Development of a Dual Motor Beam eAxle for Medium Duty Commercial Vehicle Application

Considering the current trend towards the electrification of commercial vehicles, the development of Beam eAxle solutions has become necessary. The utilization of an electric drive unit in heavy-duty solid axle-based commercial vehicles presents unique and demanding challenges. These include the necessity for elevated peak and continuous torque while meeting packaging constraints, structural integrity requirements, and extended service life. One such solution was developed by BorgWarner to address these challenges. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of the design and development process undertaken for this Dual Motor Beam eAxle system. This includes the initial comparison of various eAxle solutions, the specifications of components selected for this design, and the initial results from dyno and vehicle development.

Investigation of Real-World Crash Using an Accident Reconstruction Methodology Employing Crash Test Data

Automotive crash data analysis and reconstruction is vital for ensuring automotive safety. The objective of vehicle crash reconstruction is to determine the vehicle's motion before, during, and after the crash, as well as the impact on occupants in terms of injuries. Simulation approaches, such as PC CrashTM, have been developed to understand pre-crash and post-crash vehicle motion, rather than the crash phase behavior. Over the past few decades, crash phase simulations have utilized vehicle finite element models. While multibody simulation tools are suitable for crash simulations, they often require detailed crash test data to accurately capture vehicle behavior, which is not always readily available. This paper proposes a solution to this limitation by incorporating crash test data from databases, such as NHTSA, Global NCAP, consumer rating reports, and videos, along with a multibody-based approach, to conduct crash phase simulations.

IMU Based Velocity Estimation Impact on Stopping Distance for Heavy-Duty Class 8 Truck Air Brake Systems with ABS

An accurate estimate of vehicle speed is essential for optimal anti-lock braking system (ABS) calculations. Currently, most vehicles including heavy-duty class 8 trucks mainly rely on wheel speed sensors (WSS) to estimate velocity. However, as soon as braking is applied, WSS become inaccurate for determining the velocity due to the longitudinal slip developed in the tires. Using the inertial measurement unit (IMU) to estimate vehicle speed allows for its use in conjunction with the WSS to accurately calculate the slip ratio at each tire. These slip ratio values can then be used as the main control variable in the ABS algorithm to utilize the grip available more fully at each tire, to improve stopping distance and controllability. A steady state braking analysis model is developed and validated against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 121 60-0 mph stopping distance data for a loaded class 8 tractor semi-trailer combination.

Impact of Mixture Inhomogeneity and Ignition Location on Early Flame Kernel Evolution in a Direct-Injection Hydrogen-Fueled Heavy-Duty Optical Engine

An optically accessible hydrogen-fueled, heavy-duty engine was used to investigate the impact of mixture formation on the early flame kernel propagation and the resulting combustion cyclic variability. Direct injection from a centrally mounted medium-pressure outward-opening hollow-cone injector created a fuel- air mixture with a global equivalence ratio of 0.33. The engine was operated at 1200 RPM with dry air at an intake pressure and temperature of 1.0 bar and 305 K, respectively. The charge was ignited at three different locations using focused-laser ignition to allow for undisturbed flame evolution, and the fuel injection timing and injection pressure were varied to influence the mixture inhomogeneity.

In any case, the fundamental objective of this paper is to feature a comprehensive methodology known as Intrusion Detection System (IDS), which has been a significant device in getting network data in systems over many years. To the best of our insight, there is no recorded writing on a through outline of IDS execution explicitly in the CAN transport network system.

An Evaluation of the Performance of the WABCO OnGuardACTIVE Collision Mitigation System in a 2019 Freightliner M2 106

Testing was conducted in daytime and nighttime conditions at four speeds – 35, 50, 55, and 60 miles per hour (mph) – to evaluate the performance of the audible and visual forward collision warning (FCW) system in a WABCO OnGuardACTIVE collision mitigation system (CMS) while approaching a foam stationary vehicle target (SVT). Testing measured the time to collision (TTC) values utilizing a VBOX data acquisition system as well as an “analog” system utilizing synced cameras and a reference line painted on the test track. WABCO Toolbox was utilized to download OnGuard data from the Freightliner after each test; this data was then compared to the data acquired by the VBOX data acquisition system. The results of the testing provide valuable information to collision investigators on the performance of the WABCO OnGuardACTIVE Collision Mitigation System on stationary vehicles.

