Many big automotive manufacturers use different technologies in their transmission system but they still use the same basic principle in their transmission systems. This new technology which is brought by Koenigsegg has changed the way people think about transmission system. This new transmission system is known as Koenigsegg Direct Drive and is currently used by one automotive manufacturer and in one vehicle only, but it soon might change the way it is now.

Employing natural plant based fiber in interior automotive parts for cost & weight benefit

The Automotive industry is in ever more need for a lesser weight car due to progressively stringent emission norms and the demand of customer to have better mileage. It can be a gargantuan challenge for automotive manufacturers to search for lesser weight material to meet both customers as well as regulatory norms. But in some cases such lower weight material can increase the cost and adding a expensive material which increases overall cost to a price sensitive market like India is not favorable. One such solution is using the indigenous plant fiber (Jute) in combination with propylene (PP) to make Interior plastics components. Jute a vegetable fiber also referred to as "the golden fiber" has high tensile strength, low extensibility and is well established in fabric, packing, agriculture, construction industries. The biodegradable Jute lesser weight & abundance (India is the leading manufacturer of the Jute) can be utilized in making automobile trim parts in India.

Automotive returnable cases (Stacktainers) are being used to transport the automotive parts through surface & seaways. No automotive manufacturer wants to spend money on woods, paper & cardboard again and again, it`s better to pay once for robust & reusable cases. these provide better protection to parts from its manufacturing to assembly line of vehicle. While transporting, any kind of crack or failure of returnable cases may lead to loss of money, human & time. To ensure the safety, these pallets have to be validated for vibrations coming from surface irregularities, sea waves & load due to stacking of cases one above other. The objective of this study is to establish a correlation in between the physical testing & simulation in Computer added Engineering (CAE) of automotive returnable case (Stacktainers). There are different types of tests considered to validate the returnable case, rough road evaluation, Multi-axial Vibration & strength evaluation.

This paper investigates and proposes the possibilities of standardizing the software/firmware package format and flash jobs in order to provide the possibility of productizing the update-over-the-air solution regarding on-board vehicle components and make use of it in all OEMs with minimum configuration changes and customization. The update-over-the-air solution in the automotive sector is provided by various suppliers and needs to be customized to meet various OEMs requirements. Analysis Of GaN Based BLDC Motor Drive For Automotive Application

Objective Automotive sector is rapidly moving towards electric vehicle. BLDC motor is gaining popularity in the field of electric vehicle due to its high torque to weight ratio and simple control. In this paper we will focus on Switching loss characterization of 3 kW GaN based BLDC drive for electric vehicle. To improve efficiency of drive gallium-nitride based power transistor is used instead of Si MOSFET. GaN devices enable the design of inverter at higher frequencies with improved power density and efficiency as compared to traditional Si MOSFETs. Methodology In this paper commercially available GaN devices compared with Si MOSFETs. The power devices, which are selected for the performance comparison, are EPC2022 GaN by EPC, GS61008P GaN by Gan System and SiDR668DP Si MOSFET by Vishay. The Switching losses analytically predicted in MATHCAD tool and then compared with SPICE simulation losses. Double pulse test circuit is used to find out power losses of power transistors.

Development of Idling Stop System for 125 cm3 Scooters with Fuel Injection

The idling stop system for scooters employs an ACG-starter connected directly to the crankshaft without reduction gears; therefore, it is possible to start the engine silently. The system is designed to stop the engine automatically when the scooter stops, and the engine restarts simply by opening the throttle. Scooters with 50 cm3 engines have already been employing the idling stop system. This system for 125 cm3 engines was developed to enlarge the application range of the idling stop system. It needs a large ACG starter because the cranking torque is higher than that of 50 cm3 engines, so the cranking torque was reduced by using a decompression device. The ACG starter was designed with a thin and large diameter construction in order to minimize the increase in engine width. The new idling stop system was developed with an integrated control of the fuel injection system and the ACG starter.

In the fourth-generation model of the 2018 PCX, the basic structure of frame was reviewed to make it lighter and rigid. Weight reduction was also adapted to its wheels. These enhancements contributed to its increased dynamic performances. The engine performances were enhanced as well, and all these features made it possible to provide a high-quality riding with composure of rider’s mind. In addition, we developed hybrid model PCX HYBRID that uses an ACG starter directly connected to a crankshaft as a drive assist system and realized pleasurable ride feeling with a more direct drive response.

