Unsettled Topics Concerning the Field Testing of Automated Driving Systems

2019-12-20
EPR2019009
Automated driving systems (ADS) have the potential to revolutionize transportation. Through the automation of driver functions in the application of advanced technology within the vehicle, significant improvements can be made to safety, efficiency, the user experience and the preservation of the environment. According to The Us Department of Transportation [1], there are more than 1,400 cars, trucks, buses and other vehicles being tested by more than 80 companies across the USA. Implementation of ADS technology is well advanced, with many sites across the us incorporating automated vehicles (AVs) into wider programs to apply advanced technology to transportation. Discussions with public sector implementing agencies suggests that one of the barriers to faster progress lies in the lack of consistent and standardized field-testing protocols.

Unsettled Technology Domains in Aerospace Additive Manufacturing Concerning Safety, Airworthiness, and Certification

2019-12-20
EPR2019008
Additive manufacturing (AM) is currently being used to produce many certified aerospace components. However, significant advantages of AM are not exploited due to unresolved issues associated with process control, feedstock materials, surface finish, inspection, and cost. Components subject to fatigue must undergo surface finish improvements to enable inspection. This adds cost and limits the use of topology optimization. Continued development of process models is also required to enable optimization and understand the potential for defects in thin walled and slender sections. Costs are high for powder-fed processes due to material costs, machine costs, and low deposition rates. Cost for wire-fed processes are high due to the extensive post-process machining required. In addition, these processes are limited to low-complexity features.

Unsettled Impacts of Integrating Automated Electric Vehicles into a Mobility-as-a-Service Ecosystem and Effects on Traditional Transportation and Ownership

2019-11-25
EPR2019004
The current business model of the automotive industry is based on individual car ownership, yet new ride sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft are well capitalized to invest in large, commercially operated, on-demand mobility service vehicle fleets. Car manufacturers like Tesla want to incorporate personal car owners into part time fleet operation by utilizing their commercial fleet service. These robotaxi-fleets can be operated profitably when the technology works in a reliable manner and regulators allow driverless operation. Although Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) models of private and commercial vehicles fleets can complement public transportation models, they may contribute to lower public transportation ridership and thus higher subsidies per ride. This can lead to inefficiencies in the utilization of existing public transportation infrastructure.

2019-28-2579
“NuGen Mobility Summit-2019” Paper Title : Determining the State Of Health [SOH] of Li Ion cell Authors: Sushant Mutagekar, Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Prabhjot Kaur Objective Cells age with life. This aging is dependant on various factors like charging/discharging rates, DOD of operation and operating temperature. As the cell ages it undergoes power fade (ability to deliver required power at particular State of Charge [SOC]) and capacity fade (the charge storage capacity of cell). In an Electric Vehicle it is important to know what power shall be demanded from a battery irrespective of what its current SOC is and number of cycles it has undergone. With minimal accuracy and less computational power, it is difficult for a Battery Management System [BMS] to accurately determine SOH; the paper proposes a a precise model that may help.

2019-28-2420
The study aims to evaluate the lateral stability of tractor-front end loader system in consideration with difficult work conditions based on various loader bucket lifting heights from ground while driving a system on transversal slopes. In the proposed method the centre of gravity of tractor-front end loader system was calculated and analysed to evaluate the transversal overturning of the system. This overturning of the system was analysed by applying mathematical equations presented in past studies and compared with the newly developed prediction model for 3 test tractors of 25 HP. The excel spreadsheet comprised of mathematical equations used to calculate the Tractor Stability Index (TSI) on transverse slope with respect to loader bucket height and payload in dynamic condition. A criterion has been defined to categorize the Tractor Stability Index (TSI) poor to excellent on a scale of 0 to 4 where <0 being the very poor, 0-2 Poor, 2-4 Good and >4 being the excellent.

Development of Idling Stop System for 125 cm3 Scooters with Fuel Injection

2019-11-21
2019-28-2449
The idling stop system for scooters employs an ACG-starter connected directly to the crankshaft without reduction gears; therefore, it is possible to start the engine silently. The system is designed to stop the engine automatically when the scooter stops, and the engine restarts simply by opening the throttle. Scooters with 50 cm3 engines have already been employing the idling stop system. This system for 125 cm3 engines was developed to enlarge the application range of the idling stop system. It needs a large ACG starter because the cranking torque is higher than that of 50 cm3 engines, so the cranking torque was reduced by using a decompression device. The ACG starter was designed with a thin and large diameter construction in order to minimize the increase in engine width. The new idling stop system was developed with an integrated control of the fuel injection system and the ACG starter.

HANDLING EXCEPTIONAL SITUATION OF AN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE

2019-11-21
2019-28-2526
In autonomous vehicle world human safety takes highest priority. And most researchers agree that machines won't be able to completely take over driving duties for years or even decades. "Today's autonomous vehicles can drive relatively well in typical settings, but they fail in exceptional situations - and it's those situations that are the most dangerous," said Walter Lasecki, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering. "Designing autonomous systems that can handle those exceptional situations could take decades, and in the meantime, we're going to need something to fill the gap. Few companies have introduced human safety drivers in autonomous vehicles which has cost advantage compared to traditional ride sharing services. Combining human and artificial intelligence in autonomous vehicles could push driverless cars more quickly toward wide - scale adoption.