Examination of Detroit AssuranceⓇ 4.0 Video Radar Decision Unit (VRDU) Records for Use in Crash Analysis

The Daimler Detroit AssuranceⓇ 4.0 collision mitigation system is able to assist a driver in various aspects of safely operating their vehicle. One capability is the Active Brake Assist (ABA), which uses the Video Radar Decision Unit (VRDU) to communicate with the front bumper-mounted radar to provide information about potential hazards to the driver. The VRDU may warn the driver of potential hazards and apply partial or full braking, depending on the data being gathered and analyzed. The VRDU also records event data when an ABA event occurs. This data may be extracted from the VRDU using Detroit DiagnosticLink software. This paper presents an overview of the VRDU functionality and examines aspects of VRDU data such as the range and resolution of data elements, the synchronicity or timing of the recorded data, and application of the data for use in the analysis of crashes.

There has been a radical shift in the way individuals commute. The growing interest in the comfort and luxury of private vehicles has resulted in severe traffic congestion, a major concern worldwide. India, a highly populous country, requires public transportation that can attract and provide seamless, affordable, fast, and secure commutes to its citizens while remaining sustainable and environmentally friendly. An analysis of the Indian Railway shows the need and demand for a high-speed transport system. High-speed rails have always garnered attention for their speed, technology, and communication capabilities. Hyperloop technology is one such endeavor that has piqued the world's interest. Hyperloop is a futuristic mode of transportation currently under development. It has a floating pod that races along inside giant low-pressure tubes, either above or below ground. The testing pod is capable of covering 400 m in 15 s under a preliminary experiment.

Unsettled Topics Concerning Flying Cars for Urban Air Mobility

Flying cars—as a new type of vehicle for urban air mobility (UAM)—have become an important development trend for the transborder integration of automotive and aeronautical technologies and industries. This article introduces the 100-year history of flying cars, examines the current research status for UAM air buses and air taxis, and discusses the future development trend of intelligent transportation and air-to-land amphibious vehicles. Unsettled Topics Concerning Flying Cars for Urban Air Mobility identifies the major bottlenecks and impediments confronting the development of flying cars, such as high power density electric propulsion, high lift-to-drag ratio and lightweight body structures, and low-altitude intelligent flight. Furthermore, it proposes three phased goals and visions for the development of flying cars in China, suggesting the development of a flying vehicle technology innovation system that integrates automotive and aeronautic industries.

Commercial Viability Assessment and Planning of Safety-Critical Embedded SW of Electrified Road Vehicles

Recent extraordinary technological progress in the field of high-voltage-batteries has led an evolution in the automotive industry, resulting in vehicle manufacturers to shift from conventional powertrains towards electric ones. However, electrified road vehicles are amazingly complex. Today, the number of operations for a modern electric vehicle grew from millions to billions per second. This is mainly fueled by the electrification and safety requirements in addition to critical core functionalities. This emphasizes the importance of software development cost, effort, and production planning in the automotive industry. In this paper, in the framework of EU funded H2020 OBELICS project, a detailed-COCOMO approach is proposed for a manually coded safety-critical embedded SW for an electric vehicle not only to plan the project well in advance but also to assess its commercial viability using quantifiable cost metrics to make the process more objective and repeatable.

Variability Analysis of FMVSS-121 Air Brake Systems: 60-mi/hr Service Brake System Performance Data for Truck Tractors

In support of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA’s) ongoing interest in connected and automated commercial vehicles, this report summarizes analyses conducted to quantify variability in stopping distance tests conducted on commercial truck tractors. The data used were retrieved from tests performed under the controlled conditions specified for FMVSS-121 air brake system compliance testing. The report explores factors affecting the variability of the service brake stopping distance as defined by 49 CFR 571.121, S5.3.1 Stopping Distance—trucks and buses stopping distance. Variables examined in this analysis include brake type, weight, wheelbase, and tractor antilock braking system (ABS). This analysis uses existing test data collected between 2010 and 2019. Several of the examined parameters affected both tractor stopping distance and stopping distance variability.

