Application Development of Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Electric Vehicles Balancing Economic Objectives and Technical Requirements

This course is offered in China only. More and more stringent emission and fuel consumption regulations are pushing the automotive industry towards electrified powertrain and electrified vehicles. This is particularly evident in China, where there is an increased demand for electric (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Infrastructure is being built across the country for convenient charging. It must now be determined how to meet the technical targets for EV/HEV regulations under economic constraints and how to best develop the major ePowertrain components (battery and motor).

Driven by the need for lower emissions, better fuel economy and higher efficiency, hybrid vehicles are appearing in many different configurations on today's roadways. While the powertrain components such as the drive motor, motor controller and cooling system are somewhat familiar to the automotive industry, the battery systems are a relatively unfamiliar aspect. This seminar will introduce participants to the concepts of hybrid vehicles, their missions and the role of batteries in fulfilling those requirements.

Electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming more visible on today's roadways and the automotive companies are working hard to make these vehicles as transparent as possible to enhance consumer acceptance. The battery system forms a key part of any of these vehicles and is probably the least understood. With practically no moving parts the battery systems show no visible or audible warning of any latent dangers. This seminar will introduce participants to the risks encountered in handling high voltage battery systems and their component parts.

A major challenge to sustainable development is the minimization of environmental impact of energy resource utilization and enhancement of resource utilization efficiency. The limitations on sustainable development of air transport systems due to environmental emissions can be to certain extent overcome through enhanced efficiency by reducing emissions and environmental damage cost. Exergy, and exergo-environmental analysis of air-craft systems are currently the subject of research. Energy, which is defined as the thermodynamic departure of a substance from the surrounding can be considered and accepted as a suitable measure to evaluate environmental impact of energy use. The present article carries out energy, exergy and exergo-environmental analysis of a CT7-7A turboprop engine manufactured by GE Aviation. Film cooling is used as the method of turbine bucket cooling.

Tools for the Conceptual Design of a Stratospheric Hybrid Platform

The Italian Aerospace Research Center is currently developing the design of a HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite). Different HAPS configurations have been proposed in recent years. Airbus Zephyr family and Aurora Odysseus are based on the flying wing configuration. Thales Stratobus is an airship, while Google Loon project is based on balloons. Our proposal concerns a hybrid configuration where the weight is balanced by both aerodynamic and aerostatic forces. In this paper we present the tools we have implemented to develop the conceptual design of our platform. The tools have been implemented in Mathworks Matlab® and Grasshopper® integrated with Rhino 3-D. In the Matlab environment, we have developed an optimization algorithm which can estimate some geometric and energetic global parameters of the platform (weight, surface, volume, required power, width, length and height) using as input the desired speed, altitude and period of the year in which the mission will be performed.

Case Study on the Challenges and Responses of A Large Turnkey Assembly Line for the C919 Wing

Design and production of an assembly system for a major aircraft component is a complex undertaking, demanding a large-scale system view. Electroimpact has completed a turnkey assembly line for producing the wing, flap, and aileron structures for the COMAC C919 aircraft in Xi’an, China. The project scope includes assembly process design, material handling design, equipment design, manufacture, installation, and first article production support. Inputs to the assembly line are individual component parts and small subassemblies. The assembly line output is a completed set of wing box, flaps, and ailerons, for delivery to the FAL in Shanghai. There is a trend toward defining an assembly line procurement contract by its production capacity, versus its list of components, which implies that an equipment supplier must become an owner of production processes.

Improving robotic accuracy through iterative teaching

Industrial robots have been around since the 1960s and their introduction into the manufacturing industry has helped in automating otherwise repetitive and unsafe tasks, while also increasing the performance and productivity for the companies that adopted the technology. As the majority of industrial robotic arms are deployed in repetitive tasks, the pose accuracy is much less of a key driver for the majority of consumers (e.g. the automotive industry) than speed, payload, energy efficiency and unit cost. Consequently, manufacturers of industrial robots often quote repeatability as an indication of performance whilst the pose accuracy remains comparatively poor. Due to their lack in accuracy, robotic arms have seen slower adoption in the aerospace industry where high accuracy is of utmost importance. However if their accuracy could be improved, robots offer significant advantages, being comparatively inexpensive and more flexible than bespoke automation.

Validation Testing of Lithium Battery Performance-Based Packaging for use in Air Transportation (SAE G-27)

The SAE G-27 committee was tasked by ICAO to develop a performance-based packaging standard for lithium batteries transported as cargo on aircraft. The standard details test criteria to qualify packages of lithium batteries & cells for transportation as cargo on-board passenger aircraft. Lithium batteries and cells have been prohibited from shipment as cargo on passenger aircraft since 2016. This paper summarizes the results of the tests conducted by Transport Canada and National Research Council Canada to support the development of this standard with evidence-based recommendations. It includes a description of the test specimens, the test set up, instrumentation used, and test procedures following the standard as drafted to date. The study considered several lithium-ion battery and cell chemistries that were tested under various proposed testing scenarios in the draft standard.

Accounting thermal exchanges in Coanda effect

Modeling Coandã effect has been a fundamental issue in fluid dynamic research in the XX century. It has lost some interest because of the improvement in CFD, even if it could be still important in the area of the preliminary design of aerodynamic devices that benefits of fluid deflection by convex surfaces. An effective model of Coandã effect has not been defined, and fundamental questions are still open. One of the problems which affect many practical cases, but it is still marginally approached by scientific literature, is the influence of convective heat exchange on Coandã adhesion of a fluid stream on a convex surface in the presence of a temperature gradient between the fluid and the convex surface. This paper aims to start an effective research direction on the effects of convective heat exchange on Coandã effect. It approaches the problem with a set of CFD simulations.

An Aircraft’s assembly process plays a vital part in its design, development and production phases and contributes to about half of the Total cost spent in its entire product lifecycle. DFA principles have been one of the proven effective methodologies in Automotive and Process industries. Use of DFA principles have resulted in proactively simplifying and optimizing engineering designs with reduced product costs, and improved inefficiencies in product design and performance. Standardization of Assembly guidelines is vital for “Design and Build” and “Build-To-Print” manufacturing supplier organizations. However, Standardizing design methodologies, through use of proven tools like Advanced Product Quality Planning, (APQP) are still in the initial stages in Aerospace part and process design processes.

Since the early development of Mixed Reality (MR) technologies for the gaming industry, Boeing Research and Technology has been a leader in applying the technology to the production environment. Mixed Reality technologies have matured in size reduction and cost enabling a wide variety of visualization tools into the factory today. They include: tablets, Microsoft’s HoloLens, Google Glasses, Vive, and Oculus to name a few. These digital productivity tools allow the factory worker to perform work through installation, quality inspection, and trouble shooting.