Squeak and Rattle (S&R) are the dominant undesired noises which adjudge the perceived quality of a vehicle. It's a foremost problem which needs to be identified and eliminated at a design stage to develop a robust vehicle, which also aids in pacifying the physical testing and warranty claim costs. A Finite Element model of the complex plastic dashboard has been analyzed to identify risks and the root cause of S&R problem under dynamic and static loading conditions, using E-line methodology. These complex transient problems are highly influenced by various parameters like gap variability, temperature, the coefficient of thermal expansion, thickness, and material properties. This paper elaborates the detailed investigation conducted using stochastic simulations to evaluate the individual and combined impact of each parameter on S&R performance

2019-28-2403
Child safety lock override mechanism - For Woman Safety Woman safety is a major concern in present world and the related laws ensure that government also cares for it. Mostly in public taxies, there is possibility for the driver to harass women occupant by activating the child safety lock without her knowledge. Purpose of child safety lock is to prevent child in the rear seat from opening the door and fall from vehicle. This will cause severe injury to the child. When child lock is ON, Inside Door handle becomes inoperative and the child cannot open the door. Only way to open door is through outside handle. But there is possibility for Taxi driver to kidnap the woman customer by enabling child safety lock, so that inside handle becomes inoperative and make her get trapped in car. To prevent such cases in future, Ministry of Road Transport ordered the manufacturers to delete child safety lock for all commercial vehicles.

Aerodynamic analysis of commercial vehicle using active vortex generators concept

2019-11-21
2019-28-2409
Any physical body being propelled through the air has drag associated with it. Drag will be created on the surface of the vehicle due to the flow separation at the rear end. In aerodynamics the flow separation can often result in increased drag particularly pressure drag, to delay the flow separation, the vortex generators are used on the roof end of the vehicle just before the point of flow separation. The objective of this project is to perform aerodynamic analysis of commercial vehicle using active vortex generators concept. First, the aerodynamic analysis of a baseline commercial vehicle model is performed and same is validated with the scaled model by using a wind tunnel test. Further analysis has been done by using active vortex generators concept with variation of angle of attacks for vehicle speed of 50, 70, 90 kmph. Also, analysis has been carried out for six different yaw angles. The simulation is carried out with the use of ANSYS Fluent.

Optimization of the critical parameters affecting the fuel lid performance

2019-11-21
2019-28-2413
Fuel lid is one of the parts which are mostly operated mechanically by the end user while filling the fuel. Therefore part design should be done in such a manner that it can be operated smoothly without any hassles. The conventional steel fuel filler doors are of two types: Three-piece type fuel filler doors also known as the dog-leg type and two-piece type fuel filler doors also known as the butterfly type. Both types of fuel filler doors have a pin that acts as a rotational hinge axis about which the fuel filler door opens and closes. Depending on the styling and shape of the side body outer, fuel lid type is decided. In the current study, dog-leg type fuel lid is considered. The factors that primarily affect the opening-closing performance are the weight of fuel lid, hinge axis, and the friction at the hinge area. The orientation of the hinge axis is derived from the profile of the side body outer panel. The fuel lid weight and hinge axis are decided in the initial design stage.

Authors: Aditi Sethi1, Siddhanta Shrivastava2, Madhusudan Joshi3 Organization: 1,2,3 International Centre for Automotive Technology, Manesar Introduction: With the increasing utilization of electronics in Indian automobile industry, there is an essential requirement for standardizing the functional safety of sub-systems that constitute advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) as it would be the foundation stone for the automated vehicles in future. These systems assist the driver and the driving process, further increasing the car safety and road safety, subsequently reducing human error. Due to interaction of several electronic control units (ECUs) in a vehicle and complexity of the system, electronic stability plays a vital role. Therefore, the standards shall be more performance oriented and technology neutral. They shall also cover validation tests associated with safety, mechanical rigidity, durability, environmental protection and electromagnetic compatibility.

A Self-Intelligent Traffic Light Control System based on Traffic Environment using Machine Learning

2019-11-21
2019-28-2459
In this paper, we will detect and track vehicles on a video stream and count those going through a defined line and to ultimately give an idea of what the real-time on street situation is across the road network. Our major objective is to optimize the delay in transit of vehicles in odd hours of the day. It uses YOLO object detection technique to detect objects on each of the video frames And SORT (Simple Online and Realtime Tracking algorithm) to track those objects over different frames. Once the objects are detected and tracked over different frames a simple mathematical calculation is applied to count the intersections between the vehicles previous and current frame positions with a defined line. At present, the traffic control systems in India, lack intelligence and act as an open-loop control system, with no feedback or sensing network. Present technologies use Inductive loops and sensors to detect the number of vehicles passing by.
