This document establishes engineering criteria and guidance for quality assurance requirements (including Test and Inspection) for procurement of threaded fasteners where such criteria and guidance is not otherwise provided by existing fastener standards or specifications. The document also provides requirements and test procedures for self-locking fasteners including those manufactured by the installing activity.

This document also provides requirements for the selection and use of fastener lubricants, additional corrosion protection treatments, fastener tightening procedures, and the use of thread-locking compounds.

This SAE Parts Standard provides dimensional and quality assurance requirements for 1/4 through 2 in sizes of studs in the following configurations in standard materials used for ship system applications: a. Continuous thread studs in UNRC and 8UNR series. b. Double end studs (clamping type) where both ends are of the same thread length (UNRC or 8UN). Also called bolt-studs. (These are suitable for mating with nuts or the set end may be installed with anaerobic thread locking compound.) c. Double end studs (interference thread type) with the nut end having UNRC or 8UNR series thread and where the tap end has NC 5 HFS interference fit thread forms. Also called a tap end stud. A complete metric companion to this document is provided in SAE J2271M, therefore no metric equivalents are presented. These studs are primarily or use in ship systems and equipment.

This SAE Standard provides a comprehensive list of requirements for the selection, identification, and control of metric and inch sized fasteners for use in shipboard applications for both shipbuilder installed joints and for use in shipboard components. The fastener selection requirements included the following: a. materials; b. thread selection; c. plating, coatings, surface treatments; d. locking devices and elements; e. screw thread fastener inserts; f. fastener part or identifying numbers; and g. identification markings. The purpose of this document is to assist the designer in selecting a fastener and in determining what fastener options should be specified for a particular application. This document is intended to provide uniform requirements for the shipboard use of threaded fasteners and their associated hardware. It is also intended to promote the use of standardized fasteners and to minimize the variety of fasteners used.
