2019-28-2559
The Automotive industry is in ever more need for a lesser weight car due to progressively stringent emission norms and the demand of customer to have better mileage. It can be a gargantuan challenge for automotive manufacturers to search for lesser weight material to meet both customers as well as regulatory norms. But in some cases such lower weight material can increase the cost and adding a expensive material which increases overall cost to a price sensitive market like India is not favorable. One such solution is using the indigenous plant fiber (Jute) in combination with propylene (PP) to make Interior plastics components. Jute a vegetable fiber also referred to as "the golden fiber" has high tensile strength, low extensibility and is well established in fabric, packing, agriculture, construction industries. The biodegradable Jute lesser weight & abundance (India is the leading manufacturer of the Jute) can be utilized in making automobile trim parts in India.

2019-28-2569
Automotive returnable cases (Stacktainers) are being used to transport the automotive parts through surface & seaways. No automotive manufacturer wants to spend money on woods, paper & cardboard again and again, it`s better to pay once for robust & reusable cases. these provide better protection to parts from its manufacturing to assembly line of vehicle. While transporting, any kind of crack or failure of returnable cases may lead to loss of money, human & time. To ensure the safety, these pallets have to be validated for vibrations coming from surface irregularities, sea waves & load due to stacking of cases one above other. The objective of this study is to establish a correlation in between the physical testing & simulation in Computer added Engineering (CAE) of automotive returnable case (Stacktainers). There are different types of tests considered to validate the returnable case, rough road evaluation, Multi-axial Vibration & strength evaluation.

2019-11-21
2019-28-2576
Objective: In ground vehicle industry, strain life approach is commonly used for predicting fatigue life. This approach requires use of fatigue material properties such as fatigue strength coefficient (σf'), fatigue strength exponent (b), fatigue ductility coefficient (εf'), fatigue ductility exponent (c), cyclic strength coefficient (K′) and cyclic strain hardening exponent (n′). These properties are obtained from stable hysteresis loop of constant amplitude strain-controlled uniaxial fatigue tests. Usually fatigue material properties represent 50th percentile experimental data and doesn't account possible material variation in the fatigue life calculation. However, for robust design of vehicle components, variation in material properties need to be taken into account. In this paper, methodology to develop 5th percentile (B5), 10th percentile (B10) and 20th percentile (B20) fatigue material properties are discussed.

2019-28-2450
Objective: The Objective of the research is to detect drop in level of pressure in the wheel with respect to nominal pressure using data obtained from speed sensors. The research discusses the standard procedure of experimentation to obtain data which eventually used to produce results. This procedure is taken from principles Design of Experiments. Statistical tools are used to analyze and give determining factors for pressure variation. Methodology: To study idea, we made use of two-wheeler platform and collected data of wheel speed sensors on both wheels. The idea is when there is any change in tire pressure the radius of the wheel also changes and usually this relation is direct. Hence, change in tire pressure changes the angular velocity of the wheel. In this approach wheel speed sensors are used to measure the angular speed for standard and reduced pressure conditions.

2019-01-2607
We present an approach to estimate a single lane line using a LiDAR unit for autonomous vehicles. By comparing the difference in elevation of LiDAR channels, a drivable region is defined. Further, by filtering and sorting intensity values, we are able to distinguish potential lane markings. By calculating the standard deviation of the lane markings in the y-axis the data can be further refined to specific points of interest. By applying a statistical approximation, to these points of interest, we can interpolate a linear approximation of the lane line.

2019-28-0151
Abstract Drive train failures are most common in wind turbines. Lots of effort has been made to improve the reliability of the gearbox but the truth is that these efforts do not provide a life time solution. Majority of failures are caused by bearing and gearbox. It also states that wind turbine gearbox failure causes the highest downtime as repair has to be done at Original Equipment Manufacturer [OEM]. This work aims to predict the failures in planetary gearbox using fault diagnosis technique and machine learning algorithms. In the proposed method the failing parts of planetary gearbox are monitored with the help of accelerometer sensor mounted on the planetary gearbox casing which will record the vibrations. A prototype has been fabricated as a miniature of single stage planetary gearbox. The vibrations of healthy gearbox, sun defect, planet defect and ring defect under loaded conditions are obtained. The signals show the performance characteristics of gearbox condition.