Comparative Analysis of Methods to Estimate the Tire/Road Friction Coefficient Applied to Traffic Accident Reconstruction

This study presents a comparison of three methods: VC4000PC accelerometer, Sensor Kinetics mobile app, and video analysis by Tracker (free software). The methods have been compared experimentally for emergency braking with locked wheels, as well as using the antilock braking system (ABS). Data from the three methods were recorded simultaneously. Data analysis was made, applying inferential statistics. The results from the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and precision analysis indicate that data collected with the smartphone app ensures good accuracy and does not provide significant differences in comparison with the accelerometer, while the video analysis method showed some statistical differences. The regression analysis yielded an estimation coefficient R2 close to 1, and a residual standard error (RSE) being almost 0, for all experiments, parameters that indicated a good linear regression for both low-cost methods as a function of the accelerometer.

Comparative Analysis between American and European Requirements for Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Focusing on Commercial Vehicles

Analysis of road accidents has shown that an important portion of fatal crashes involving Commercial Vehicles are caused by rollovers. ESC systems in Commercial Vehicles can reduce rollovers, severe understeer or oversteer conditions and minimize occurrences of jackknifing events. Several studies have estimated that this positive effect of ESC on road safety is substantial. In Europe, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is expected to prevent by far the most fatalities and injuries: about 3,000 fatalities (-14%), and about 50,000 injuries (-6%) per year. In Europe, Electronic Stability Control Systems is mandatory for all vehicles (since Nov. 1st, 2011 for new types of vehicle and Nov. 1st, 2014 for all new vehicles), including Commercial Vehicles, Buses, Trucks and Trailers.

A Generalized Component Efficiency and Input-Data Generation Model for Creating Fleet-Representative Vehicle Simulation Cases in VECTO

The Vehicle Energy Consumption calculation Tool (VECTO) is used for the official calculation and reporting of CO2 emissions of HDVs in Europe. It uses certified input data in the form of energy or torque loss maps of driveline components and engine fuel consumption maps. Such data are proprietary and are not disclosed. Any further analysis of the fleet performance and CO2 emissions evolution using VECTO would require generic inputs or reconstructing realistic component input data. The current study attempts to address this issue by developing a process that would create VECTO input files based as much as possible on publicly available data. The core of the process is a series of models that calculate the vehicle component efficiency maps and produce the necessary VECTO input data. The process was applied to generate vehicle input files for rigid trucks and tractor-trailers of HDV Classes 4, 5, 9 and 10.

Complying to both the increasingly stringent pollutant emissions as well as (future) GHG emission legislation - with increased focus on in-use real-world emissions - puts a great challenge to the engine/aftertreatment control development process. Control system complexity, calibration and validation effort has increased dramatically over the past decade. A trend that is likely to continue considering the next steps in emission and GHG emission legislation. Control-oriented engine models are valuable tools for efficient development of engine monitoring and control systems. Furthermore, these (predictive) engine models are more and more used as part of control algorithms to ensure legislation compliant and optimized performance over the system lifetime. For these engine models, it is essential that simulation and prediction of system variables during non-nominal engine operation, such as non-standard ambient conditions, is well captured.

Accuracy and Sensitivity of Yaw Speed Analysis to Available Data

Accident reconstructionists rarely have complete data with which to determine vehicle speed, and so the true value must be bracketed within a range. Previous work has shown the effect of friction uncertainty in determining speed from tire marks left by a vehicle in yaw. The goal of the current study was to assess improvements in the accuracy of vehicle speed estimated from yaw marks using progressively more scene and vehicle information. Data for this analysis came from staged S-turn maneuvers that in some cases led to rollover of sport utility vehicles. Initial speeds were first calculated using the critical curve speed (CCS) formula on the yaw marks from the first portion of the S-maneuver. Then computer simulations were performed with progressively more input data: i) the complete tire marks from the whole S-maneuver, ii) measured vehicle mass, iii) measured suspension stiffness and damping, and iv) measured steering history.
