Local Weakening of Honeycomb Core for Improved Surface Quality and Bonding in Co-cured Sandwich Panels

Sandwich panels made of NOMEX honeycomb core and fiber reinforced face sheets are a major component of aircraft interior parts. A common way to locally increase the strength of such panels, e.g. for load introduction, is the local thickening of the face sheets with additional prepreg layers. Curing of such strengthened panels without further processing of the core leads to higher flatness tolerances due to the added thickness as well as residual stresses. Machining of the core in the strengthened areas is possible, but expensive due to high machine costs and additional cleaning processes. In this paper a new automated process for the reduction of the residual stresses in strengthened areas is presented. The process is based on a local reduction of the compressive strength in the surface area of the honeycomb core, which allows for a plastic deformation in thickened areas at curing pressure.

Efficient Test Bench Operation with Early Damage Detection Systems

The efficient operation of test benches within the framework of research and development projects directly correlates with the "health" of the examinee to be investigated. The use of so-called Early Damage Detection Systems (EDDS) is becoming increasingly popular for reasons of Unit Under Test (UUT) monitoring. In the context of this publication the expectations of an EDDS and its structure are discussed as well as its advantages and disadvantages in test bench operation analyzed and compared with the results of measurements. The used EDDS should primarily prevent the damage, up to the loss of the test object by a total loss, in order to ensure a finding possibility of the damaged part at the examined test object. A deviation of the test object behavior from the undamaged condition must be recognized in an early status and must lead to a shutdown of the test bench operation after reaching a defined limit value.

Residual Aligning Moment Test

This Recommended Practice describes the determination of tire pull force properties for an uninclined tire (SAE J670e) on a laboratory flat surface tire force and moment machine. It is suitable for accurately determining pull forces and residual aligning moments for passenger and light-truck tires. These properties are important determinants of vehicle trim. They describe steady-state, free-rolling pull effects ascribable to tires. The test method described in this document is suitable for comparative evaluation of tires for research and development purposes. The method is also suitable for modeling when followed carefully.

Procedure for Certification that Requirements for Mobile Air Conditioning System Components, Service Equipment, and Service Technician Training Meet SAE J Standards

This SAE Standard provides manufacturers/marketers, testing facilities and providers of technician training with a procedure for certifying compliance with the applicable standard. Manufacturers/marketers or sellers who advertise their products as Certified to an SAE J standard shall follow this procedure. Certification of a product is voluntary; however, this certification process is mandatory for those advertising meeting SAE Standard(s) requirements. Only certifying to this standard allows those claiming compliance to advertise that their product (unit), component, or service technician training meets all requirements of the applicable SAE standard.

Recommended Practice for Performance Rating of Electric Vehicle Battery Modules

This SAE Recommended Practice provides for common test and verification methods to determine Electric Vehicle battery module performance. The document creates the necessary performance standards to determine (a) what the basic performance of EV battery modules is; and (b) whether battery modules meet minimum performance specification established by vehicle manufacturers or other purchasers. Specific values for these minimum performance specifications are not a part of this document.

This specification covers a silicone rubber in the form of sheet, strip, tubing, extrusions and molded shapes. Primarily for parts required to operate or seal from -75 to +205 degrees C (-103 to +401 degrees F), compounded especially for high strength. Silicone elastomer is resistant to deterioration by weathering and by high-aniline-point-petroleum-base oils and remains flexible over the temperature range noted. These products are not normally suitable for use in contact with gasoline or aromatic fuels and low-aniline-point petroleum-base fluids due to excessive swelling.