This project goal was to come up with own thumb design. The Backhoe thumb attachment was previously a Proprietary Design of the supplier which had two major limitations, limited opportunity of design improvements for resolving customer issues and higher total cost. The paper covers details about overcoming these limitations. In Backhoe loaders, for multiple variants of machines, four different thumbs are used. Small and mid-backhoe machine classes use 4-tine and 2-tine thumb depending upon customer applications. The design team targeted an external customer requirement of a more compact design and internal requirement of accelerating design improvement cycle time.

Fault Detection in Single Stage Helical Planetary Gearbox using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with Histogram Features

Abstract Drive train failures are most common in wind turbines. Lots of effort has been made to improve the reliability of the gearbox but the truth is that these efforts do not provide a life time solution. Majority of failures are caused by bearing and gearbox. It also states that wind turbine gearbox failure causes the highest downtime as repair has to be done at Original Equipment Manufacturer [OEM]. This work aims to predict the failures in planetary gearbox using fault diagnosis technique and machine learning algorithms. In the proposed method the failing parts of planetary gearbox are monitored with the help of accelerometer sensor mounted on the planetary gearbox casing which will record the vibrations. A prototype has been fabricated as a miniature of single stage planetary gearbox. The vibrations of healthy gearbox, sun defect, planet defect and ring defect under loaded conditions are obtained. The signals show the performance characteristics of gearbox condition.

Single point Incremental shaping (SPIF) is a metal forming process which rose to unmistakable quality toward the start of the 1990s. ISF is an exceedingly limited twisting procedure in which a device, modified to take after a specific direction, moves over a sheet metal and structures the coveted shape. During the SPIF, process parameters such as the Axial Feed (mm), Feed (mm/min), tool Diameter (mm) and Depth (mm) at the specimen interface greatly influence in the Cone shaped Mechanical quality such as Maximum Thinning (mm), Cone Height (mm), Wall Angle (mm) & Forming Time (min) of Forming. The aim of the present work is to study these parameters while build up a cone quality, were formed by VMC. To carry out a detailed study of these parameters, experiments were conducted by using the L9 orthogonal array. The output parameters such as affecting mechanical quality were analysed by COPRAS (Complex Proportional Assessment of alternatives) technique and ANNOVA.

With air traffic demand constantly increasing and several years of aircraft production in their backlog, major aircraft manufacturers are now shifting their focus toward improving assembly process efficiency. One of the most promising solutions, known as “One Side Assembly”, aims to perform the whole assembly sequence from one side of the structure (drilling, temporary fastener installation and removal, blind fastener installation, assembly control) and with a high level of integrated automation. Investments in robotic equipment, automation engineering and innovation are very active and automation capabilities have already increased a lot in the aerospace industry. As an example, drilling operations for large dimensions airframe are clearly moving from manual to automated. However, despite more and more clever and sophisticated robotics, the use of historical fasteners with two side installation method remains a strong limitation to innovative automated assembly sequences.

The Improvement Brake`s Qualities of the Car by Developing the Method of the Choosing Frictional Pairs of the Brakes Mechanisms

The cause of a large number of traffic accidents is an instability of frictional pairs characteristic of the braking system. The car went from the factory`s conveyor has a brake pads which were quality selected. The owner buys a brake pads of various firms in the process of exploitation. It is not pass by it`s characteristic of the thermal stability to frictional pairs of the back axle. It was identified a significant deviation of braking force allocation between axles in the process of traffic and stand experiments with the car with different combination of frictional pairs characteristic which were setting on the front and back of the brake`s system. The reduction of the braking force`s distribution`s coefficient on the front axle that were identified with experiments can become a cause of braking wear. It is necessity for cars and road trains to ensure not only high marks of the brake characteristics but uniform distribution braking force on the axles.

Large Eddy Simulations and Tracer-LIF Diagnostics of Wall Film Dynamics in an Optically Accessible GDI Research Engine

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and tracer-based Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) measurements have been performed to study the dynamics of fuel wall-films on the piston top of an optically accessible, four-valve pent-roof GDI research engine for a total of eight operating conditions. Starting from a reference point, the systematic variations include changes in engine speed (600; 1,200 and 2,000 RPM) and load (WOT and 500 mbar intake pressure); concerning the fuel path the Start Of Injection (SOI=360°, 390° and 420° CA after gas exchange TDC) as well as the injection pressure (10, 20 and 35 MPa) have been varied. For each condition, 40 experimental images were acquired phase-locked at 10° CA intervals after SOI, providing valuable insights with respect to the wall film dynamics in terms of spatial extent, thickness and temperature.

