This Aerospace Recommended Practice is applicable to the design of remote indicating magnetic chip detectors installed in the lube systems, hydraulic systems, controls systems, gearboxes, constant speed drives, etc. of Aerospace Power Plants. It is not applicable to the touch-to-test type terminal models.

There are no provisions in this document for anti-extrusion devices. NOTE: The criteria set forth here are similar to but not identical with those in MIL-G-5514 and AS4716. This document is not intended to replace MIL-G-5514 or AS4716 for hydraulic applications.

Multiple Metamodeling Approaches for Improved Design Space Mapping

The complexities involved in an optimization problem at a system level require knowledge base that has information on different approaches and customization of these approaches to a specific class of the optimization problems. One approach that is commonly used is the metamodel based design optimization. The metamodel is 1) a conceptual model for capturing, in abstract terms, essential characteristics of a given optimization problem, and 2) a schema of sufficient formality to enable the problem modeled to be serialized to statements in a concrete optimization language [1]. Optimization is performed based on this metamodel. This metamodel approach has been proven effective and accurate in providing the global optimum. Depending upon the computational hardware availability in an organization, the metamodel based optimization could be much faster way of achieving the optimized solution. However, the accuracy of the optimization is highly dependent on the quality of metamodel generated.

Multi-Objective Aerodynamic Optimization of Vehicle Shape Using Adjoint Approach Based on Steady-State and Transient Flow Solutions

In order to achieve the purpose of saving energy and reducing emission, the improvement of aerodynamic performance plays an increasingly crucial role for car manufacturers. Previous studies have confirmed the validity of gradient-based adjoint algorithm for its high efficiency in shape optimization. In this paper, two important aspects of adjoint approach were explored. One is vehicle aerodynamic optimization with multiple objectives, and the other is using time-averaged flow results as the primal solution, both are issues of high interest in recent applications. First, adjoint shape optimization with steady-state and time-averaged flow simulations were respectively calculated and comparatively discussed based on a production SUV. The shape modifications of the two cases indicated that the impact of primal solution on design change could not be neglected, due to the different intrinsic codes of steady and transient turbulence models.

Generalizing Aspects of System Safety to Broaden Applicability

The Safety Assessment Process, defined by SAE ARP4761 and associated regulatory guidance, is described in the context of conventional, crewed civil aircraft. While this material has been used for decades to evaluate airplanes and rotorcraft, the evolution of technology challenges it. As new entrants venture into aviation, they bring perspectives, which may not clearly align to those conventional concepts. For those skilled in the art of aviation safety assessment, the approach to new technologies might appear straight forward. Such an individual might easily perceive the accommodations for unconventional applications. Once accommodations are made, and failure conditions are established and classified to those new architectures, the rest of the process is somewhat mechanical -they flow out of these conditions. However, the context of their experience betrays the reality of the process description in the ARP and guidance.