2019-09-16
2019-01-1887
ASRP (Assembly Simulation of Riveting Process) software is a special tool for modelling assembly process for large scale airframe parts. On the base of variation simulation, ASRP provides a convenient way to analyze, verify and optimize the arrangement of temporary fasteners. During the airframe assembly process certain criteria on the residual gap between parts must be fulfilled. The numerical approach realized in ASRP allows one to evaluate the quality of contact on every stage of the assembly process and solve verification and optimization problems for temporary fastener patterns. The paper is devoted to description of several specialized approaches that combine statistical analysis of measured data and numerical simulation using high-performance computing for optimization of fastener patterns, calculation of forces in fasteners needed to close initial gaps and identification of hazardous areas in junction regions.

Universal Synaptics - Aging Electronics, Intermittence, & No Fault Found

2019-09-16
2019-01-1889
Intermittence occurs randomly in time, place, amplitude and duration. The very nature of the failure mode suggests that the ability to detect and further isolate the intermittence root cause is based on detection SENSITIVITY and PROBABILITY rather than conventional methods concentrating on ohmic measurement accuracy. Simply put, you can’t detect an intermittent event until it occurs, and then you might have limited opportunities to catch it on the specific circuit when it does. Trying to measure fractions of a milliohm, scanning one circuit at a time, is ineffective for this particular failure mode. In this paper we will outline the problem of intermittence and its testing difficulties. More importantly, we will describe the unique equipment and process which has produced overwhelming success in Intermittence / NFF resolution and MTBF extension.

New Technologies for Airframe Structural Assemblies

2019-09-16
2019-01-1915
With air traffic demand constantly increasing and several years of aircraft production in their backlog, major aircraft manufacturers are now shifting their focus toward improving assembly process efficiency. One of the most promising solutions, known as “One Side Assembly”, aims to perform the whole assembly sequence from one side of the structure (drilling, temporary fastener installation and removal, blind fastener installation, assembly control) and with a high level of integrated automation. Investments in robotic equipment, automation engineering and innovation are very active and automation capabilities have already increased a lot in the aerospace industry. As an example, drilling operations for large dimensions airframe are clearly moving from manual to automated. However, despite more and more clever and sophisticated robotics, the use of historical fasteners with two side installation method remains a strong limitation to innovative automated assembly sequences.

The Improvement Brake`s Qualities of the Car by Developing the Method of the Choosing Frictional Pairs of the Brakes Mechanisms

2019-09-15
2019-01-2145
The cause of a large number of traffic accidents is an instability of frictional pairs characteristic of the braking system. The car went from the factory`s conveyor has a brake pads which were quality selected. The owner buys a brake pads of various firms in the process of exploitation. It is not pass by it`s characteristic of the thermal stability to frictional pairs of the back axle. It was identified a significant deviation of braking force allocation between axles in the process of traffic and stand experiments with the car with different combination of frictional pairs characteristic which were setting on the front and back of the brake`s system. The reduction of the braking force`s distribution`s coefficient on the front axle that were identified with experiments can become a cause of braking wear. It is necessity for cars and road trains to ensure not only high marks of the brake characteristics but uniform distribution braking force on the axles.

Emission Factors Evaluation in the RDE Context by a Multivariate Statistical Approach

2019-09-09
2019-24-0152
The Real Driving Emission (RDE) procedure will measure the pollutants, such as NOx, emitted by cars while driven on the road. RDE will not replace laboratory tests, such as the current WLTP but it will be added to them. RDE is complementary to the laboratory-based procedure to check the pollutant emissions level of a light-duty vehicle in real driving conditions. This means that the car will be driven on a real road according to random acceleration and deceleration patterns conditioned by traffic flow. So, the procedure will ensure that cars deliver real emissions over on-road and so the currently observed differences between emissions measured in the laboratory and those measured on road under real-world conditions, will be reduced. However, the identification of a path on the road to check the test conditions of RDE is not easy and hardly repeatable.