Icing is a major safety issue for flight operations in the civil, defense and space sectors. Ice can form on critical components during takeoff/landing, or while in service, depending on prevailing weather conditions. Aircraft manufacturers relies on two different approaches to prevent ice buildup using an active anti-icing system to melt ice buildup or deicing chemicals/ice repellent surface to minimize the buildup ice. The use of active anti-icing systems offers good protection, however can add significant penalty to overall weight, energy consumption and cost. Aerospace industry is in need for an advanced ice repellent surface to effectively minimize ice buildup on critical components with no modification to existing design can provide significant relief to ice prone systems.

A Study of Droplet Breakup in the Vicinity of an Airfoil

Supercooled large droplets can breakup before imping on aerodynamic surfaces and this should be taken into account in the icing codes. A study of droplets breakup in the vicinity of an airfoil has been conducted. Experiments for streams of droplets that were allowed to fall in the path of an incoming airfoil attached to a rotatory arm were conducted at the INTA facility. Droplets diameters ranged from 500 μm to 3 mm and two airfoils models of leading edge radius of 70 mm and 103 mm moving at velocities of 70 m/s, 80 m/s and 90 m/s were tested. Two subsets of experimental data for both bag and stamen breakup and shear breakup modes were used in this investigation. For these cases a numerical trajectory and deformation model was applied to obtain the evolution of the horizontal position, and the droplet maximum and minimum diameter. Breakup onset was determined from experimental data.

Extension of a 2D Algorithm for Catch Efficiency Calculation to Three Dimensions

Accurate calculation of the catch efficiency β is of paramount importance for any ice accretion calculation since β is the most important factor in determining the mass of ice accretion. A new scheme has been proposed recently in [1] for accurately calculating β on a discretized two-dimensional geometry based on the results of a Lagrangian droplet trajectory integrator (start and impact conditions). This paper proposes an extension to the algorithm in Ref. [1], which is applicable to three-dimensional surfaces with arbitrary surface discretization. The 3D algorithm maintains the positive attributes of the original 2D algorithm, namely mass conservation of the impinging water, capability to deal with overlapping impingement regions and with crossing trajectories, computational efficiency of the algorithm, and low number of trajectories required to reach good accuracy in catch efficiency.

Separating-Reattaching Flows Over an Iced Airfoil

Delayed Detached Eddy Simulations (DDES) of separating-reattaching flows on the suction side of an ice-contaminated airfoil were conducted. A single-section straight-wing NACA23012 airfoil with leading-edge ice was studied. The geometry represents a realistic glaze horn-ice contamination obtained during the icing test campaigns described in [1], which has aerodynamic data for comparison. The three-dimensional transient flow behavior was simulated using the open-source flow solver OVERFLOW, version 2.2l [2] developed by NASA Langley Research Center. Configurations at three angles of attack that exhibit unsteady flow behavior starting with the bursting angle were examined at Mach number of 0.18 and Reynolds number of 1.8x106. As the stall angle was approached the aerodynamic performance parameters displayed large-scale unsteadiness where periods of attached and separated flows were observed. The time-averaged results show good agreement with the aerodynamic test data.

Simulations of Thin Film Dynamics on a Flat Plate and an Airfoil

The goal of the present study is to investigate the dynamics of a thin water film on a flat plate and an airfoil using direct numerical simulation (DNS). The first case for a wetted flat plate is used to model former experiments and investigate the dynamics of a wind-driven water film. The second case for a thin film on a NACA 0012 airfoil of chord length 0.5 m is used to investigate the dynamics of a wind-driven water film on a curved surface. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between the liquid film and the air shear-layer above the film. As the incoming airflow moves over the thin water film, instability is triggered at the gas-liquid interface. Interfacial waves develop and are advected downstream. The interaction between the air flow and the interfacial waves induces shedding vortices near the interface, which in turn perturb the liquid film farther downstream. Simulations are performed using the open source multiphase flow solvers, Gerris and Basilisk.
