinuous combustion noise and torque.

Low Cooling Losses and Low Emission Analysis of Small Bore Diesel Engine Combustion

Small bore diesel engines often adopt a two-valve cylinder head and a non-central injector layout to expand the port flow passage area. This non-central injector layout causes asymmetrical gas flow and fuel distribution, resulting in worse heat losseses and a less homogenous fuel-air mixture than an equivalent four-valve cylinder head layout with a central injector. To improve these problems Toyota applied a new concept which was characterized by tapered shape design on the upper portion of the piston and low compression ratio to achieve more homogeneous gas flow and fuel-air mixture. This paper describes the impact of new combustion concept and the mechanism of the improvement by 3D-CFD analysis and optical measurement.

Small bore diesel engines often adopt a two-valve cylinder head and a non-central injector layout to expand the port flow passage area. This non-central injector layout causes asymmetrical gas flow and fuel distribution, resulting in worse heat losses and a less homogenous fuel-air mixture than an equivalent four-valve cylinder head layout with a central injector. This paper describes the improvement of piston bowl geometry to achieve a more homogeneous gas flow and fuel-air mixture. This concept reduced fuel consumption by 2.5% compared to the original piston bowl geometry, while also reducing NOx emissions by 10%.

A Study on Effect of Heterogeneity of Oxygen Concentration of Mixture in a Combustion Chamber on Combustion and Emissions of Diesel Engine

In this study, the combustion characteristics of diesel flame achieved in a rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM) at various patterns of oxygen distribution in the chamber are investigated in order to clarify the effect of heterogeneity of oxygen distribution in diesel engines induced by EGR on the soot and NOx emissions. To make the heterogeneous distribution of oxygen in a combustion chamber, the mixtures with different oxygen concentrations are injected through the each different port located on the cylinder wall. Results indicate that the amount of oxygen entrained into the spray upstream the luminous flame region affects the NO emission from diesel flame strongly.
