Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems for Trailers under 26,000 lbs. GVWR

2023-10-26
WIP
J3309
This SAE recommended practice defines the system and component functions, measurement metrics, testing methodologies for evaluating the functionality and performance of tire pressure systems for use on trailers under 26,000lbs. GVWR within the known operating environments. This document is applicable to all towed trailers under 26,000lbs. GVWR. Examples of towed trailers are recreational vehicle travel trailers and fifth wheels, utility trailers, cargo trailers, livestock trailers, flatbed trailers, boat trailers, and snowmobile trailers. These trailers can be equipped with 1,2 or 3 axles with each axle supporting either 2 or 4 tires. These systems are recommended to address all tires in service as originally installed on a trailer by the OEM. This Recommended Practice can also be applied to external TPMS that also cover tow vehicles and trailers simultaneously. This document will focus on tire pressure systems of the monitoring type.

Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Attachment Performance Up to 13608/kg (30000/lb) Trailer Weight

2017-11-28
CURRENT
J2638_201711
This document establishes minimum performance criteria and definition of terms for the towing interface between a towing vehicle and fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer at or below 13608 kg (30000 pounds) gross trailer weight. This establishes criteria for the hitch, tow vehicle attachment structure, trailer attachment structure, and coupler.

Trailer Sway Response Test Procedure

2017-10-10
CURRENT
J2664_201710
This SAE Information Report establishes a consistent procedure for measuring and analyzing the natural sway response of a particular trailer when attached to a particular vehicle under specific loading and operating conditions. This test procedure applies, but is not limited to, passenger cars, vans, light/medium-duty trucks as tow vehicles, and semitrailers with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 11794 kg (26000 pounds) or less. Other applications include full trailers, tow dollies, tow bars, and the like. Other articulated vehicles can utilize this test procedure as long as the test does not exceed the linear behavior of the system. This test procedure does not apply to motorcycles towing trailers.

Trailer Couplings, Hitches, and Safety Chains—Automotive Type

2014-05-30
CURRENT
J684_201405
This SAE Standard includes couplings, hitches, and safety chains used in conjunction with all types of trailers or towed vehicles whose Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) does not exceed 4540 kg (10 000 lb). This includes such types as utility, boat, camping, travel, and special purpose trailers which are normally towed by conventional passenger cars, light-duty commercial vehicles, light trucks, and multipurpose passenger vehicles. This document is intended primarily for ball-and-socket type of couplings and hitches. It should not be construed as a limitation to this type alone but should apply where appropriate to ring-and-pintle, clevis-and-pin, or any other draft means designed to serve this purpose.
