FEA Beyond Basics Thermal Analysis

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a powerful and well recognized tool used in the analysis of heat transfer problems. However, FEA can only analyze solid bodies and, by necessity thermal analysis with FEA is limited to conductive heat transfer. The other two types of heat transfer: convection and radiation must by approximated by boundary conditions. Modeling all three mechanisms of heat transfer without arbitrary assumption requires a combined use of FEA and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Replacing twin electric fan radiator with Single fan radiator

Downsizing is one of the crucial activities being performed by every automotive engineering organization. The main aim is to reduce – Weight, CO2 emissions and achieve cost benefit. All this is done without any compromise on performance requirement or rather with optimization of system performance. This paper evaluate one such optimization, where-in radiator assembly with two electric fan is targeted for downsizing for small commercial vehicle application. The present two fan radiator is redesigned with thinner core and use of single fan motor assembly. The performance of the heat exchanger is tested for similar conditions back to back on vehicle and optimized to get the balanced benefit in terms of weight, cooling performance and importantly cost. This all is done without any modification in vehicle interface components except electrical connector for fan. The side members and brackets design is also simplified to achieve maximum weight reduction.

A Philosophy of Full Vehicle Simulation for analysing the Road NVH Problems

Road and Engine borne noise are the most prominent sources of noise in any commercial vehicle. With advancement in technology and encouraging prospects in hybrid & electric vehicles, road noise can be set aside as the single most dominant source for vehicular NVH problems. In this paper, a full vehicle model is considered for complete NVH simulation with two acoustic and two structural response points. Random road excitations are applied at various vehicle speeds to determine the response characteristics. An elaborate study is conducted to understand the effects of vehicle speed and road conditions on the vehicle. An attempt is also successfully made to diagnose the effects of road excitations on the system behaviour by considering the suitable transfer functions. The methodology can be readily extended to any type of vehicle and speed as the excitations are independent of these parameters.

The Backhoe thumb attachment was previously a Proprietary Design of the supplier which had two major limitations, limited opportunity of design improvements for resolving customer issues and higher total cost. The paper covers details about overcoming these limitations. In Backhoe loaders, for multiple variants of machines, four different thumbs are used. Small and mid-backhoe machine classes use 4-tine and 2-tine thumb depending upon customer applications. The design team targeted an external customer requirement of a more compact design and internal requirement of accelerating design improvement cycle time.

With adaptation of low pressure mechanical fuel injection system, intake port development becomes an important stage for reduction of emission formation at the source and improvement in fuel economy. In this paper, intake port design and development process is elaborated for two different power ratings of 75 hp and 120 hp of off-highway engine. 2-valve and 4-valve configurations are deployed for the same cylinder bore size.

The paper discusses about the design synthesis and development of dozer bucket mechanism which will be a single unit to perform dozing and loading operation and will be connected to the amphibious infantry combat vehicle for various military activities such as construction of bridges, digging trenches, construction of roads, and clearing the area during landslides. Currently, separate unit for bulldozer for dozing operation and loader for loading operation are required. But the need was to develop a single unit which could perform both of these operations efficiently. Research and development efforts initiated to carry out synthesis of mechanism (Linkages and Boom) which will fulfil the above stated functional requirement and satisfy the geometrical constraints. The synthesis of mechanism is done with help of ‘CATIA’ software packages. The force calculation on various joints at the different position of mechanism has evaluated with the help of ’ADAMS’ software.
